Katyang asparagus beans

Many interesting and useful plants grow in our garden. There are several varieties of cowpea among them. Someone, perhaps, will hear about such a plant for the first time. Meanwhile, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata ssp. L.) is an annual climbing thermophilic plant with long fleshy asparagus beans reaching a meter in length.

It belongs to the legume family. She is originally from Central Africa. The cowpea also has other names - cowpeas or asparagus lobia. Depending on the variety, this crop can have a different color, length and shape. Moreover, its beans can grow up to one meter in length, and their diameter reaches two cm.

Juicy young cowpea blades with pulp filling the entire space between the valves are harvested when the seeds in the beans do not exceed the size of a wheat grain. Beans and seeds are very nutritious, contain a lot of protein, starch, vitamins A, B and C, mineral salts, calcium, iron and other useful substances. It is used both in cooking and for medicinal purposes, for example, by diabetics.

And also used for diseases of the liver, kidneys, heart, pancreas, anemia. The cowpea pods contain sodium and potassium, so it is used for edema, helping to remove excess fluid from the body. It is recommended in fasting diets for obesity, it helps to get rid of extra pounds.

By the content of complete proteins, cowpea is ahead of fish and approaches meat with high nutritional value. Most often, young beans are used in food, which are added to soups, salads and casseroles. Also cowpea pods can be canned and frozen.

Since the bean curly bean, it needs support. It tolerates shading well, which is why we have grown it along with corn for many years. We sow this crop, and when the plants rise to a height of 20 cm, we carry out thinning, leaving a distance of 30 cm between the corn stalks. At the same time we carry out weeding and loosening of the rows there. Immediately after thinning, we plant cowpea beans to the corn.

As with all legumes, the cowpea has an asparagus shoulder blade that is long, green, and rich in nutrients. We prepare salads from them, preserve them - in general, we prepare the same dishes as from ordinary asparagus beans.

This plant is quite fruitful, therefore, in order to provide cowpea beans, say, such a family as ours - of 8 people, it is enough to have 20-30 bushes of this leguminous plant. In row spacings we sow it at a distance of 60-70 cm. In rows - 30 cm. 100-200 seeds are enough for 10 m². Harvest the green beans as they ripen. For grain (seeds) - when the beans are completely dry.
