Zamaniha high (Oplopanax elatus)
Zamaniha high is less known to most gardeners than eleutherococcus spiny. According to one of the legends, the lure got its name due to the bright (red) color and original shape of the fruits, which clearly stand out against the background of green leaves and attract birds.
In nature, it grows in high-mountain spruce-fir and birch forests, narrow gorges, sometimes on steep rocky high-mountain slopes and talus in the south of Primorsky Krai: it occurs in groups, sometimes forming thickets. Its reserves are extremely limited, since after harvesting the roots, it is poorly renewed.

This deciduous, low-growing shrub has a growing season of about 90 days. The plant has a long thick creeping rhizome, which has a peculiar smell. The trunk of the plant is straight, light gray (up to 1.5 m in height), seated with numerous brittle thorns. Leaves are large, alternate, rounded with a cordate base, 5-7-lobed. The flowers are small, bisexual, grouped in drooping umbrellas; blooms in June-July.
The fruit is a fleshy bright red or yellowish-red globular drupe; fruits ripen in August-September. Berries, clearly visible against the background of green coniferous trees, are readily eaten by birds that spread seeds. Unfortunately, they are characterized by a very low germination rate, therefore, in nature, the plant is more often spread by root shoots.
The light-loving and winter-hardy plant prefers peat-humus soils with a good humus layer, places with high air humidity.
It is very difficult to propagate high lure with seeds, since they have low germination and a long germination period - from 0.5 to 2.5 years, depending on the development of the embryo; need stratification. After the seedlings reach a height of 1-2 cm, their growth somewhat increases, but does not exceed 5-10 cm per year. It should be noted that the growth of young seedlings during the first 5-6 years is extremely weak. For the winter, young plants should be covered with peat or spruce branches. When transplanting a seedling at the age of 2-3 years, 2-3 kg of humus, 2-3 kg of coarse sand and 20-30 g of nitroammofoska are introduced into the hole in a permanent place.
This plant is characterized by a large complex of biologically active substances (alkaloids and glycosides, essential oils, coumarins, flavonoids, resinous substances, etc.). Rhizomes and roots contain a large amount of macro- and microelements (calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, barium, selenium, strontium, manganese, copper, zinc, aluminum, chromium, iodine, vanadium, nickel, cobalt). Zamaniha high is characterized by the targeted accumulation of selenium, strontium and especially barium. All parts of the plant contain steroidal saponins (echinoxosides), which dominate in the complex of biologically active compounds of high lure.
Rhizomes with roots are harvested in the fall after the fruits ripen and the leaves fall. The entire root system is taken out of the ground, trying not to damage it, carefully removing the adhering earth, rotten and blackened areas, cut into pieces no more than 35 cm long and tied into bunches. The raw materials dried under a canopy for 1-3 days are cut into pieces 10-15 cm long, dried in a well-ventilated room. Store in bags in a dry, well-ventilated area for three years.
In medicine, an alcoholic tincture from the rhizomes of high zamaniha is used (1: 5 in 70% alcohol, insisted in a dark, warm place for 15 days, filtered into a dark glass jar) as a mildly acting medicine from the arsenal of stimulating drugs. It acts like a tincture of ginseng, but slightly weaker. Tincture in moderate doses increases blood pressure, while in medium to high doses it lowers it.
It is used for general weakness of the body after suffering debilitating diseases, with physical and mental fatigue, and decreased performance. After its use in mild and moderate forms of diabetes mellitus, a decrease in blood sugar is observed. Before constantly taking medications from a high temptation, it does not hurt to consult a doctor.
