“… The most widespread way of catching pikes is to catch them with girders. Everyone knows the device of the girdle - it is a flyer with a twine wound on it with a hook on a leash. The name of the zherlitsa is given to the flyer itself, not the hook, and the zherlitsa is a purely Russian invention, very simple and witty … . This was stated by our compatriot, an unsurpassed expert in fishing.

L. P. Sabaneev.

Although the principle of operation of the girder has remained unchanged since that time, in recent years the wooden flyer has been increasingly replaced by other materials and devices. I offer several options for winter girders that have proven their effectiveness.

Such a girdle (Fig. 1) can be made from textolite, thick oiled cardboard, tin and other materials at hand. It is desirable for the material to sink in water. The peculiarity of this girder is that after the predator grabs the live bait, it does not remain suspended from the pole, but glides along the line under its own weight, falling down on the hole or plunging into the water. The line is fixed at the required level with any clamping rubber ring. When biting, it stretches, flies to the side, the line unwinds. The fishing line is nowhere firmly attached to the vent, but only passed through a hole cut in it. Therefore, the zherlitsa can be suspended at any height above the hole.

Equally simple in design is the girder shown in Figure 2. To make it, you just need a spool with a line, a double or tee, a weight and any suitable rod. The rod is frozen in the snow next to the hole and a coil is put on it. The fishing line is slightly clamped in the cleft at the top of the rod and the flag is fixed on it with a paper clip. When biting, the rod bends, the line jumps out of the cleft, and the flag instantly gives a signal.

Another version of the gutter (fig. 3) consists of a cylinder, turned from light wood or hard foam? and stubs. To facilitate it and make it buoyant, a blind hole with a diameter of 21-23 mm must be drilled along the axis of the cylinder. When transporting it, you can remove the tee or tackle. The thickened ends of the cylinder are colored green or gray, and the middle section is bright red. The entire cylinder is covered with colorless varnish. The plug is machined from solid foam. It has a slot for a cord or fishing line. In winter, the zherlitsa can be either suspended on a pole or mounted on three legs made of wire with a diameter of 4 millimeters.

The zherlitsa is quite simple to manufacture in Figure 4. It requires a plastic reel from under the fishing line, two to three millimeter copper or steel wire and a piece of soft molded rubber 5-10 millimeters thick. 10-15 meters of fishing line with a diameter of 0.4-0.5 millimeters is wound on a reel. Using a needle or an awl, the fishing line is threaded through a piece of rubber measuring 10x20 millimeters, and a slot is made in it from the opposite end. Rubber serves as a retainer. By shortening or lengthening the line passed through the rubber, we set the desired descent. Then a sinker and a leash with a loop at the end are placed. Bends out of the wire as shown in the figure. clip with clasp and eyelet. Its lower side serves as the axis for the coil. Such a zherlitsa can be either suspended above the hole or lowered there. When you grip the fish, the rubber stopper slides off the spool, and the line unwinds, without interfering with the predator from swallowing live bait.

In winter, when fishing with girders, you have to walk from hole to hole all the time, freeing them from the ice film. This can be avoided in several ways … One of them is as follows. It is necessary to take a thin plastic tube 15-20 centimeters long, plug it with a soft rubber stopper, and with a needle pull the line of the gutter through it, lubricated, for example, with boiled bacon. Live bait on the fishing line is lowered to the required depth, and the tube in a vertical position is squeezed in the hole with snow. Thus, water does not displace air from the tube, the line is insulated and does not freeze into the ice.

Every angler knows that thin ice is the best time to catch predatory fish with girders. They are sometimes left in the holes overnight, or even for several days. But in this case, they are covered with ice, and without the risk of breaking the line with an ice pick or damaging it with an ice drill, you cannot remove the ice. In order not to risk it, you can punch (drill) a new hole next to the old one, into which the line of the gutter can be drawn. To do this, you need to have a wire with a hook at the end and bend it so that it reaches the line in the main hole (Fig. 5).
