Reproduction of irises

Irises
Irises

Most often, irises are propagated by dividing the rhizomes, cutting small pieces with 2-3 buds, sprinkling the slices with charcoal. In this case, the leaves of irises are cut to a height of 10-15 cm with a cone. Cuttings are planted shallow, spreading the roots on two sides perpendicular to growth.

Top dressing

For regular flowering, irises need fertilizing with mineral fertilizers:

- At the beginning of May, when the buds start to grow, with complex mineral fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (azofoska, nitrophoska).

- In early June - top dressing necessary for the development of the peduncle: mineral fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus (potassium sulfate, simple or double superphosphate).

- 2-3 weeks after flowering, during the formation of flower buds of the next year - phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (single or double superphosphate, potassium sulfate).

Mineral fertilizers can be replaced with wood ash at the rate of one matchbox per plant.

The flowering time of irises can be increased by timely removal of faded flowers and leaves that have lost their decorative value.

Care

During a drought period, irises are watered, the aisles are loosened, preventing the germination of weeds. For the winter, it is advisable to cover the flower beds with spruce branches or sprinkle with peat. At the end of April, the shelter must be removed, the plants must be broken.

Of the diseases, most often bearded irises are affected by bacteriosis, with this disease the rhizomes of plants become soft, turn brown and rot. Rhizomes affected by the disease are dug up, cut to healthy tissue, sprinkled with coal or wood ash, dried and planted again.

Of the drugs against bacteriosis, you can use trichopolum (metronidazole) - an antibiotic that acts against protozoa and gram-negative bacteria (2 tablets per liter). The slice and rhizome are processed with the solution.

In the second half of summer, a disease such as rust can appear on irises. At the first signs of infection, it is necessary to treat the plants with foundation or copper-containing preparations.

At the beginning of the growing season, leaf-eating beetles may appear on the plants, resembling cruciferous flea beetles in appearance, against which drugs are effective: "Intavir", "Fas", "Karate", "Decis".
