How to build and equip a cozy place for a family vacation

Terrace
Terrace

In summer. The northerners have an incomparably smaller selection of terrace plants than the gardeners of the south. Residents of the north can afford to install spherical boxwood, undersized palms, citrus fruits, bush chrysanthemums, lavender, sage, agave on the terrace in tubs. A pergola entwined with decorative grapes or clematis gives shade in the summer heat.

In addition to beautiful containers, any household utensils are used as containers for planting plants - from an empty canister to the drum of an old, unusable washing machine, as well as pots, pans, wheelbarrows and trailers. For the plants to feel good in them, holes must be made in the bottom of the vessel to drain excess water.

An essential point in the design of a terrace is taking into account the needs of plants in space. Trees require a lot of space only at a young age when they bush and sprout. With age, the crowns move upwards, and below the space is freed up.

Shrubs require the most space. It is advisable to grow them in a standard form, which can be low (up to 30 cm), medium (or half-stem up to 50 cm) and high - more than 1 meter. Other plants can be placed under the spherical crowns - smaller or those that do not like the scorching sun. The terrace is decorated with winter jasmine, forsythia, mahonia, golden yellow cinquefoil, narrow-leaved barberry. You can add a creeping euonymus or a yellow - variegated dogwood.

Blooming carpets form climbing plants that do not require much space. There can be various types of climbing honeysuckle, which give the summer resident yellow or orange-red flowers. Small plants, for example, pelargonium and others, also do not pretend to be a large area; they can be placed on the walls in special pots.

Terrace in blue and blue colors

Terrace owners can create compositions according to their taste in certain colors, for example, in blue and blue tones, or decorate it with sunny colors - yellow and orange. These flowers, even in cloudy weather, give light and attract birds and insects. Yellow and orange go well with red, white, blue, purple. For example, sunflowers coexist well with coreopsis, vases with evening primrose are spectacular with cmin and sedum, blue catnip. Typical representatives of annual yellow flowers - snapdragons, marigolds, calendula, escholzia and coreopsis will complete this sunny picture. All of them, combined with the green tones of the plants, create a calm and cozy atmosphere.

What does a red terrace look like?

Against a dark background of green leaves, the strength of the red tones is weakened. For terraces, annual decorative tobacco is used, captivating with its bright color and smell, roses - curly and bush, geranium. The reds and whites are perfectly charming partners. It is rather difficult to combine them with other colors. Perhaps a good combination is obtained with pink flowers, since pink obeys red. The rich yellow flowers are also good partners for this color scheme. It is not difficult to find a company with plants that have beautiful green decorative leaves.

Among the shrubs, red summer spirea and weigel should be preferred. A beautiful addition - plants with red leaves: various varieties of maple, red varieties of barberry, common hazel. Among annual flowers, celosia, zinnia and others have a fiery red color.

From container plants, hibiscus can be preferred.

White and pink terrace

White is the bride's outfit. It consists of all the components of the spectrum. The terrace, decorated with plants with white flowers, gives the impression of perfection. She looks reserved and quiet, flowers radiate peace. Pure white is called pure white. But often it has a yellow tint or cream, blue.

And then the white color turns into marble, pearl, porcelain white. If you add a little red to it, the flowers turn pink.

To decorate the terrace in these colors, it is proposed to use shrubby chrysanthemum, various roses, bindweed with hanging shoots and white funnel-shaped flowers, a bird garden, terry variegated geraniums. Blue and yellow are in harmony with delicate white.

The choice of annuals is limited. There are low varieties of ageratum, bearded carnation, and verbena that can be planted under other plants. Bells placed in pots, cleoma, decorative tobacco with a pleasant smell are appropriate here.

From winter-hardy crops, a white garden of plants in tubs will be decorated with star magnolia and irga in April, and action in May. In June, fragrant jasmine or mock orange is added, and in August - horse chestnut.

Pink companions are annual crops: godetia, petunias, begonias, levkoi, summer phlox, bearded carnation, decorative tobacco and others.

Of the winter-hardy woody plants for growing in pots on the summer terrace, hydrangeas and roses are preferred. Spirea, weigela and small types of viburnum are also planted.

Fragrant terrace

Smells are hard to describe, so let's make a comparison. The aromas of cistus, rosemary, cypress and sage are described as tart or spicy. As pungent - the scent of eucalyptus. Peppermint scent is cool, lavender is fresh. The fragrance of roses and lilies is called floral. Jasmine scent - called exotic, sensual or heavy. In citrus fruits, each plant has its own specific aroma, incomparable with anything. The purest and clearest is the lemon.

On the terraces, scented varieties of lilies, white jasmine with a sweet aroma, fragrant geranium with countless shades of smell - from anise to lemon and lavender are used for smell. They are complemented by bergamot or lemon mint, lemon thyme, lemon balm or mountain savory. Chubushnik flowers smell so intense that they can cause headaches. Clary sage leaves begin to spread their scent after lightly touching them. Winter-hardy round-leaved mint with the smell of apple and pineapple or noble mint with the smell of ginger, peppermint with the smell of basil are used. This is just a part of the rich assortment.

From winter-hardy shrubs, fragrant species of viburnum, mahonia open spring. This is followed by broom, lilac, mock orange, goof, buddleya. And climbing plants such as fragrant honeysuckle. Each fragrant terrace should have a heady scent of hydrangeas. They are also grown in tubs.

Among the annual, summer-blooming plants with an intense smell, decorative tobacco, lobularia and levka are captivating. From herbaceous perennials, some varieties of krasodneva have fragrant flowers, some types of primroses - primroses and violets.

Shaded terrace

Herbaceous perennials are usually planted here - hosta, which blooms in the shade with white or purple flowers, and fuchsia, which has an abundance of varieties, winter-hardy ferns.

On the northern terraces, that is, those that are on the north side of the buildings, it is impossible to grow flower plants that cannot do without the sun. One thing remains - to grow plants with decorative leaves, for example, ferns. On the east and west side, the terrace is under partial sunlight - part of the day it is illuminated by the sun and part of the day is in the shade. In partial shade, a large number of beautifully flowering plants in tubs feel good.

Shady terraces should never look gloomy or cold. Light, white furniture or a light floor can bring light there, and pillows can be used for metal seats. Flower containers should be made of light-colored ceramics.

The positive qualities of the shady terrace are the beneficial effects of coolness, giving you the opportunity to take a break from the burning sun, and a soothing atmosphere.

On a semi-shaded terrace, astilbe trees with bright pink flowers, standard fuchsia trees with dark red flowers, coleus, pink hydrangea flowers, pyramidal box trees are grown. There are a number of other hardy woody plants to recommend. These are magonia Bailey, witch hazel, viburnum and irga. In summer, they are followed by shrubby horse chestnuts, spireas and weigels, and from climbing plants - honeysuckle.

When choosing companions for such a terrace from annual plants blooming in summer, stop at white and pink begonias and forget-me-not flowers. Variegated leaves go well with them, in which there is a white color, like a lamb.
