Fishing tales

The main fish I hunt with a spinning rod is pike. Fighting this predator with a fighting spirit is a real pleasure for the angler. In anticipation of the opening of the fishing season for this fish, I prepare spinners. Made several new ones, polished some, replaced double hooks and tees with others. My friend Vadim, also a passionate fisherman, but only engaged in bream, caught me doing this.

- Give up this occupation, - he advised, looking at the spoons, - let's go, I'll show you the fishermen who catch pikes. “But now is the spawning time for pikes, and it's forbidden to catch them,” I objected. - The law is not written to these fishermen, I think that they not only know nothing about it, but do not even suspect about its existence.

I looked at him in surprise. Realizing my bewilderment, Vadim explained:

- In the channels of the river Kremenka, well known to you, near Birch Hill, wolves hunt pikes, - and, looking at me slyly, he asked: - So you want to see their fishing? - I might not have asked …

We settled in a hut among the woodlands, from where several rather wide channels could be clearly seen, which in turn were divided into smaller ones. In the nearest of them, according to Vadim, most often gray robbers hunt for pikes.

Despite the fact that the sun warmed quite thoroughly, it was quite cool in the hut, and therefore sitting in it did not tire at all. It was only from a long immobility that my legs became very numb, but I had to endure: after all, patience and endurance are the main qualities of a naturalist.

Minutes and hours passed, but nothing happened in the channels: peace and grace. Overwhelmed by anticipation, I already started nodding, and suddenly Vadim pushed me hard in the side. When I woke up, he pointed to the distant channel … I turned my head there and saw two wolves. They stood by one of the wide channels and carefully watched the grass walking in the water. There, in all likelihood, fish spawned.

Surprisingly, the wolves quickly decided on the fishing tactics. It is possible that they are not here for the first time. One of them swam to the opposite bank of the channel, the other stayed there. Then, as if on command, they rushed into the water and noisily moved through the shallow water, gradually pushing the fish back into the depths of the channel.

From there they drove them into a side, very shallow channel. Probably, the fish sensed the danger, as it was clear from their splashes that they were trying to get out of the trap. But the wolves stood next to each other, cutting off their escape route. At a critical moment, when the fish had nowhere to go, they rushed towards the predators. It is possible that some of the fugitives managed to break through, but one of the wolves with a sharp throw managed to snatch a rather large pike out of the water.

And both fishermen immediately got ashore. I thought that they would "like brothers" share the catch, but that was not the case! The second wolf tried to take the prey from his more successful brother. And they began to pull the pike in different directions. But the hunting wolf turned out to be stronger and, not letting go of the thoroughly battered fish, hid behind the nearest hillock.

The wolf left with nothing hesitantly stomped on the spot and was about to leave, when another wolf appeared at the channel. But clearly not the one who just ran away with the fish. Because the newcomer appeared from a completely different side, and was much smaller. They merged and the fishing continued …

The very process of pike fishing was exactly repeated, as before, with the only difference that the successful fisherman, having got out to the shore, did not eat, and after biting it with his teeth, he left it by the driftwood and returned to the water. And only when, after several unsuccessful attempts, by joint efforts, they nevertheless caught another pike, that is, they managed to fish "for their brother", the fishing ended.

It turns out that not only among people, but also among wolves, the saying is true: "Friendship is friendship, and tobacco is apart." True, it seems to work, again, like with people - not always.
