Small fish walk in large schools, and the spoon, which exactly resembles a swimming fish, will not stand out among them, therefore, as a rule, there will be no bite on it. The spoon, by its movement or appearance, which differs from other objects of the fish's attention, makes it want to make a test bite."

It is widely believed that the more a spoon resembles a fish, the more chances of success in catching predators. Probably, in some cases this is true. But not always!

Take a look at the spinners in photo 1, do they look like some fish in our reservoirs in coloring?

Nevertheless, as the manufacturers of such spinners assure, the reviews about them are extremely positive. What's the matter here? In one of the fishing magazines, I came across an interesting, rather plausible, but in my opinion, an explanation of this phenomenon.

"… Usually, when a fish is badly wounded, its dying flutters create water vibrations and, irritating the predatory fish, lure it." With a high degree of probability, it can be assumed that if, when driving the spoon, it creates the necessary vibrations in the water (game), then it becomes catchy, regardless of its appearance and color.

But let's get back directly to the spoons. By the nature of the game, spinners are divided into two main groups: rotating (see Fig. 1) and oscillating (see Fig. 2). In addition to these two main groups, there are also, as it were, intermediate ones: semi-rotating and semi-oscillating. With slow retrieval, such spinners oscillate, with fast - they rotate or make mixed movements.

Some professional fishermen, on this basis, equip the same spoon, for example, the most widespread "Spoon", so that it can be oscillating or rotating (see Fig. 3).

According to the outline (or device), lures are divided into symmetrical and non-symmetrical (see Fig. 4). They are small - 20-35 millimeters long, medium - 50-70 millimeters and large - 90-110 millimeters. By thickness, thin ones are distinguished - 0.5-1 millimeters thick, medium - 1.2-1.8 millimeters and thick 2-3 millimeters. A separate group is made up of mini-spoons and devons. Mini-spoons are very small spoons, usually imitating insects. Devon is usually a hollow metal cigar-shaped body with two lateral lobes. (This spoon will be discussed in a separate issue of the magazine).

In addition to these, there are also especially heavy spoons and the so-called "fantasy" spoons. Extra heavy spoons - weighing 40-60 grams and over 100 millimeters long. These spoons, designed for catching large trophies, require complex adjustment and are difficult to cast in the right place. It makes no sense to talk in detail about such spinners, since in the conditions of the North-West they are practically not used.

"Fantasy" - these are brightly colored baubles with an unusual pattern (see photo 2). The catchability of such lures is estimated by anglers far from unambiguously … For example, a popular fishing magazine states: “You should not resort to using so-called“fantasy”spoons”.

In the book about fishing tackle there is a completely different opinion: "There are brightly colored, so-called" fantasy "spoons that also attract fish." I happened to fish with such spinners, but I can't say anything concrete. So the choice is up to every angler.

However, whatever the shape and color of the spoon, in order to be catchy, it must have several necessary qualities: attract a predator, not sail too much when casting, play with the slightest pull, be easily controlled.

A specific selection of spoons in shape, color, size and equipment should be done based on the season, the depth of the reservoir, the strength of the current, the presence of vegetation, the degree of transparency and illumination of the water.
