I want to tell you about a very interesting, one might even say, exotic ornamental and medicinal plant. This is white bryony, or white step. It is a perennial climbing herb. It reaches a height of 2-3 meters.
The root of the bryony is unusual - it is turnip, white, fleshy. The leaves are palmate, toothed. The flowers are small, yellowish-white with five fused petals, the fruit is a black berry.
The white cross is common in Central and Eastern Europe, in Central and Asia Minor. It grows on forest edges, along river valleys, among bushes, near vegetable gardens, near houses. Also, this plant is cultivated in gardens and front gardens as an ornamental culture. It also has other popular names: Adam's root, baranchium herb, znieva herb, damn turnip.

In addition to the fact that bryony as a liana serves to decorate the garden, it is also known as a plant-healer. For medicinal purposes, a turnip root is used, which is harvested in early spring or late autumn. The roots are dug up, carefully cleaned from the ground, washed thoroughly, cut into pieces and dried under awnings or in dryers at a temperature of + 40 … + 50 ° C.
In folk medicine, a tincture or infusion of these roots is sometimes used as an analgesic, hemostatic and wound healing agent, but you should not get too carried away with self-medication, as this can lead to paralysis, which, by the way, is reflected in some of the popular names of this plant.
It is safer to take the step in homeopathic doses. Homeopathic remedy "Briony" is made from fresh roots of the perestroika. It is prescribed for rheumatism, gout and muscle pain of various origins.
The pharmaceutical industry also produces Brionia ointment, which is used externally for coughing. In folk medicine, the ointment is also used for skin diseases and lesions of the scalp. Here is a recipe for its preparation: fresh roots are thoroughly washed, boiled in water for 1-2 minutes, passed through a meat grinder and squeezed out the juice. Then 20 ml of juice is mixed with 40 g of lanolin or butter. Then add 40 ml of petroleum jelly in small portions and mix everything well.
It must be remembered that this whole plant is poisonous. When grown, it is unpretentious, grows successfully in moderately fertile soil in the sun or in partial shade. Propagated by sowing seeds in March for seedlings or sowing seeds in autumn to a permanent place. You can also propagate bryony by dividing the rhizomes in March and early April.
