Every spring I look forward to the blooming of peonies, watching the tight balls of buds grow in size, as the first flowers open, petal by petal. And now they are blooming, magnificently, you can't take your eyes off. But one morning, going out into the garden, I did not see the blooming peonies.

After a heavy night rain, huge flowers lay on the ground. I cried with annoyance and resentment at this damp weather, at this rain, which made the flowers so heavy that the stems broke even on the tied bushes.

After all, rains are common in our country, and disappointment can be repeated. I was not ready to completely abandon peonies and decided to look for varieties with lighter flowers that can withstand the vicissitudes of the weather.

The same summer, the search gave its positive results: the whole spectrum of the variety of forms of flowers of non-double peonies opened before me. I flipped through the pages of books, wondering why all this beauty is not yet in my garden. The solution was before my eyes - graceful, light and large flowers of simple shape, or semi-double, like the skirts of dancers, or anemone, or with the so-called Japanese flower shape.

My choice fell on the Japanese form, which seemed the most attractive to start with. Its name comes from the first peonies exported by Europeans from Japan. Flowers of this type consist of one or two rows of large corolla petals, and in the center there is a "pompom" of narrower petals - modified stamens - staminodes. The color of the main petals of the peonies of this group covers all shades from white to maroon. The middle of the flower can be bright yellow, or the same color as or contrasting with the corolla petals.

The lightness of the flowers on the bush, the variety and sophistication of the form, everything spoke in favor of choosing peonies with a Japanese flower shape.

Peony variety Jan van Leeuwen

The first "Japanese" guest that appeared in my garden was the variety Jan van Leeuven (Van Leeuven, 1928, Holland), p.lactiflora - a pure white cup-shaped flower, in the middle of which there is a neat ball of golden staminodes.

Each stem has two or three side buds. Do not delete them. They prolong flowering and make the bush more lush. Flowers on strong stems look up and endure bad weather. The bush is of medium height, compact, does not fall apart, it is not necessary to tie it up.

Peony variety Charles Burgess

The second such peony was the very beautiful variety Charles Burgess (Charles Burgess - Krekler, 1963, USA), p.lactiflora - a deep wine-red color.

In the center of the flower are narrow, wavy, dark red staminodes with yellow curved tips. The stems are slender but strong. The bush does not fall apart. Only adult plants with a large number of stems need support. Variety of medium height and medium flowering time.

Peony variety Neon

The third "Japanese" was the Neon variety (Neon - Nicholls, 1941, USA), p.lactiflora, a seedling from Ama-No-Sode, such an intense bright pink that the eye involuntarily sets it apart from other flowers. It does not fade in the sun and does not fade in the rain.

In the center there is a tight ball of pink staminodes with a yellow edging, which continues to grow during flowering, and from its middle narrow pink petals sprout in a tuft. But this happens when the plant is gaining full strength, around the fourth or fifth year. The bush is high, does not fall apart. This variety is almost not susceptible to diseases, it stands healthy and green until the very frost. Flowering period is average.

After the first three varieties, which showed themselves in all their glory, it was already impossible to stop. And Japanese peonies literally burst into my garden in a large and friendly crowd.

Peony variety Rashoomon

Rashumon - Rashoomon (Japan, before 1928), p.lactiflora - intense crimson-red color. The flower is large. Staminodes are narrow, wavy, with curled tips and yellow edges. The contrast of the dark red main petals and the bright yellow edging of staminodes looks impressive. Stems are straight, strong. A bush of medium height. Flowering period is average.

Isani Gidui - Isani Gidui (Japan), p.lactiflora, first appeared under this name in the list of peonies of the American Peony Society in 1928. The correct name is Isami Jishi, translated from Japanese as Smiling Lion - smiling lion.

Flowers are large, white, with a slight pearl-pinkish tinge when dissolved, graceful in shape. Petals are wide, slightly wavy, in two rows. In the center there are thin bright yellow staminodes. The flowers seem to float above the bush on thin but strong stems. The bush is slightly above average. The flowering period is medium late. Weather-resistant variety.

Peony variety Waikiki

Waikiki - Waikiki (Lins, 1936, USA), p. Lactiflora - rich pink-crimson color, staminodes are red with a cream edge. The flowers are not large, but very graceful and light. The stems are slender but strong. The bush does not fall apart, medium height. Flowering period is average.

Cora Stubbs - Cora Stubbs (Krekler, USA), p.lactiflora. The outer petals are pink-lilac, lighter at the edges, the center is densely filled with cream and pink petals. Many lateral buds. The stems are strong, straight. The bush is of medium height, does not fall apart, does not need support. Flowering period is average.

Kukeni Jishi - Kukeni Jishi (Japan, before 1928), p.lactiflora - pale pink with a pearlescent sheen, opening, gradually turns white. Large flower with wavy petals, graceful shape. In the center is a dense ball of bright yellow staminodes with curving tips. The leaves are corrugated. The height of the bush is average. Flowering period is average.

Peony variety Gold Standart

Gold Standard - Gold Standard (Rosenfield, 1934, USA), p.lactiflora - white, very attractive variety. The outer petals are large in two rows. The center is completely filled with golden yellow staminodes. The stems are strong. Many lateral buds. The bush is tall and lush, grows quickly, and will need support with age due to the large number of stems. Flowering period is average.

Nellie Saylor - Nellie Saylor (Krekler, 1967, USA), p.lactiflora - wine red. In the center is a dense ball of cream-colored petals with red strokes, between which red petals sprout. The stems are strong. Above average shrub. Flowering period is average.

Walter Mains - Walter Mains (Mains, 1956, USA), h.hybrid (p.lactiflora x p.officinalis) - a real burgundy color with a brown tint. The flower is cupped, staminodes are narrow with a yellow border. Flowers rise above the bush. The stems are strong. A bush of medium height. Early flowering period. In 1974 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the American Peony Society.

Peony variety Hit Parade

Hit Parade - Hit Parade (Nicholls, 1965, USA), p.lactiflora. The outer petals are pink with a lilac tint. Staminodes are narrow, coral-yellow, with sharp tips. Flowers are medium-sized, very light, soar above the bush. Abundant flowering. The stems are strong. Above average shrub. Flowering period is average.

Mikado - Mikado (1893, Japan), p.lactiflora - intense crimson. Staminodes are yellow, flat, wavy with curved tips, pink at the base. Stems are straight. The height of the bush is slightly above average. Flowering period is average.

Spiffy peony variety

Spiffy - Spiffy (Klehm, 1999, USA), p.lactiflora - raspberry red with a lilac shade.

Wide outer petals surround a large center of creamy pink, as if openwork petals, mixed with narrow wavy petals of the main crimson color. A very effective combination. The stems are strong. Above average shrub. Flowering period is average.

Japanese peonies are versatile, tolerate both full sun and light gliding partial shade from trees. They are ideal not only for the front part of the flower garden, but also look great against the background of shrubs, harmoniously fitting into the natural style. An array of several bushes of the same variety looks impressive - a lot of soaring flowers over dense green leaves.
