As noted above, all parts of this plant contain an essential oil, in which scientists have found cineole, terpineol, acetic, isovaleric, benzoic acids. Resins, angelic and malic acids, sugars, starch, sesquiterpenes, furocoumarins, tannins are found in the roots; the leaves contain mineral salts, carotene, vitamins C and P.
Thanks to this composition, lovage has long been used in folk medicine, although official medicine in our country so far uses it only in some herbal preparations.
And traditional healers used and are using preparations of lovage as a diuretic, choleretic, carminative expectorant and sedative. Lovage preparations are also used in homeopathy. Doctors in some countries have found it possible to use the medicinal properties of lovage. For example, in France, an infusion of lovage herb, prepared according to a recipe: pour 5 g of grass with half a liter of boiling water and leave for half an hour - it is recommended to patients to improve digestion and restore appetite.

For culinary and medicinal purposes, the leaves can be stored throughout the season, but the youngest leaves are most tasty and useful. Therefore, the leaves and stems are usually cut 3-4 times per season. They can be dried and frozen.
There is information that the roots of lovage are poisonous before and during flowering. Therefore, for medicinal purposes, they are dug up in the fall and dried. Take roots from two- and three-year-old plants. In pharmacies, you can find dry roots of lovage on sale in packages of 25 grams.
Our healers use preparations from the roots of lovage for various diseases, such as pyelonephritis, edema, heart and respiratory diseases, migraine and gout, rheumatism, urinary retention and others.
For example, for gout and rheumatism, it is recommended to take a decoction of lovage roots:
To obtain it, pour 5 g of dry roots of lovage with a glass of boiling water (200 ml) and put on low heat. After boiling for 10 minutes, boil, and then, wrapped, insist for 2-3 hours. Strain. Bring the volume of liquid to the original (200 ml) with boiled water. Take a decoction of 1 tablespoon 3-4 times a day half an hour before meals.

To obtain it, 10 g of dried lovage root is poured with one liter of water and brought to a boil. Cook for about ten minutes over low heat, then insist for half an hour. The resulting broth should be drunk in four doses during the day.
Also, ready-made infusions and decoctions of herbs or lovage roots are used for baths, washing, compresses in the treatment of pustular skin diseases, non-healing ulcers and wounds. An infusion of lovage roots is also recommended for taking baths with skin lesions (neurodermatitis, eczema, psoriasis).
For these diseases, it is also recommended to take the infusion and inside. This infusion is prepared differently - from one teaspoon of crushed dry roots, which are poured into a glass of boiling water. Insist half an hour. Take this infusion three times a day, a tablespoon.
Lovage to enhance sexual function
For this purpose, traditional healers recommend adding succulent leaves of the plant to salads. Also, to enhance erection, they advise preparing and taking a wine extract of lovage root. To do this, pour a bottle of red wine into a dark glass dish and add 30 g of dry crushed lovage roots there. Insist in a dark place for two weeks. It is recommended to take 50 ml twice a day.
Anthelmintic infusion of lovage
To obtain it, you need to take 30 g of lovage stems and leaves and pour them 300 ml of boiling water. Insist for three hours. Drink the resulting infusion during the day before each meal.
Infusion for insomnia
To obtain it, 10 g of lovage rhizomes are poured into 250 ml of cool boiled water. Insist 4 hours, then filter. It is recommended to take half a glass twice a day.
Contraindications
Since the use of lovage for culinary or medicinal purposes causes blood flow to the reproductive organs, it is not recommended to use fresh leaves and preparations from this plant during pregnancy, heavy menstruation, hemorrhoids.
It is also contraindicated in some kidney diseases in the acute stage, for example, with pyelonephritis or renal failure. In any case, a consultation with a doctor will not hurt.
