Video: Tomato Tree

Tomato tree or tsifomandra - a distant relative of tomato, potato, physalis, pepper
They all belong to the nightshade family.
Tsifomandra is widespread only in culture, it does not occur in the wild. Usually it is grown indoors, but on the Black Sea coast there is a place where the cyfomandra grows in the open field, showing amazing cold resistance, withstands small frosts.
The cyfomandra tree is up to 3-4 m high, branches. The leaves are large (20x12 cm), simple, whole-cut, oblong-ovoid. The inflorescence is a curl. The flowers are white or light purple, with a more intense color along the veins of the petal.
Interestingly, the plant has a specific unpleasant odor that repels rodents. The fruit is similar to the fruit of an egg-shaped or plum-shaped tomato, with a very dense skin, weighing up to 100 g. When ripe, the fruit is usually dark orange with a reddish-purple tint, but there is also another color - reddish-orange or even yellow. The pulp is light orange, denser than that of a tomato.

Like physalis, cyfomandra fruits are rich in pectin substances, they are just as well transported and stored for a long time. Tsifomandra bears fruit for at least 7 months. The seeds of this plant are brown-purple or yellow, similar to tomato seeds, only without pubescence and are small.
The optimum temperature for seed germination is 25 ° C. Shoots appear in 15-20 days. If the temperature in the room is lower, then the seeds need to be germinated and sown in loose, fertilized soil. At first, seedlings develop slowly, their intensive growth begins in 1.5-2 months, and by the end of the first year of life the plant reaches 1 meter, but it does not branch. Tsifomandra from seeds begins to bear fruit only in the third year. It is not capricious, but due to the superficial root system it does not tolerate waterlogging, the soil must be drained and loose. In winter, the room requires additional lighting.
Those who wish to grow cyfomandra, as well as other rare plants from the Solanaceae family - pepino, naranjilla, golden eggs, yellow nightshade, solyanum, sunberry, sarahu, physalis - Pineapple, Plum jam, Kinglet, Confectioner, Strawberry - and many other garden plants, I can send seeds. I will answer everyone on the condition of sending a large envelope with a letterbox and a stamped 10 rubles.
