Construction of a garage at a summer cottage

The choice is large: from the simplest shed to a garage with a viewing hole For every summer resident who has his own car, the question is of no small importance: where to store it?

If there are no problems with theft and hooliganism in the district, then you can build a simple shed (Figure 1). It is a lightweight roof supported by beams and supports. On the most windy side, it is advisable to build a protective wall. In this construction, light timber beams, pipes or corner profiles are the load-bearing element for lightweight roofing.

But when constructing such a canopy, it is necessary to take into account such an important circumstance as protecting the roof from the wind. So that his impulses don't rip her off. And it is also necessary to provide protection against lateral rain and snow. For this, the roof should protrude (hang) on all sides by at least 1 meter.

For more reliable and comfortable storage of the car, you should build a garage (Figure 2). It shows the vehicle in the garage and the minimum distance between it and the walls.

Garages can be wooden, metal (prefabricated), from concrete slabs and brick. Each of these options has both advantages and disadvantages.

A wooden garage is easy to build because the material (wood) is relatively cheap and affordable. But it does not meet, first of all, the fire safety requirements. And the safety of the car itself (you never know what intruder will be found. After all, the tree is so easily ignited!).

A metal garage is much more reliable, but it does not allow you to store the car in optimal conditions … In summer, a metal garage heats up a lot, and in the cold season, as a result of sudden temperature changes, abundant condensation forms, which greatly accelerates the process of corrosion of various parts of the car. The body is especially affected.

For the same reason, you should not make metal gates in a brick garage and a garage from concrete slabs.

As an example, Figure 3 shows a brick garage device. It is built of white sand-lime bricks, on a strip foundation of concrete. The walls are lined with half-brick with corner and intermediate pillars in brick. Such masonry, in addition to being very economical, is also good because the niches between the pillars inside the room can be used to equip racks and shelves.

The roof is sloping, single-pitched, made of wooden beams, placed on the edge and resting on pillars, with a continuous crate of boards 40-50 millimeters thick. Roof waterproofing - from roofing material in three layers with bitumen coating and subsequent sprinkling with fine sand. You can use other, more modern materials instead of bitumen.

The optimal internal dimensions of the garage - 3.5x5.2 meters - allow rational use of the space along the walls. For this purpose, the gate leaf is not provided in the middle, it is somewhat offset to one of the walls, preferably to the left, for the convenience of getting out of the car.

The gate leaves measuring 185x170 centimeters consist of a frame upholstered with clapboard or rebated boards. On the side of the yard, one of the doors has a gate with an internal lock.

However, along with such swing (wing) gates, there may be other more practical ones that take up much less space (Figure 4).

For ease of use in winter, the exit gates are equipped with a removable board from below, which makes it possible to open them even with a large drift of snow. In the side walls of the garage there are two glass-block windows. Ventilation is provided by an asbestos-cement exhaust pipe or a pipe made of thin sheet steel with a diameter of 150 millimeters with a conical nozzle and a hood. You can use a small metal bucket without a bottom as a nozzle.

The floor is cement, without a viewing hole. When building a garage with one gate, its optimal size should be 2.9 x 6.4 meters. In this case, space is freed up for workshop equipment.

Often, garages are built with a gable roof (like a house), which can only be justified by the most rational use of the attic space for storing, for example, boats, boards, and other materials.

A garage at a summer cottage, in addition to its direct purpose, can serve as a place for a home workshop and a cellar for storing food. It should be equipped with lighting, power supply, ventilation, shelves for storing spare parts and consumables; it is quite acceptable to arrange a suspended ceiling - mezzanine.

Fuels and lubricants and paints should be stored in a special metal cabinet, always connected to the ventilation system.

To carry out repair and routine maintenance work in the garage, you need to have a workbench with a vice, and with the most rational use of the piers, you can equip a home workshop here.

In garages, a viewing pit is often arranged. However, its construction, as shown by its practical use, did not justify itself. After all, constantly incoming vapors and the formation of condensation from temperature changes inevitably cause corrosion of the metal parts of the underbody of a car, which is usually standing above the pit.

To some extent, the construction of an inspection pit may be appropriate if the groundwater is below 2.5-3 meters, and it is created in the same block with a basement for storing food. But in this case, it is necessary to plan the garage so that the permanent parking of the car is located away from the inspection pit.
