What Melanin Hides

The special pigment melanin is responsible for the formation of freckles and age spots. Its main mission is to protect us from the excess of the sun's rays. It begins to be produced most actively when we are often in the sun, then a tan appears - this melanin accumulates in the skin, giving it a dark tint. The darker the skin, the more pigment it contains.

For many people, melanin is unevenly distributed in the skin. If its clusters are small, these are freckles. If a large pigmented area appears on the skin, this is a pigmented spot.

But if it is the sun that contributes to the manifestation of freckles on the skin, then the formation of age spots can tell the doctor about the presence of certain diseases. For example, if spots are located on the side of the cheeks with a transition to the neck, this may indicate that you have liver problems; accumulations of pigment around the mouth, on the chin, at the nasolabial folds indicate problems in the gastrointestinal tract. Sometimes spots can form after previous skin diseases, often they are associated with pregnancy.

When Aunt Asya won't help

Every woman faces the problem of age spots at one stage or another in her life. Scientists have found that those whose skin is covered with freckles from time to time are especially prone to their formation. And if you belong to this category, you need to take additional measures to prevent the appearance of age spots.

It is very important to protect the skin as melanin is primarily produced by the sun. Sunscreens on open areas should be used from February to late fall. They are especially necessary in the spring, when the sun is most active, on these days use creams with a protection factor of at least 8, it must be applied 15-20 minutes before going outside, since it is after this period of time that the cream begins to work. Renew the layer of cream before each new sun exposure or every 2-3 hours.

If you are going to a sunny resort, visit the solarium 4-5 times before, so that your skin gets used to the sun. Otherwise, having received the first "shock" dose of ultraviolet radiation on the seashore, you have every chance of becoming like that very leopard.

Monitor your health, consume a sufficient amount of vitamins, especially vitamin C, it is its deficiency that contributes to the appearance of age spots.

What do beauticians offer?

It is difficult to deal with age spots that have already arisen, but it is possible. Modern cosmetology offers a number of solutions for this case: laser resurfacing (the upper layer of the skin is exfoliated using a laser beam), chemical peeling (exfoliation of the upper layers of the epithelium using weak acid solutions), exposure to liquid nitrogen. The young, pink skin that is exposed after these procedures is especially susceptible to sunlight and the production of melanin in it occurs much faster. Therefore, treatment may be ineffective if you do not follow certain rules during therapy and for some time after it: walk only on the shady side of the street, if necessary, use an umbrella or wide-brimmed hat, apply a thin layer of sunscreen on your skin before going outside. cream with a high protection factor,use dark powder (repels light rays) - the cosmetologist will tell you more about this.

The listed cosmetic procedures do not guarantee complete elimination of excess pigment. Moreover, once successfully removed stains may reappear. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully care for the skin prone to their formation, to apply bleaching and sunscreens in a timely manner.

Grandmother's chest

Some cosmetologists believe that radical whitening procedures increase dry skin and may cause premature aging. Therefore, a safer way to get rid of age spots is to use gentle bleaching masks of natural origin. And their recipes were known to our grandmothers:

  • Rub 3 teaspoons of cottage cheese and a teaspoon of honey until smooth and apply on face for 15-20 minutes. Wash off with a swab dipped in cold milk;
  • grind a couple of tablespoons of oatmeal in a coffee grinder into flour, mix with beaten egg white, keep the mask on your face for 15-20 minutes, rinse first with warm water, then cold or wipe your skin with an ice cube;
  • moisten a napkin or gauze with sauerkraut juice, apply to areas covered with age spots for 10 minutes, wash with cool water. This is a kind of home chemical peel, but less traumatic for the skin;
  • Stir 20 g of baker's yeast (live, not dry) with a teaspoon of lemon juice or grapefruit juice, apply for 15-20 minutes, rinse with warm green tea, wipe the skin with an ice cube;
  • buy borax at the pharmacy. Mix 1 part borax with 6 parts pure boiled water, keep the mask on the skin until it dries.

Whitening masks can be applied all over the face if you want to lighten freckles, or only on age spots. Do the procedures in the evening, before going to bed, every other day. To achieve a visible effect, at least 15-20 procedures are required. Then let the skin rest for 10 days and, if necessary, repeat the course.

Be beautiful!
