How to grow a delicious and healthy salad in the garden

My love for cykorny salad was born quite by accident: at a sale in one of the grocery supermarkets, I bought two bags of a ready-to-eat mixture of Belaya Dacha salads.

Our family loves its greens very much, but it was early spring … When the salad prepared for dinner was eaten with delight and pleasure, the question arose: "What was this burgundy salad with bitterness?"

Having read the inscription on the package, I saw a mysterious "radicchio" among the familiar names. A search on the Internet gave me the following information: head salad, Asteraceae, or Asteraceae. Searching for mysterious lettuce seeds in shops gave me two treasured packets of Endive and Radicchio Mix. And since at that time I was planting peppers in a greenhouse, then Radicchio and Endive were also planted in the free space along with my favorite head salads “Great Lakes” and “Azart”.

Chicory salads are grown by sowing seeds in the ground and seedlings. To obtain early seedlings, seeds are sown in a greenhouse in February-March. Sowing in open ground is carried out from April to July. During spring sowing, if the average daily temperatures are below + 5 ° C for a long time, there is a danger of early shooting. When sowing cykoric lettuce in a greenhouse, very high temperatures should be avoided - they lead to an increase in bitter taste, which can be unpleasant.

Endive develops faster than lettuce and is comfortable with low light. In this regard, its summer planting is recommended to be placed in light shade. I sowed cyclic salads in the same soil as ordinary ones. The crops were covered with caps made of cut plastic bottles. According to agricultural technology, almost all types of soil are suitable for them.

It is important that the humus layer is deep, contains a lot of humus, the soil must be sufficiently moist. Soil that is too light and too heavy can be improved by adding compost and peat chips. Unsuitable - acidic, heavy clay soils with a high level of groundwater, fresh manure.

Seedlings usually appear on the 5-7th day. Like all salads, cyclic salads tolerate frosts down to -2 … -3 ° С. The plant is light-loving, demanding on the moisture content in the soil, especially during the formation of heads of cabbage. Endive does not react well to excess nitrogen in the soil, so I used only dry HB-101 granules as fertilizer.

After the emergence of seedlings, the plants are thinned out, leaving between them first 7-8 cm, and the second time up to 15-16 cm, when a large rosette develops before the leaves close. Chicory salad is a biennial plant, but in the middle lane it is grown most often as an annual. His diseases and pests are the same as those of ordinary lettuce.

The crop is harvested 7-13 weeks after sowing, depending on the variety. Mature plants respond well to cutting. For winter consumption, plants can be buried in wet sand or light turf soil in a flower pot.

Endive forms a rosette of leaves that looks like a salad. It tastes bitter due to the content of intibin in the leaves, a substance very useful for the human circulatory and digestive system.

The leaves contain ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and other vitamins. They are also rich in salts of potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus. They contain protein, valuable sugar for the body, an easily digestible carbohydrate inulin.

Endive leaves do not store well when cut, so they are eaten fresh in vegetable salads. You can use it with cheese for filling pies. It turns out very tasty!

This head lettuce never grew up to a large size, as in the picture of the Radicchio Mix bag, on our site, but one head of cabbage still had a diameter of 7 cm. We will continue to improve our agricultural technology in order to grow good harvests of our favorite and healthy salad.
