Recently, among amateurs and specialists of indoor floriculture, there has been a growing interest in keeping plants in florariums - decorative indoor greenhouses.
In the florarium for plants, it is very easy to create conditions close to their native climate. On the other hand, the florarium, along with an aquarium and a terrarium, is gaining popularity as an element of interior decoration. Indeed, a small piece of the rainforest, brought into our apartments, will make any interior unique.
Having fired up the idea of creating a home jungle, you need to think over the style of your future living corner in advance. I tentatively identified three main types of florarium design: specific, biotopic and decorative.
A species usually contains a certain thematic group of plants that have the same requirements for cultivation conditions, whether it is your favorite collection of orchids or ferns.
A biotopic florarium is usually created to maintain a number of plant species that have the same conditions of maintenance and grow in nature together in the same territory.
In the design of this type, emphasis is placed on the creation of a certain fragment, a certain corner of nature, a biotope, decorated in the appropriate spirit, say, for example, the Amazon forests or the Central African swamps.
The decorative style is the most common, it has an exclusively compositional meaning. The decorative florarium can contain plants from all over the world, the main thing here is aesthetic perception.
When designing such a florarium, it is necessary to use, in addition to the plants themselves, as many possible additions as possible (stones, driftwood, pieces of bark, coconut fiber, etc.). When creating a species florarium, which is very popular with professionals, one should first of all think over the design features, depending on the group of species planned for keeping.
In addition to beautiful interior decoration and aesthetic pleasure, the florarium is a fertile ground for the embodiment of creative ideas for creating mesmerizing compositions behind glass that attract the eyes of others. In addition, the florarium allows you to successfully maintain whimsical plant species, which in the usual cool dry room air, if somehow survive, then slowly degrade.
The florarium creates its own individual microclimate, primarily due to the stabilized temperature and light parameters, as well as air humidity. All this contributes to rapid rooting, healthy development and growth, as well as flowering of plants.
Usually florariums, like aquariums, are constructed of glass. The technology of bonding silicate glass with silicone sealants, widely used in recent years, allows you to create a variety of shapes - from simple rectangular to complex polygons. At the same time, I want to pay special attention to the strength and elegance of such structures, which makes them even more attractive.
When choosing a basic design, you should also pay attention to the thickness of the glass, which primarily depends on the size of the florarium. Since the bottom of your greenhouse is under the greatest load, therefore, the glass thickness for it should be a couple of millimeters larger. The design must provide, depending on the species planned for keeping, natural or forced air ventilation, as well as bottom heating.
The last technical introduction gives excellent results, as the supply of heat directly to the root system of the plants noticeably improves the well-being of the latter. Above is usually a cover with a block of fluorescent lamps mounted in it, which can be equipped with a timer and set the "on-off" lighting mode. This is especially true if you are leaving home for a long time or you simply do not have enough time to look after your indoor garden.
A fairly common type of florarium among lovers of marsh plants and humid tropics, in particular, is the paludarium (from the Latin palus - "swamp"), characterized by the presence of an aquatic environment. To revive the landscape, a few fish, snails, and amphibians are kept in the paludarium. They not only decorate the underwater garden, but also participate in the most important biological processes, producing organic matter and carbon dioxide.
Paludarium can become an excellent alternative to an aquarium, combining two elements: water and land, in which both purely aquatic plants (hydrophytes) and semi-aquatic plants (hygrophytes) will develop harmoniously. The upper part of the tropical garden can be decorated with hanging philodendrons or unusual mossy tillandsia.
It is very interesting to observe aquatic plants in the paludarium, most of which, at a low water level and a warm, humid environment above the surface, begin to sprout and bloom, although sometimes changing their former appearance. Vivid representatives of such a transformation are representatives of the aroid family - cryptocarines.
A modern florarium is not only a home for your favorite plants, but also an unusual element of interior decoration. Therefore, decorating its landscape, try to get as close to nature as possible, repeat its deeds, creating a picturesque tropical garden behind glass …
