Does a water one live with you?

I walk between the beds, enjoy - finally greenery, finally warm. Everything is sown and planted, fertilized, and at heart is calm. Then the little son comes up: "Mom, are there any devil, mermaids and mermaids?" He asks with the hope of an affirmative answer, because you really want to believe in miracles when you are four years old.

I look around and understand that in our gardening, as in many others, there is nothing mysterious - only houses and beds. Where can the mysterious heroes of children's fantasies settle here? And I don’t want to disappoint the child so much … While I was thinking about what to say, Danya himself had already found a way out: “Let's plant a forest here, then the goblin will live with us”. The forest is, of course, good, but when every spring the question arises of where else to cram a few beets and a little peas, the idea of a forest on a site sounds even more fantastic than the very existence of goblin. After a joint discussion, we decided that mermaids and aquatic creatures are more compact creatures, and we will settle them on our site: after all, a small reservoir will take up less space than the smallest forest.

We chose a shady spot between the apple and cherry trees - the most mysterious in the garden - and set to work. In general, it is not recommended to place a pond under trees, because leaves, faded flowers will fall into the water, clog it. Well, we will have to collect debris from the surface of the water more often. But our future reservoir will not overheat on a hot summer afternoon, and the fish (our underwater king needs subjects!) Will feel comfortable.

With the size of the reservoir, everything was clear, it was determined by a free piece of land, they decided to make the form the simplest - rounded, slightly elongated. We marked a contour on the ground, dug a hole. One bank was made lower so that in spring or during prolonged rains, excess water would pour out of the reservoir and it would not turn into a swamp.

The two coped in an hour, and it is difficult to say who helped whom - the son tried his best, chose the largest shovel in the barn, because he embodied his own idea. The depth of the reservoir turned out to be about 70 cm. "There are such small aquatic ones, - said Danya, - such people will like it here." And a pond of such depth is suitable for fish.

After the foundation pit for the future reservoir has been dug, you need to tamp its bottom. This process caused Dani a lot of positive emotions - he had to stamp his feet, moreover, as hard as possible. Then we poured a thin layer of sand on the bottom (you can use peat instead of sand), about 5 cm, so that the film that we put in the reservoir is less deformed by tree roots and small stones. We slightly moistened the sand and tamped it down again. When there was no more strength to stomp, they began to lay the film on the bottom.

We took a special film for the construction of reservoirs, it is not scary to leave it for the winter - it will not crack from frost and will last a long time, because it is a pity if all our beauty will please us only one or two seasons. So that the film does not suffer from ice pressure in winter, wooden balls or empty plastic bottles are usually thrown into the reservoir, which relieve pressure from the banks, protecting the film.

Straightening the folds of the film from the center to the banks, Danya rolled to his heart's content and crawled into the pit. The edges of the film must be cut off after the reservoir is filled with water. Therefore, we took a hose, filled the hole - at first by 1/3, and two hours later - to the brim. This is done so that air can escape from under the film during these two hours, and the soil settles under the weight of water. After that, Danya himself cut off the excess film with scissors, leaving 30 cm to mask the edges.

We decided to close the film with stones around the perimeter of the reservoir, and plant moisture-loving plants behind the stones. From what grew on the site, we chose a swimsuit, daylily, hostu and astilba. Then we walked around the neighborhood, dug a yellow marsh iris in a nearby ditch, and brought a fern from the forest. According to the rules, it is necessary to draw up the banks of a newly made reservoir in 1-2 days, but we had to hurry up - until the excitement disappeared, and I want to say that nothing bad happened because the plants were planted right away, but, on the contrary, With a sense of accomplishment in front of all the watermen in the world, Danya and I went to bed.

We have a lot of things to do for tomorrow: we need to plant reeds, a water lily and a calla in our pond, call frogs and dragonflies for housewarming, and most importantly, find out what little mermen love most, how to make friends with them and what to treat.
