Last year, the Romanov gardeners - Boris Petrovich and Galina Prokopyevna - made a splash with their harvest at the traditional AgroRus exhibition. First of all, everyone was struck by watermelons and melons grown in the open field near St. Petersburg. This year they have repeated and exceeded their result, proving that success was not accidental. Today is the first review of their publication from the whole cycle, promised to our magazine. As always, the plans for the coming season were big. But it was not so easy to take the bar of the planned heights. In the spring, all events developed in spite of our efforts and hopes.

The spring was long, even and, which was especially pleasing to all gardeners, without recurrent frosts. This circumstance already gave hope to everyone that there would be a good harvest of berries. Yes, and for other crops it was good, it was possible to plant previously heat-loving plants in greenhouses and even in open ground. We think that many took advantage of this gift of nature and managed, at their own peril and risk, to plant seedlings earlier than usual.

We also took advantage of this moment. Not even having time to completely cover the greenhouse, we planted peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and melons on warm beds with a temporary cover for the night with a film. Planting of all crops this year was carried out outside the box, despite our twenty years of experience. We will tell you more about the new landing techniques later, in other publications. But the unusual spring kind of helped us, we fit into the planting schedule, the seedlings of not a single crop were overexposed. Only tomato seedlings stretched out a little - they had to be planted in a spread.

But behind the warm sunny spring, summer began with cloudy days, which alternated with rainy ones. Pumpkin plants and watermelon melons suffered most from lack of sun. But warm sunny days in August helped to correct this deficiency and achieve success in growing these crops as well. We got the largest watermelon ever growing, weighing 20 kilograms in the open field, a large number of melons - both in the open field and in the greenhouse. We also succeeded in a giant pumpkin, it gained 92 kilograms in two months.

In a greenhouse with a total area of 70 m2, tomatoes of various varieties, melons, sweet and bitter peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and even one watermelon bush with two fruits grew under one "roof". And all these crops gave us an excellent harvest this year. There was something to show at the exhibition "AgroRus", our work was highly noted there. We dedicated our current successes to our city Kolpino, which will celebrate its 285th anniversary in early October.

In addition to vegetables, berries and fruits, a large number of ornamental shrubs and flowers grow on our site. The flower beds in our garden bloomed amazingly this summer. Even the climbing rose, which we transplanted to a new place quite late in the spring and which, apparently, took offense at us and threw off all the foliage, then responded to the caring care and grew into a large bush. True, it never bloomed this season, to reproach us. We have remembered this lesson for a long time and we will not do such experiments with roses in the future.

This season we have tried many new summer flowers. Finally, after three summer seasons, we decided on the varieties of petunias, we chose those varieties that will be on our site next summer and later. In early May, new perennial flowers were sown on the growing bed. Unfortunately, not everyone went up. But the result on this bed is still pleasant: by September a large number of strong perennials were growing on it. The foxglove also pleased me: its good self-seeding sprouted in the beds. This means that a vertical will appear from them in our flower beds. This season, a pond was also made, finally, a floor was made for the future gazebo. Last fall, an alpine slide was laid, but we did not have time to deliver stones for it - it remained unfinished this season.

We were very glad to receive a present from Mika as a prize for participation in the Summer Season competition. According to her certificate, we purchased beautiful plants in the company's nursery: Japanese scarlet (a very interesting tree), hawthorn and barberry. All seedlings took root well, as they had a closed root system. At the end of the summer season, they gave good growth. We are grateful to the firm for the high-quality planting material. This season, very high results were obtained in many crops, but there were also mistakes that will be taken into account next year. Now, when the intensity of the suffering is dying down, there is something to think about, to draw conclusions. Summer has passed, summer has been. And our thoughts are already in the future - in anticipation of a new spring.
