Fishing tales
Usually our company of amateur fishermen consisted of three people: me, my relative Alexander Rykov and his colleague Oleg. However, when on our next fishing trip we met on the platform of the railway station, there were … four of us! Oleg brought a girl with him.
- My sister Ksenia, lives in another city, - he introduced her to us and, looking slyly at us, added: - He has a good spinning rod.
Rykov and I exchanged glances. Immediately I remembered an old fishing proverb: "Take a woman for fishing, you will never see a fish." And indeed, looking at this petite, slender girl, the thought involuntarily crept in: can she swing a spinning rod all day long?
In the presence of a person unknown to Rykov and me, the conversation did not go well: we only occasionally exchanged insignificant phrases. This went on all the way until we got to "our" place on Ladoga, not far from the Karelian town of Lakhdenpohja.
Several fishermen followed our company with undisguised interest, and, of course, first of all, Ksenia. When we passed by, one of them, a bearded man in a wind jacket, gave us after us: "To be with a woman, you can't catch a fish!" But our companion paid no attention to either this tirade or the frankly skeptical views of the fishermen.
Even when our four scattered along the shore, we, like other fishermen, did not let Xenia out of sight: everyone was curious: how would she handle the spinning rod? The girl, meanwhile, walked along the shore, looked around and stopped about twenty meters from the bearded fisherman.
Having chosen a place, she took out a spinning rod from a case, took out a box with spinners from a backpack, chose a spinner, hooked it on the line and made a cast. Not only did Ksenia make the cast skillfully, professionally, but it also turned out to be very distant - about sixty meters. Not every male spinning player is capable of throwing a spoon so far.
On the third cast, she pulled out a half-kilogram perch. After a while, another one. There were no more bites. Ksenia reeled the line onto a reel and, having specified at what time we were leaving, went to the left along the bank, along the water's edge.
Our trio stayed where they were. I have to admit, it didn’t bite badly. By the appointed time of our departure, Oleg caught three pikes, each no more than one and a half kilograms, and a dozen decent perches. Rykov had one less pike, but more perches. I fished out three pikes and only seven perches. But one humpback pulled 560 grams.
The bearded man, who surprised him nearby, in addition to the perches, pulled a pike weighing a little more than two and a half kilograms onto the popper, and it was clear how joy literally bursting with him: after all, no one had such a large animal!
It is clear that we were looking forward to Ksenia. She showed up twenty minutes before departure.
- Well, how? We asked without saying a word.
Not only a bearded man approached us, but other fishermen also came up. Ksenia took off her weighty backpack and opened it. And we saw the same as ours, perches, only much more. In addition to them, in the backpack there were two asp kilograms under one and a half each.
- But I have a pike, be healthy! - the bearded man boasted and, holding the fish in his hand, added with pride: - Two six hundred!
- I also have a pike, I have it downstairs.
With these words, I took out a fish from my backpack. We were stupefied … We immediately weighed the pike - three kilograms four hundred grams. That's the "pike"!
- What did you catch? The guy in the blue jacket asked.
Ksenia showed two spinners. One large one-color red copper, the second smaller two-tone brass.
- So believe the sayings and beliefs that a woman on fishing brings only bad luck … - the guy in the blue jacket shook his head.
Ksenia and I didn’t have a chance to go fishing anymore, as she soon left. And we often remember the fisherwoman: a fragile, graceful girl who easily furnished experienced, seasoned fishermen.
