Fishing tales

What angler does not get excited when he sees or hears splashes of fish … Immediately there is a natural desire to try to catch them. This happened to me. On a May afternoon, slowly moving along the bank of a small river, I fished for the most suitable (in my opinion) places. Fishing went with varying success: occasionally it was possible to catch two or three decent fish, but basically either a trifle came across, or there were empty bites.

So I got to the bend, from which the dense thickets of willows began. The branches of the bushes hung so low over the water that it seemed that they were about to plunge into it. While I was looking for a "window" among the intricate branches where I could throw the bait, several times from under the bushes I could clearly hear the splashes of fish. Near one of these places, where there were especially many splashes, I stopped.

However, I was in vain, over and over again throwing the rod into a seemingly "fishy" place. There were no bites. The float only swayed lazily on the ripples of water. But the fish was still actively splashing under the bushes, but for some reason they were not at all interested in my bait. In vain I changed the baits: I tried to catch it with a worm, then with bloodworms, then with caddis flies, and even with vegetable baits. Alas, everything is empty.

But why did the fish stay here? Why? Putting my fishing rod down on the grass, I began to carefully examine the branches of the willow bushes. And soon on some of them I found leaves rolled into a tube. Unfolding one of them, I saw a caterpillar in it. So that's who the fish was hunting! Delighted, I immediately put the caterpillar on the hook. However, contrary to my joyful expectation, there were still no bites.

On reflection, I planted the folded leaflet in its entirety. And what began here … As soon as the nozzle touched the water, several fish rushed at it at once. And I dragged the roach one by one. When there were no leaves with caterpillars on the branches of nearby bushes, and I did not want to go to another place, and there was enough fish caught, I began to plant just folded leaves on the hook.

And the nibble continued! True, it was necessary to hook with lightning speed, since the fish quickly detected deception and either immediately spat out an empty leaf, or was poorly spotted and got off the hook. I don’t presume to judge which insect caterpillar I was able to catch so successfully (yes, to be honest, it didn’t interest me at all), but the bite was excellent. Such, which is remembered for a long time.
