Rhododendrons in a mixborder

Rhododendrons are very valuable plants for design. They bloom so brightly and profusely that even one plant is enough to decorate a small area. Individual plants do not bloom for too long - up to three weeks in cool weather, but by choosing species and varieties with different flowering periods, this process can be extended to two months.

Outside of flowering, rhododendrons are also decorative. In most cases, these are not just shrubs, but dwarf trees, which are so valuable in the design of small gardens. Many rhododendrons (mostly deciduous) are bonsai-shaped and are indispensable in Japanese gardens.

Evergreen rhododendrons create a southern flavor, they can imitate oleanders, magnolias, and therefore are good in the style of a "Mediterranean garden". In natural-style gardens, rhododendrons are successfully combined with conifers, grow well next to wild-growing pines.

Rhododendrons look advantageous both singly in the form of tapeworms, and in groups, small or quite extensive. Groups can be collected from single-sorted plants, creating large color spots, or pick up nuanced or, conversely, very bright contrasting color combinations. Groups of rhododendrons with different flowering periods are good - they bloom all spring and early summer. Combinations in the same group of evergreen and deciduous species are not very successful. Deciduous species and varieties are usually very bright, and against their background the delicate inflorescences of evergreen rhododendrons can be lost.

In mixborders, rhododendrons are well combined with medium-sized shrubs that bloom in the second half of summer, conifers, heathers, erikas, very many herbaceous perennials. The combination of rhododendrons with hydrangeas of different types is especially successful. They have similar requirements for growing conditions, different flowering periods, and similar agricultural techniques.

Special mixborders, the so-called "coniferous-rhododendron", including, in addition to rhododendrons and conifers, hydrangeas, herbaceous and bulbous perennials, decorated with stones, can become the most beautiful parts of the garden. The style and growth conditions are suitable for rhododendrons: Siberian and Japanese irises, astilbe, hosts, ferns, and many decorative deciduous plants.

Rhododendrons look good against the background of decorative mulch, ground cover plants, in gravel gardens.

When using rhododendrons in site design, in addition to the criteria for style and beauty, it is very important to consider the compliance of the selected site with the requirements of specific rhododendrons. It must be remembered that only healthy, well-groomed plants can be beautiful, so it is important to choose the most resistant species and varieties and provide them with proper care. Their compatibility with neighbors in terms of growth conditions and agricultural technology is mandatory.

Plants that require liming of the soil should not grow next to rhododendrons. Companion plants should not compete with rhododendrons for water and food, and should not be too aggressive. Very bad neighbors for rhododendrons: large spruces, birches, maples and other trees with powerful roots, lilacs, lilies of the valley, other shrubs and herbaceous plants with sprawling rhizomes.

Recently, interest in rhododendrons has been constantly growing, various varieties appear on sale. With some knowledge, every gardener can choose and grow the most suitable rhododendrons for him.
