The norichnik is found in the European part of Russia, in the Urals, in Siberia. It settles in floodplain meadows, on damp forest edges, along the banks of rivers, lakes, swamps.

The plant contains a large amount of saponins and a poisonous component - the alkaloid scrofularin.
