Ogurdynia Alexandria

Our family grows a huge number of plants belonging to the Pumpkin family on their site. Here, of course, and familiar to everyone, cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini, watermelons and melons. There are also many curiosities. These are angurias, and watermelon-melon, and benincasa, and loofah, and rough melotria, and cucumber-lemon, and much more.

But we still give preference to melon, cucumber and cucumbers. We have already assembled a large collection, which includes 12 varieties of cucumber, the fruits of which are unusual in shape, size and taste.

The fruits of the cucumber can be eaten fresh, made jams and preserves from it. Some manage to make a melon-flavored liqueur out of it. But we, as gardeners-practitioners, are more interested in the technology of growing this exotic.

To begin with, biologically gourd belongs to pumpkin crops. We can say that it is a melon of a special shape and color. After all, few people have tried unripe melon and tried to compare its taste with the taste of a cucumber. However, any green melon can be compared to it. Therefore, I am inclined to think that cucumber is a special form of a simple melon, because there are no other varieties of melons now, different in shape, taste, etc.

In total, there are 15 varieties of cucumber. They differ in size, taste, aroma and color. For the first time, breeder Pavel Yakovlevich Saraev, who had been engaged in the selection of frost-resistant cucumbers and tomatoes for many years, told the gardeners about gherdin.

Ogurdynya variety Orenburgskaya is the fruit of his numerous experiments and scientific research. This plant is strongly plaited, looks like a cucumber, but the whips are stronger, with large melon leaves. Unripe fruits (greens) up to 12 cm long taste like a cucumber, they can be picked already in late June - early July. They are dark green, densely pubescent, fit tightly to the lashes. As the fruit grows back, the fluff thinns and almost disappears. Zelentsy can be eaten fresh or processed - salted, pickled, canned.

By August, the greens grow and ripen, juicy, fragrant melons weighing up to two kilograms of round-elongated-oval shape are obtained. The fruits turn yellow, sometimes they become reticulate. One bush grows up to 10-12 melons. The fruit has an aromatic smell, the taste is quite sweet.

Chinese variety of cucumber Watermelon - the young fruits of this plant resemble a striped oval watermelon in their appearance, they have the same hard crust as a watermelon, and the pulp, while the fruit is green, resembles a fragrant, crispy cucumber. But when ripe, these cucumbers turn not into a sour seed cucumber, but into a sweet, fragrant, juicy, aromatic melon. This plant is a real find for gourmets, and even an inexperienced gardener can grow it.

Ogurdins of varieties Melonflechuosus - Marks Dakgrin, Taro, Melanflechuosus Sahio - they differ from ordinary cucumbers in the serpentine shape of fruits, very juicy and tasty. These are herbaceous, rigidly pubescent plants with a powerful creeping stem up to 150 cm long. Their leaves are large, round-heart-shaped, five-lobed. Flowers are dioecious, less often they are bisexual, yellow. Bloom from May to August. Serpentine fruits, polyspermous with juicy, sweet pulp.

Before ripening, they are green, and in the Taro variety they are white-salad, and when ripe they are yellow, in the Taro variety they are milky yellow. These melons taste similar to the common melon, but they have their own flavor - they have a cucumber smell. These are mainly medium-late (65-80 days) varieties.

Plants form many lateral shoots of the second, third, and fourth orders, on which harvests are mainly tied. They grow well in open ground, on trellises. They develop even better in greenhouses, and in winter gardens or in greenhouses they can bear fruit all year round, since they have a very high potential for shoot substitution.

The fruits are mainly 3-5 kg in weight, but there are individual specimens that will pull on the scales for all 8 kilograms! Fruits are round-cylindrical, beautiful serpentine thin shape, 40-90 cm long. Young fruits can be eaten like cucumbers, they are very tender, sweet, they are used for making salads, canning them, salting them. When ripe, the fruits are sweet as melons, tender, good for cooking, especially for making various desserts.

Ogurdyni are also curative. For medicinal purposes, cucumbers are used as a laxative, choleretic, diuretic, anti-sclerotic agent. Juice from their pulp is useful for obesity, diabetes, general weakness, nausea, hypertension, atherosclerosis, colitis.

Gourd varieties Alexandria, Banana, Caramel, Candy, Novinka, Orange banana, Fizano, Manguria, Pineapple - plants are also powerful, with great fruiting potential, fruits from 30 to 50 cm long, have a larger diameter, resemble torpedoes in appearance. In technical ripeness, the fruits are very tasty, crunchy, there are almost no seeds in them. Their color is white, green-striped, like a watermelon or bright orange, depending on the variety. The pulp is very tender, crispy, sweet, can be eaten directly with the skin.

Watermelon-melon - fruits are round or oval, green-striped with a hard crust, yellow-orange pulp, melon with a unique melon aroma, juicy, sweet, crunchy. Weighing up to 500 g.

Very often, another plant is called cucumber - a silver melon (aka an Armenian cucumber). These plants have a lot in common: strong climbing ability, powerful foliage. But if the fruits of a cucumber in biological ripeness turn into melons, then the fruits of an Armenian cucumber are similar in appearance to a cucumber, only very large and ribbed, white, and some resemble zucchini. In addition, the fruits of the silver melon are harvested, not allowing them to overripe, with a length of 20-30 cm.

When overripe (ripening of seeds), the fruits turn yellow and lose their taste, without turning into a melon. But the varieties of cucumbers Watermelon, Barizze, Surprise look like an Armenian cucumber, but when ripe they turn into a melon.

How to grow these wonderful plants? To begin with, they are very fond of sunlight, and when planted in partial shade, fruits may not be obtained at all. Secondly, cucumbers are very demanding on the soil.

The best results are obtained by growing them on a compost heap. This is the property of all pumpkin seeds. But ogurdina can grow on poor soils. Only the size and sweetness of the fruit will not be what we expect. It is advisable to grow ogurdynia on loose soils with a high water-holding capacity.

The fact is that at the initial stage of development, it consumes a lot of water. The rich organic content accumulates irrigation water and smooths out fluctuations in soil moisture. Mulching the soil with hay, straw and compost helps even more. At the same time, the fruits of the cucumber do not bend, and do not burst.

The root system of the cucumber is superficial, so it needs to be watered often, but in small portions. Excellent results are obtained by an automatic, drip irrigation system. With the beginning of ripening of the first fruits, the watering rate should be reduced, since excess water leads to a watery taste of the fruits and a decrease in their sugar content. You can grow cucumber on the ground, or better - on a trellis (cucumber net), as some gardeners grow ordinary melon.

In any case, it should be protected from birds. They are very fond of her sweet thin-cored fruits. Almost the same as ripe figs. It should also be borne in mind that ripe fruits are easily separated from the lash. This means that when grown on a trellis, they will often fall from a great height. This must be monitored.

It is better to grow cucumber in a seedling way - in cassettes, pots and cups. Just like all pumpkin seeds, she does not like transplants and bare roots. Seeds sprout at a temperature of + 20 ° C in 3-5 days.

After 25 days, the seedlings are ready for planting in open ground or a greenhouse. Given that cucumber is more cold-resistant than cucumber or melon, it can be planted before these crops.

Planting under temporary film shelters will help you harvest much earlier. Does not form ovaries on the main stem of the plant. For early fruiting, the cucumber plant is pinched after the sixth true leaf. Then, on the shoots of the second, third orders, female flowers appear en masse. Ogurdynya bears fruit all summer, until frost. According to our data, cucumber is more resistant to pests and diseases than cucumber and melon.

As a fertilizer for cucumbers, an infusion of a mixture of mullein with chicken dung is most suitable. The ratio of these types of droppings depends on the intensive growth of the lashes. You should not get carried away with chicken droppings due to the high nitrogen content in it. In film greenhouses, high temperatures are often observed during the summer. Because of this, cucumbers often shed their ovaries, so you need to try to keep the temperature no higher than + 30 ° C at this time.

The fruits set well and grow at an air temperature of + 25 ° C. In this case, the soil should not warm up above + 25 ° C. To speed up the filling of zelents, the lashes must be pinned to the soil and, to enhance nutrition, sprinkle them with earth (when grown on the ground).

The advantage of cucumbers can be attributed to its ability to be well stored (up to 50 days). At temperatures close to 0 ° C and good ventilation in the basement, such melons can lie until winter. The taste of cucumber fruits also differs from melon. They have a wide range of shades - from peach to banana.
