A decorative apple tree from a seedling produces fragrant and tasty fruits

In the fall of 1984, at the market in the city of Lomonosov, I bought a kilogram of apples. The owner said they were from the Pskov region. The apples were very beautiful - medium size, aligned, conical, bright red (anthocyanin) in color. Even the pulp was pink. And had a very pleasant sweet and sour taste.

I sowed all the seeds from these apples in the ground in the same autumn. The next year, as a result of primary selection, I left for further cultivation four seedlings with a pronounced anthocyanin color of leaves and signs of a cultivated plant (leaf blade, low tapering of shoots, short internodes, thornlessness). The rest of the seedlings were used as rootstocks for grafting. To date, I have culled three more seedlings out of four left earlier, only one remained, which first fruited in 1996. For 22 years of its life, this tree has never suffered from our winters.

The vigor of growth is moderate, I would say that it is approaching a semi-dwarf, the crown is widely spreading, the branches are drooping with an obtuse angle of departure. In the spring and in the first half of summer, the leaves are bright red, then they turn dark green with reddish veins. The flowers are large, bright, dark pink in color. The apples ripen at the end of August or in the first half of September.

They are large in size - from 120 to 180 g, bright red in color, round and cone-shaped, at the stage of full maturity, the apples are as if translucent, "liquid", juicy and very pleasant to the taste. All my friends who have tasted these apples immediately wanted to have the same apple tree in their garden. A unique feature of this seedling is the combination of decorativeness of the tree with large fruits and high palatability. I want to note that the apples from this seedling under normal conditions (on the veranda) are stored until mid-November.

It is important that the yield of this apple tree is high - not inferior to Antonovka. I, of course, started work on propagating an interesting fruit tree. It works well on seedlings, as well as on Budagovsky's paradise (height about 2 meters) and on a semi-dwarf rootstock 54-118. It is better to form this tree in a flattened shape, elongated along the row, otherwise, due to its spreading, it occupies too much area. Unfortunately, there is no variety without flaws. My apple tree is not without them. This is a low resistance to scab - at the level of the old Russian varieties Antonovka, Osenny striped, Grushovka Moskovskaya - and the frequency of fruiting.

However, given the combination of decorativeness, winter hardiness, productivity and high taste, I continue to propagate this apple tree and believe that it can take its rightful place in the gardens of our region. The tree first bloomed and bore fruit in 1996. In the autumn of the same year, my granddaughter was born. Therefore, I named my seedling "Vnuchkino".
