For the third year in a row, our magazine, to one degree or another, reflects on its pages aeronautics competitions in Velikiye Luki, the city of the neighboring Pskov region. In 2005, the reason for the publication was the victory of the Russian pilot Sergei Vinogradov, who, in addition to his passion for flying in the sky, is also actively involved in gardening.
And again, from 9 to 16 June, when large snow-white columnar "candles" appear on chestnuts in Velikiye Luki, and bright flowers bloom on numerous flower beds, the XII International Meeting of Balloons will be held there. This year, athletes will compete for three cups: the 1st Cup of the Pskov Region Administration, the 3rd Cup of the city of Velikiye Luki and the 1st Cup of Princess Olga.
The winner of the Administration Cup will be the pilot with the highest number of points among all the balloonists participating in the competition. Only Russian pilots will fight for the City Cup. Russian and foreign women pilots with the highest number of points will be able to compete for the Princess Olga Cup.
We hope that at these competitions, where our freelance correspondent will be present, pilot-gardener Sergey Vinogradov will again successfully perform.
The ballooning competitions themselves are a very colorful show. Soaring into the sky on balloons, which traditionally come in very bright colors, pilots can admire the picturesque corners of the ancient Russian city. Velikiye Luki - the city of fountains, chestnuts and lindens - at this time is buried in flowers and greenery. Numerous "air tourists", starting on hot air balloons, also manage to admire the beauty of the city and its environs from a bird's eye view.
