When a four-legged pet reaches a respectable age, you begin to treat it more attentively, trying to notice in time the slightest deviations in health and behavior: you follow changes in appetite and mood, the amount and regularity of feces, listen to sleepy puffing … A strict diet and constant examination of the pet become the norm life. Knowing at what time a particular chronic disease may worsen, you take preventive measures. But, unfortunately, it is impossible to predict everything …

The incomprehensible symptoms of some disease of our kitty Feni put us in a dead end … Blood and urine tests were not bad for a 15-year-old cat.

Again, hoping for help, we go to the veterinary clinic, but this time - to the therapist Sergei Vladimirovich Korotkov, who has already saved our Fenya several times.

- What are you complaining about?

- Fenya does not eat her favorite dietary dry food Hill's k / d, I had to break her diet - to give her meat. The hooligan animal does not play at all, he sleeps most of the time. On top of that, she limps on both left paws … Maybe she breathed in the exhaust plug? - my mother and I suggested.

On the basis of a clinical examination of our "armed bandit" Sergei Vladimirovich diagnosed otitis media and prescribed treatment.

- Call me in five days …

- Yes, we will call!

- And more … - he turned to the girls-assistants, pointing to our Fenya. - Put a cotton-gauze bandage on her.

- What for? - we all were surprised.

- And then she is in a traffic jam, breathing exhaust gases, - joked, smiling, Sergei Vladimirovich.

The diagnosis surprised us a lot, but we followed all the doctor's instructions. … And after two days Fenya began to eat dry food, and after five she stopped limping.

Inborn talent and extensive experience made Sergei Vladimirovich a unique specialist. He feels the pain of animals and knows how to help them. Quite by chance, I found out that Sergei Vladimirovich had been working in America for over a year, and asked him to tell me about it.

So, I am going to the Veterinary Clinic located at the Military Medical Academy, to Sergei Vladimirovich. Today he promised to show me how to conduct a home examination of an animal. His favorite Staffordshire Terrier Bormann will act as a model of the patient.

- Are you without an animal? - Asked me a girl administrator when I entered the clinic.

- Yes. My healthy (thanks to Sergey Vladimirovich) animal sits at home.

shiny; the figure is excellent. The animal is frisky, active, friendly.

Then the temperature was measured using a thermometer smeared with petroleum jelly, which was introduced for 3-4 minutes into the anus. The normal body temperature of an adult dog is 38.5-39.0 ° C.

- Sergey Vladimirovich, tell us, please, where did you study? How did you get your internship in America? What did you do there?

- In 1984 he graduated from the Leningrad Veterinary Institute (now the St. Petersburg State Academy of Veterinary Medicine). The main place of work is the circus veterinary hospital. Thanks to its director, Evgeny Grigorievich Sibgatulin, he was sent to the United States to a small circus troupe, consisting of trained dogs and cats, where he had to travel around the states with performances (they gave performances in cities). Main functions: preparing animals for performances, caring for them, treatment, providing veterinary services, I had to train animals. I spent 14 months in the USA.

Place of work - Missouri, Brunson. I got acquainted with some veterinarians, with the clinic, methods of treatment. Cozy, small clinic, good equipment. All veterinary drugs are prescribed by a veterinarian. The doctors are very friendly, they immediately made contact: they gave consultations, helped with medicines. Show performers: 9 dogs, 16 cats, pigeons, rats. All dogs and cats were born in America, but the character is purely Russian!

- "Purely Russian" - how's that?

- During the treatment, the cats scratched and bit. In general, there were no serious illnesses for 14 months. Diathesis in a small white poodle and urolithiasis in a cat (was transferred to medicated feeding). In the network of stores "Walmart" they bought feed. There were no problems for 14 months. High quality feed, perfectly balanced.

They gave 2-3 shows in the city, the animals tolerated transfers well. Americans are very fond of animals. For a small town, the arrival of our troupe is a great holiday!

- What are the similarities and differences between Russian and American veterinary medicine?

- I did not see any particular fundamental differences. A slightly different organization of veterinary activities, the attitude of people and doctors to animals is much better. Lack of stray animals (dogs and cats do not run around the streets). The main difference is that in an American hospital, the animal immediately goes to inpatient treatment (this is a common practice). It is very pleasant for animal owners when a postcard with an invitation to vaccinate the animal comes from the clinic every year. For Americans, animal vaccination is the law, 100% done. Animals are vaccinated without exception. There are few infectious diseases. Animals are more fat. They are fed with dry food. Cheap feed (budget) of very high quality, do not cause any special health problems. A large abundance of pet markets in small towns. They have food, deodorants, toothbrushes, toothpaste - everythingwhat is necessary for caring for animals. Veterinary services are expensive. As for the general level of doctors, Americans have a higher level, although our doctors are not worse. We use the experience of foreign colleagues: for example, IV catheters, blood transfusion.

- Please tell us about the blood transfusion procedure.

- Blood transfusion is used for animal injuries, blood loss, acute infectious diseases. There is a blood bank in America. With a single transfusion, the blood type does not matter, but the transfusion has a good effect.

The blood transfusion procedure is carried out as follows: blood is taken from the donor into special bags, anticoagulants are added (as in humans). Blood is injected from the bag to another dog (another animal). Everything happens quickly, gives a quick effect (approx. Author - in the Veterinary Clinic of the VMA, if necessary, a blood transfusion is performed).

As a rule, during any trip with animals (especially if they are wayward entertainers) unusual occurrences occur. Sergey Vladimirovich told me two of them that happened during his trip to the United States.

In a small town in Colorado, the Yorkshire Terrier escaped. At first they tried to find him on foot, then they drove around the block for 15 minutes by car. In the United States, police control animals. They caught the dog, put it in a cage, and called the owners 20 minutes later.

New Jersey. When loading, the dogs were tied to the trailer. The locals thought the dogs were thin, and they called the police. Three police cars arrived!

It seems that in America dogs are equal members of society. In Russia, the attitude towards dogs is not very good, they deserve much more. When we are kinder and the attitude towards animals becomes better, only then can we be considered a civilized country!

We are both concerned about the problem of dog walking in Russia - the lack of places for walking, the feces scattered randomly on the streets. And how is it solved in the USA? It turns out that it is very simple: Americans take a special bag and a spatula for a walk with a dog, with the help of which they clean up after their four-legged pets. Why don't we follow their example?

After we measured the body temperature, assessed the appearance and physical condition of Bormann, we began to examine the head area: eyes, ears, nose, mouth.

A healthy dog should not have discharge from the nose, eyes, ears.

In order to examine the mucous membrane of Bormann's mouth, we (or rather, Sergei Vladimirovich) bent up the upper lip of the animal. The gums and mucous membranes of the dog are moist, pink in color. Bormann gave us permission to check his teeth.

- What animals are kept in America?

- Mostly cats, dogs. In the US, many keep horses, large cats: tigers, leopards.

- I love ALL animals, regardless of their species, age and breed! What breeds do you prefer?

- With true love for animals, the breed does not matter!

Gently pressing our finger on Bormann's inner thigh, we felt for a pulse. The normal heart rate of an adult dog at rest is 70-120 beats per minute. Respiration rate (determined by observing the movement of the chest of an animal) in a healthy dog ranges from 10-30 times per minute.

- What diseases are most common in dogs and cats?

- In dogs - diseases associated with metabolic disorders, dermatitis of allergic origin. I would like to pay special attention to the problems associated with improper feeding: gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhea, vomiting). A large percentage of oncological diseases.

The percentage of infectious diseases is decreasing: the majority of owners vaccinate puppies, so diseases with plague and parvovirus enteritis are less common.

Cats have a large percentage of infectious and oncological diseases; metabolic disorders associated with nutrition. Owners need to pay attention to pet nutrition. Unfortunately, kittens are rarely vaccinated. Infectious diseases are transmitted by airborne droplets (contact with a sick animal is optional). As practice shows, the percentage of infectious diseases decreases with age.

- Some owners try to heal the animals themselves. When can this be done? What does the pet owner need to be able to do himself?

- Better to see a doctor. You need to have available tools and drugs for first aid (for example, activated carbon - the drug is recommended for functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract). It is necessary to consult with your doctor what to do in case of a wasp, bee, snake bite.

- What are the main difficulties in treating dogs and cats?

- Animals don't speak. The initial examination has to be based on clinical studies of the animal and the story of the owner. Later, blood, urine, feces, X-ray, ultrasound diagnostics are connected. In the aggregate of all studies, a diagnosis is made.

There are aggressive animals. Cats are more difficult to work with than dogs. As they say, there is no beast worse than a cat!..

- Please give advice to the owners of old animals (dogs and cats).

- It is necessary to pay attention to the feeding of dogs and cats, to conduct elementary research for the selection of food. Correctly selected food really prolongs the life of the animal.

It is imperative to vaccinate (annually) and deworming (2-3 times a year).

It is necessary to recognize the disease in time, prescribe treatment, diet therapy. Do not self-medicate!

In dogs, take into account all physical activities (should not be too great).

- What are the side effects of vaccination?

- None. Rarely mild malaise. We mainly use modern foreign vaccines (for example, Nobivak, Holland).

- Have you met long-lived animals?

- Cats over 20 years old (23 and over). Dogs: German Shepherd - 15 years old, small dogs - 17-19 years old and older.

- There are many vitamin and mineral supplements. Can the owner independently choose the necessary drug?

- It is better to consult with the attending veterinarian, who will provide more qualified assistance in the selection of a vitamin-mineral preparation, taking into account the physiological and age characteristics of the animal.

- There is such a problem - obesity in animals. What do we have to do?

- It is necessary to choose the right food. After establishing the cause of obesity, side therapy is prescribed.

- How to determine the onset of the disease in an animal? What signs should pet owners look out for?

- Apathy; loss, deterioration in appetite; gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhea, vomiting); increased body temperature, shortness of breath, cough; on a walk the animal is lethargic. Pay attention to the animal's posture (unhealthy posture when the dog curls up into a ball).

At the end of the inspection, we felt the dog's belly. This research method allows you to determine the soreness of the digestive tract, the presence of gas, the degree of accumulation of feces.

Now we can conclude: Bormann is a healthy dog! And tonight I'll start examining our Feni!

PS Observing how with fatherly tenderness Sergei Vladimirovich examines Bormann, I thought about how, after all, animals (unlike most people) are lucky with the attending doctors …
