New non-standard solutions in garden design
Time-tested traditional plant compositions and perfected over the centuries variants of small architectural forms for the garden enjoy unchanged success all over the world. However, neglecting the search for new solutions in the design of gardens is as foolish as refusing to write new poetry, citing the great poetic heritage of mankind. Original modern projects, expressive, harmonious and progressive, cause sincere admiration. The best of them are destined to become the same classics over the years.
There are many names for non-standard garden solutions, among which the most common are "minimalism", "avant-garde" and high-teck. The idea of any of the listed landscape styles has not been formed very clearly today. The concept of high-teck is especially controversial. The press is replete with descriptions of high-tech gardens, in which "chaotically planted plants make their way through rusty iron."
Without pretending to be the ultimate truth, let us note that high-teck is literally translated as "high-tech", i.e. the design should contain certain objects, the very appearance of which in the garden became possible only thanks to the progress of technology. Any hand-made is "contraindicated" to this style, on the contrary, all used items, ideally, should be made mainly at the factory, by the flow method. And from this point of view, the garden, in which modern halogen lamps are built into the canvas of the garden path, is much more hi-tech than those compositions where rusted piles of metal act as style-forming elements.
The extreme form of the high-teck garden style was the garden offered to the audience at the exhibition in Chelsea the year before last, in which there was not a single living plant at all, but only their imitation, and made of materials of the latest generations. The project did not gain much fame for itself - this is understandable: situations brought to the point of absurdity rarely arouse public sympathy.
Nevertheless, there are so many deviations from the classics in our time that it is impossible to close our eyes to it. In order not to get confused in questions of terminology, let us designate everything that will be discussed today as a garden vanguard. Let us not forget that everything new is well forgotten old, and with such a complacent mood we will try to look at those modern garden design options that will allow us to feel like people of the 21st century.
Light and color
The easiest and most reliable way to impress the layman "not intimidated" by progressive gardens is to use an automatic garden lighting system in the garden. In an avant-garde garden, preference should be given to lamps made in a minimalist style. Together with original solutions for illuminating reservoirs, such options are quite rightly perceived as ultra-modern.
The colors of small architectural forms for a classic garden are natural, soft, imitating natural, natural shades. Therefore, as soon as something radically red or piercing yellow appears on the garden horizon, it is already perceived as a rebellion against the ordinary. However, the "iconic" color of the avant-garde gardens became bright blue. In nature, it is not so common: blue foliage does not exist at all, and there are much fewer plants with blue or cornflower-blue petals than pink, white or red buds. Meanwhile, blue goes well with the dominant greenery in the gardens. It is also a deeply revered shade in all esoteric sciences, and since many modern gardens claim to be conceptual compositions, somewhat mystical, the popularity of this color is natural and understandable.
You can use color in unexpected ways. You can follow the path of radical investment in your garden and make colored glass steles in the garden - large, flat and more like doors, behind which, of course, a certain secret is hiding … There is an option as simple as possible - to use a dump of chips of some kind on the flower beds bright color, since garden centers now offer such dumps in abundance.
You can try to repeat the act of American landscape architects who put blue plastic bottles on the branches of a dried bush. In combination with the iron masks installed there and the unusual selection of plants, this makes an impression …
So, do not be afraid of color, experiment, dare; it's never too late to return to the classics.
Progressive reservoir
Who will deny himself the pleasure of building a reservoir on his personal plot! The classics of the genre are a babbling fountain, a running stream or a small pond. However, why then should we achieve progress? With their help, you can arrange a real revelry of the water element, even if the site is small in size! It is only necessary to be puzzled by the installation of the appropriate equipment (powerful pumps and purification systems), and also not to forget to correctly highlight the hydrotechnical miracle under construction in order to be able to admire the stormy stream in the darkness of the night.
A pond may become a less costly structure, but it should be made in an unusual way, with the
intensive use of geoplastics, creating, for example, high embankments that abruptly drop off to the water. The bridge across such a reservoir should be as non-standard as possible, and, on the contrary, it is advisable to plant the most natural vegetation, which can be found at every step, barely leaving the garden fence. Such a contrast will play into the hands of those who like to shock the adherents of the classics - the effect is guaranteed.
Decorating the side of a garden pond with ultra-modern materials, decorating the shore with avant-garde sculptures and at the same time planting garden classics here - standard plants or topiary forms - is a simple and convincing way to demonstrate your aspiration for tomorrow based on old, good traditions. When attracting garden sculpture to the creation of a composition, the main thing is not to get carried away and observe the harmony of lines and proportions in the space being formed, so that from being near the pond there is a feeling of light coolness, as, in fact, from the water itself.
One of the favorite tricks of today's gardeners is to use galvanized
"household" vessels in unexpected ways. The French create giant watering cans, which are supplied with water by means of pumps, and, flowing out, does not fall to the ground, but continues on its way in the garden along a gutter of the same metal raised above the ground. By the way, such a reservoir solves the issue of "watering" in areas with high groundwater. Often, galvanized troughs and baths are used as a small artificial garden pond, which were previously recommended to be masked with bulk soil. Today, the more frank, the better.
Glass and mirror
Many garden compositions, being essentially classical, can radically "rejuvenate" if display glass or glass sculptures are correctly applied in the garden. Glass is a more than appropriate material in a garden, as it is as fragile as Nature itself. Incredibly colors the garden and makes it unusual to use large glass aquariums. At one time, a giant imitation of an aquarium, presented to the world at the Expo-2000 exhibition in Hanover, made a lot of noise.
Ordinary birches were used as algae, medium-sized boulders were used as pebbles, and the visitors of this garden actually served as fish. Moreover, thanks to the bridges laid high above the ground,
"people-fish" had the opportunity to "swim" between the tops of birches - quite original and funny …
Mirrors in the garden, as in any other limited volume, work for space. The main thing is not to overdo it with their use, so that there is no complete loss of orientation in space. As with the use of glass forms, arranging stylish mirror "things" among the greenery, you should take care of the safety of both the actual objects that can be accidentally destroyed and people who are faced with a transparent-fragile material.
