Rare and short meetings with friends Svetlana Nikolaevna and Yuri Leonidovich Lunevs, who live in the ancient city of Pskov and have a land plot not far from the city, did not allow me to pay due attention to their gardening successes.

Of course, I knew that a few years ago they brought from Sochi from Sochi and planted a vine of the "black" grape variety, but I did not pay much attention to it and showed no interest in growing grapes in our rather harsh climate. Well, they planted and planted, it's good that the grapes are still growing, and not killed by frosts and winds. The winds, I must say, in the place where their summer cottage is located, can be quite strong and unpleasant, since the dacha is located almost on the coast of Lake Pskov, and even in the lowlands, which, in addition to frost and winds, contributes to the flow of cold air there …

True, this vine was planted in a rather large greenhouse, built of wooden slats and covered with glass, which, of course, cannot be removed for the winter. However, it is still unlikely that it "keeps" warm and does not let the cold inside. And the grapes were planted at the entrance to the greenhouse, which created an additional "blowing" with cold when the doors of the shelter were not tightly closed. So, no special "hothouse" conditions were created for the vine.

In my opinion, the business of growing grapes was completely unpromising, but since they love to grow all kinds of plants that do not grow in our climate, I thought: "Let them try." Friends have tried. And what I saw in their garden this summer, and in mid-July, plunged me into amazement. One third of the greenhouse, almost four square meters of area, was occupied by a vine, skillfully directed along the trellis.

But these were, as they say, flowers. All of it was hung with rather large clusters of dark purple grapes, which, judging by its appearance, were clearly ripe and filled with juices. He possessed that unique beauty that both pleases us and delights us. In my photographs, you can see this miracle well enough. The owners' daughter demonstrates the ripening clusters.

Returning to St. Petersburg, I immediately found articles on growing grapes in our climatic conditions in the Flora Price magazines and began to study them diligently. Things have come to the point that I have already bought a vine myself, although not yet "cultured", but Amur grapes, planted it in the garden and now I am looking forward to the results.

For myself, I made the following conclusion. You can grow almost any wonder on earth, if you have a great desire, patience and skill. Of course, the selection of material, and climatic conditions, and the choice of a planting site are important, and you cannot do without luck, but the main thing is still the desire and work of gardeners. And then the result is obtained, which pleases the gardeners themselves, delights their neighbors and friends. And let them be jealous and eager to repeat the experiment themselves!
