Features of growing tomatoes in open and closed ground

It is hard to imagine that 30 years ago no one even thought of growing tomatoes in the gardens of our region. But now, on the contrary, it is difficult to find a vegetable garden in which tomatoes are not grown.

Tomatoes are delicious salads, healthy juice, incredible ketchups and all kinds of winter preparations.

Everyone has long been convinced of the benefits of tomatoes from their own experience: good health, a wonderful complexion, a desire to do something useful for humanity - all this gives a vegetable garden with tomatoes. It is clear that the point here is not only the richness of the fruit with vitamins and mineral salts.

For example, quite recently, scientists told us that a substance was found in tomatoes - lycopene, thanks to which the tomato becomes orange-red, - this substance has biological activity, neutralizes free radicals and other toxic substances. So now, without tomatoes, a vegetable garden is not a vegetable garden.

Breeders, seeing such a craving for tomatoes, immediately set to work. It used to be very troublesome to grow tomatoes in our region, after all, tomato is a southern plant. Now they have developed new varieties that make it easier to work with this plant: high-yielding, early maturing and cold-resistant, disease-resistant, moreover, tolerating increased soil acidity and even drought. The latter quality is important not only for the southern regions, but also for ours, for those gardeners who choose their plots only once a week.

Each gardener sets his own goals and objectives for growing tomatoes. Some are grown for sale, others - to feed a large family with fresh vegetables and make more preparations for the winter; some like to amaze themselves and their neighbors with exoticism or to show some unusual tomato at an exhibition. There are varieties for all tasks.

Today there is an incredible number of tomato varieties for literally every taste. Now there are tomatoes, white, green, yellow, orange, pink, red of all shades, brown, striped and speckled. In addition to color, they have different fruit shape, size and taste, different shape and height of the bush, purpose, they also differ in resistance to different growing conditions and different diseases.

A gardener from Sweden has put together a collection of varieties in which we have hitherto unseen tomatoes. For example, there are fruits that, in cross section, give a silhouette of a chamomile, or ampelous tomatoes, whose stems hang down. They can be planted in hanging vases in the room, in the loggia, on the balcony. True, the seeds of such varieties are only in Sweden.

Every year every reputable seed company offers many new varieties, some of which are well-forgotten old varieties. It is clear that it is impossible to list them. We can only talk about some noteworthy novelties. True, advertising of varieties offers them exclusively in an excellent degree as the most - the most productive, tasty and unpretentious in the world, etc. Sometimes there are simply inaccuracies in it.

For example, to attract buyers, it is said that the variety does not need pinching. We must constantly remember that in our area everything must be pinned, otherwise the crop simply will not have time to ripen. Or even more "cool" advertising: they offer varieties that, they say, can withstand frosts down to minus 5 degrees. It also needs to be treated critically.

So, about the varieties:

In the Leningrad Region, only a few varieties can yield in the open field, and even then in its southern half and in hot summer. In general, under open ground, they often mean beds covered with one or another film, and in cold weather they also use additional insulation there.

Of the old varieties, the following varieties have proven themselves well here: White filling, Dubok, Gruntovy Gribovsky, Agata, Nevsky, Danna, Moskvich, Early 83 and many others. Newer ones are Boney M, Beta, Alaska. Snowdrop, Yamal, Taimyr, Snegurochka, Little Red Riding Hood are doing well. All of them give small fruits - 35-100 grams each. The super early ripening varieties Milashka, Masquerade ultra early ripening, Alpha, Chinese early, as well as ultra early ripening varieties with original transparent yellow rounded fruits of 70-90 g each, Amber, early ripening Far North SeDeK, have shown themselves well.

Gardeners also succeed in a variety with much larger Gin fruits - up to 300 g. There are many other varieties, but they give less stable yields, and not all have been verified by sufficient experience.

This year, breeders are offering new items that can be grown under temporary film shelters and in the open field, for example, some of them are the fastest ripening:
