Experience in using root and foliar dressings

foliar dressing

The results of numerous studies and the recommendations of specialists on the effect of fertilizers on the yield and quality of the harvest of different vegetable crops differ significantly in terms, doses, forms of fertilization in specific soil and climatic conditions.

But the basic principle is absolutely indisputable - it is necessary to ensure the supply of plants with a whole range of different nutrients, which are applied with a variety of fertilizers.

Gardener's guide

At the same time, the use of fertilizers only before sowing or planting seedlings, even with a high dosage, usually does not give the desired result (and a negative result is also possible).

Have to feed dosed - in small portions. In addition, torrential rains and melt water ruthlessly carry away valuable nutrients from the beds (this is especially true for potassium and nitrogen) - that is, fertilizers have to be applied again and again. In other words, gardeners and truck farmers will not be left without work - willy-nilly, but they will still have to organize feeding the plants. How? The options may be different - depending on personal preferences, the presence or absence of time and energy, etc.

Classic root dressing

As you know, in practice, it is customary to use two types of dressings - root (conventional top dressing, when fertilizer enters the soil and absorbed by the roots) and foliar (when fertilizer is introduced through leaves, stems, and sometimes even through a stem). Root dressing is the main one, since the main dose of fertilizer is always applied through the soil. If you read various books on gardening and horticulture, you can find dozens of schemes for conducting summer root dressing.

They can be taken as a basis, making discounts on the initial filling of your site with fertilizers (yours, since all gardeners have different situations), on the condition of plants and weather conditions. As an example, I will give an indicative scheme, which I myself have been guided by for many years when feeding various crops on my site.

Top dressing of tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplants

foliar dressing

The first three weeks after planting, the plants, except for timely watering, do not need anything. But then you should start regular feeding, since all hybrids of tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are intensive crops. It is better to feed once a week. When using liquid dressings for one tomato or eggplant plant, 1-1.5 liters of the prepared solution are usually required, and for pepper, 0.5 liters of solution is enough.

Approximate feeding scheme:

• 1st top dressing - Kemira fertilizer or any other complex fertilizer, simply scattering it in handfuls between bushes (the amount of fertilizer per 1 m2 is indicated on the package package); then pour over the mullein;

• 2nd feeding - with Magbor fertilizer (preliminarily dilute 1 tbsp. A spoonful of fertilizer in 1 bucket of water);

• 3rd feeding - add superphosphate, ash and water with a mullein;

• 4th top dressing - a solution of "Giant" fertilizer with the addition of potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. Spoon for 1 bucket of water);

• 5th feeding - fertilizers magbor and potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. Spoon of each fertilizer for 1 bucket of water);

• 6th top dressing - a solution of "Giant" fertilizer with the addition of potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. Spoon for 1 bucket of water);

• 7th top dressing - fertilizers magbor and potassium sulfate (1 tablespoon of each fertilizer for 1 bucket of water);

• 8th top dressing - a solution of "Giant" fertilizer with the addition of potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. Spoon for 1 bucket of water);

Starting from the ninth feeding, the plants should be fed only with a potassium sulfate solution. If the soil for the tomatoes was not sufficiently fertile, then perhaps 1-2 more mullein feeding will be required. But it should be borne in mind that from the middle of the growing season, the application of nitrogen fertilizers for tomatoes can lead to negative consequences: the ripening of the crop will slow down, and the fruits will be of inferior quality. A positive effect is provided by spraying plants once a week with the New Ideal preparation, which will serve as additional foliar feeding and stimulate the defenses of plants. In addition, during flowering, foliar dressing with a solution of boric acid (1 g per 1 liter of water) gives a positive effect. This improves fruit set. Usually 2-3 such dressings are sufficient with an interval of 10 days.

Top dressing for cucumbers

Many of the currently popular heterotic cucumber hybrids are so-called intensive type hybrids. This means that they require a fractional application of increased doses of fertilizers and at the same time please us with a huge harvest. Fractional fertilization is provided by a series of continuous fertilization. The first three weeks after planting are usually sufficient for the plants to be fertilized in advance. But only then you should start regular feeding. A delay with just one of them can lead to the fact that the cucumbers on a certain tier simply will not tie. It is better to feed once a week. When using liquid dressings for 1 m? usually requires 5-6 liters of the prepared solution.

Approximate feeding scheme:

• 1st feeding - feed with Kemira fertilizer or any other complex fertilizer, scattering it in handfuls between bushes (the amount of fertilizer per 1 m2 is indicated on the package package); then you should water the soil with a mullein;

• 2nd feeding - add superphosphate and ash in dry form;

• 3rd feeding - water the soil with a mullein;

• 4th top dressing - carry out liquid top dressing with Magbor and Baikal-EM1 fertilizers (these solutions do not mix).

Then, every week until the end of active fruiting, you should alternately feed with ash or a liquid solution of potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. Spoon for 1 bucket of water). And once every two weeks add magbor fertilizer to the solution. If possible, at the same time, it is not bad to carry out 1-2 additional fertilizing with Baikal-EM1 fertilizer and 2-3 additional fertilizing with Giant fertilizer, alternating them evenly. In parallel with this, one should monitor the peculiarities of increasing the vegetative mass of plants and the shape of the fruits. At the slightest growth retardation, blanching of the tops or the formation of ugly fruits in the form of a carrot, you need to remember about nitrogen fertilizers and water the soil under the bushes with a mullein or sprinkle urea.

When ugly pear-shaped fruits are formed, it is necessary to increase the dose of potassium fertilizers. Cucumbers usually do not require additional feeding with phosphorus. Feeding cucumber plants with weak solutions of nitrogen fertilizers, in contrast to the general majority of other vegetable crops, can be carried out until the end of the growing season. The only thing to remember: this should be done only if by the outward appearance of the plants themselves you will record signs of nitrogen starvation (otherwise, nitrates may accumulate in the fruits). A positive effect is provided by spraying plants once a week with the New Ideal preparation, which will serve as additional foliar feeding and stimulate the defenses of plants.

Fertilizing zucchini

Top dressing begins with the beginning of flowering of plants and is carried out after two weeks. At the same time, about 800 g of fertilizer solution is poured under each plant. The fertilizing solution is prepared on the basis of the "Giant" fertilizer, but from the second feeding add 2 tablespoons of potassium sulfate to the bucket of the nutrient mixture. Once, to improve the taste of the fruit, it is worth feeding the plantings with Magbor fertilizer (1 tbsp. A spoonful of fertilizer for 1 bucket of water). And at the time of intensive pouring of fruits, you need to pour two handfuls of ash under each plant. With sufficient initial filling of the soil, in addition, only one mullein feeding will be required at the time of the decrease in the intensity of the formation of new leaves and shoots (this usually happens in the middle of fruiting).

If the growth of the vegetative mass is not active enough, then more mullein feeding may be required. There are other situations when there are more than enough leaves, but practically no fruits - for example, few female flowers appear. In this case, phosphorus-potassium feeding is necessary. A positive effect is provided by spraying plants once a week with the New Ideal preparation, which will serve as additional foliar feeding and stimulate the defenses of plants.

Top dressing pumpkin

foliar dressing

In our Ural summer, the pumpkin behaves quite whimsically. And if in a rare hot summer, its harvest can still be obtained with a minimum amount of dressing, then in a normal summer you can remain without a harvest. Therefore, unlike other (more favorable) climatic zones, without additional fertilizing, only by filling the soil well from the beginning, and here it is impossible to do. With liquid top dressing, up to two liters of fertilizer solution will need to be poured under the plant. Top dressing is started at the beginning of the rapid growth of the lashes. Before that, you need to carefully study the plants themselves. If their whips do not grow actively enough (in a day the whip should grow up to a meter in length), then you need to feed them with a divorced mullein. Provided that the soil is properly prepared, 2-3 nitrogen fertilizing is usually sufficient.

If the edges of the leaves have lightened, turned yellow or even dried out, then fertilizing with a liquid solution of potassium sulfate is necessary (2 tablespoons of fertilizer per 1 bucket of water). For the whole season, three additional dressings with this fertilizer are usually sufficient. In a cold rainy summer, the amount of potash dressings can increase to 5-6. Once, to improve the taste of the fruit, it is worth feeding the zucchini plants with Magbor fertilizer (1 tablespoon of fertilizer for 1 bucket of water). And at the moment of intensive pouring of fruits, it is necessary to pour out two small handfuls of "Giant" fertilizer and two handfuls of ash under each plant.

With a large number of fruits, such an operation can be performed 2-3 times with an interval of ten days. A positive effect is obtained by spraying the plants once a week with the New Ideal preparation, which will serve as additional foliar feeding and stimulate the defenses of the plants.

Top dressing of cabbage: white cabbage, red cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli

foliar dressing
foliar dressing

Top dressing begins three weeks after planting seedlings in the ground. The first feeding is mulching with last year's manure and old sawdust (which is combined with hilling cabbage with ordinary soil), and all the rest are ordinary liquid feeding. Old sawdust can be replaced with fresh ones, but with the addition of nitrogen fertilizers in this case: for every 3 buckets of sawdust, 200 g of urea or 300 g of ammonium nitrate will be required. In general, the layer of mulching material can reach 10-13 cm (much less for Brussels sprouts, about 5-6 cm).

The watering rate for liquid fertilizing is about 1-1.5 liters of nutrient solution per plant.

Approximate feeding scheme:

• 1st top dressing - three weeks after planting - hilling soil, sprinkling with last year's manure and old sawdust (instead of old sawdust, you can take fresh and add nitrogen fertilizers);

• 2nd feeding - six weeks after planting - feeding with mullein solution and Gigantic fertilizer;

• 3 top dressing - seven weeks after planting - top dressing with Baikal-EM1 fertilizer;

• 4th top dressing - eight weeks after planting - top dressing with phosphorus-potassium fertilizer (half a matchbox of superphosphate for each plant and watering with a potassium sulfate solution - 2 tablespoons on top of a bucket of water);

• 5th top dressing - ten weeks after planting - top dressing with a solution of "Giant" fertilizer in combination with ash (pour 2 handfuls of ash under each plant);

• 6th top dressing - eleven weeks after planting - to improve the taste of cabbage, top dressing with Magbor fertilizer (1 tablespoon per bucket of water);

• 7th top dressing - thirteen weeks after planting - top dressing with potassium sulfate (2 tablespoons on top of a bucket of water).
