Kalanchoe pinnate

Previously, this plant could very often be seen in rural huts and in the apartments of townspeople. It is now less common. How can this be explained? There may be several versions here.

Perhaps housewives are now chasing more fashionable plants now, to which home designers include fuchsias, azaleas, palms, hippeastrum and others, which have unusually beautiful flowers.

Another reason: projects of residential buildings have appeared, in which a window sill is not provided at all, on which indoor plants are often grown. Of course, the most enthusiastic flower growers find a way out here too - they put their favorite plants on various shelves, stands, tables next to the window. Such a reason is also possible - the wide development of the pharmacy business. Just a little - people run to the pharmacy.

And by the way, this plant used to very often help people out, and now it helps those who know about its medicinal properties. It is no coincidence that the people invented many other respectable names for him: the tree of life, indoor ginseng and even a surgeon without a knife.

What kind of plant are we talking about? And this is all about him - about the Kalanchoe.

Science knows over two hundred species of this plant. They mainly grow in tropical regions and South Africa, as well as islands such as Madagascar. And also - in South and Southeast Asia, in the tropics of South America. Kalanchoe is a genus of evergreen succulent plants belonging to the Tolstyankov family. But we are primarily interested in two species from this large list.

It was they who were brought to Europe, and then to our country, and occupied an honorable place on the windowsills in the apartments of experienced housewives, combining two roles - that of an unusual ornamental plant and a home doctor. These two perennial herbaceous succulent plants are Kalanchoe pinnata and Kalanchoe daigremontiana.

Kalanchoe Degremona

Kalanchoe Degremona is a rather original plant with a straight stem, without branches, reaching a height of up to one meter. It has opposite, triangular, fleshy leaves, angled upward from the stem, with serrated edges curved inward. When viewed from the side, it is the serrated edges of the leaves that attract attention.

It seems that some scales or small leaves are attached to them in a row. These are the so-called brood buds or babies. It is with the help of them that this type of Kalanchoe multiplies: they separate from the mother plant and fall down. And they take root quite easily. It can also be propagated by cuttings and seeds.

Kalanchoe pinnate looks simpler: it also has a straight, non-branching stem, but a higher one, lignifying at the base with age. It can reach a height of one and a half meters or more. And his leaves are also opposite, juicy, thick, but not triangular, but ovoid or elliptical.

You can propagate this type of Kalanchoe by seeds, but in an apartment it will be more convenient to propagate it in a vegetative way. To do this, you need to take a leaf of this plant and put it in a pot with the prepared soil with the bottom side up, and then sprinkle it with sand around the edges with a layer of 2 cm, compact it. Moisten the soil. Several young Kalanchoe plants can sprout from this leaf, which, after the appearance of 4-5 leaves in them, can be carried to separate pots.

Medicinal properties of Kalanchoe

It is these two types of Kalanchoe - Kalanchoe pinnate and Kalanchoe Degremona, due to the presence of many useful substances in their composition, and are used for medicinal purposes, more precisely, not the whole plant, but its juice obtained from the leaves and stem. This juice contains flavonoids, catechins, tannins, organic acids - malic, citric, isolimonic, oxalic; polysaccharides, enzymes, micro- and macroelements - silicon, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, iron, copper, manganese; vitamins P, C and other substances.

To obtain juice, young leafy shoots are cut off. Before harvesting raw materials, the plant is not watered for a week. After cutting, the shoots are kept in a refrigerator for seven days at a temperature of + 5 … + 10 ° C. According to experts, such keeping plants in the dark at low temperatures contributes to the accumulation of biogenic stimulants important for the treatment of many diseases. After aging in the refrigerator, the raw materials are crushed and squeezed out.
