What lawn to choose for your estate

In French, the word gazon means turf, murava. The famous Russian specialist in ornamental plant growing F. F. Demur noted that nothing exalts the beauty of plants like a green carpet. It is necessary that the green of the lawn is not varied, or, at least, that it is composed of the most delicate and most suitable herbs. He emphasized that no matter how superbly a garden is formed, if lawns do not take up most of the space in it, it never produces the full effect.

The most beautiful, tidy gardens of those gardeners who managed to carve out a piece of land in front of the house under an even grass rug in a ceremonial place. The lawn not only creates an enchanting atmosphere, but also ties together all the elements of the site design - flower beds, alpine slides, curbs, paths, gazebos, etc.

In the ancient treatise "On Plants", written in the XIII century, it is said: "The sight enjoys nothing more than soft, thin, low grass." The beneficial effects of the green cover on humans were emphasized by many doctors of the Middle Ages. Modern medicine confirms that the calm natural color of greenery perfectly relieves stress, restores working capacity, and gives rest to tired eyes.

On large areas, the lawn is one of the main, and perhaps the main decorative element. But even on a small plot, with a rational layout, there is a place for it.

The lawn doesn't have to be big. Let it be just a cute, clean, weed-free, perfectly evenly mowed lawn near the recreation area.

Low-growing and resistant types of grass are chosen for the lawn. Lawns are appreciated primarily for their decorative function; they are used as a background, an aesthetic link between trees, flower beds, a gazebo, a fountain and other elements of the garden.

On the hottest day, the air temperature above the lawn is 3-5 degrees lower due to the evaporation of grasses, and the humidity is 10-15% higher. Since the lawn is constantly filled with growing grasses, it gives off oxygen with youthful energy. Dust near the grass is noticeably less. Therefore, it is natural that the presence of a lawn has a beneficial effect on people's health: fatigue decreases, lost energy is restored.

There are decorative lawns - parterre, Moorish (variegated) - ordinary and colored, walking, meadow, sports, roadside, and lovable. A lawn can be used to protect river banks from landslides and washout.

Depending on the purpose, lawns differ in grasses. Ideally, setting up a lawn starts with getting rid of weeds. They are removed before planning, usually in two steps. First, by chemical means, for example, roundup. Then, after 4-5 weeks, they destroy the grass that has grown from the weed seeds remaining in the ground. And only after these events are lawn grasses sown.

The best time for sowing lawn grasses is mid-August to mid-September. But spring sowing is also possible - from mid-April to mid-May. Sowing seeds is carried out in two directions. During sowing, complex mineral fertilizers are applied. Seeds and fertilizers are sprinkled with a 5–10 mm layer of earth or slightly buried with a rake, trampled down, moistened. When the grass grows up to a height of 10-15 cm, it is mowed, leaving the lawn height 5-6 cm. In the future, it is mowed once a month, leaving the grass 3-5 cm high. After mowing, the lawns are watered. Water should be done without waiting for the grass to lose its elasticity, tarnish or turn brown.

Gardeners tend to be attracted to decorative and walking lawns.

English lawn

The parterre lawn or English is considered an "aristocrat". This is the only type of lawn that is not walked on either in summer or in winter. It is the most beautiful - a front lawn for the presentation of the front viewpoints. Such a lawn is created solely for decorative purposes: perfectly flat, low-cut, without flaws, with a uniform pale green color. The area of the parterre lawn is larger than the total area of all objects located on it.

For parterre lawns, single-species crops are better than grass mixtures. In Europe, America and neighboring Finland, the decorative qualities of various varieties of meadow bluegrass are highly valued. It grows successfully in shaded areas on fertile, loose and moist soils, forms an ideal green carpet of thin delicate grass, resistant to mowing, cold and disease. Pasture ryegrass is growing at a record pace. In places with insufficient moisture, on sandy loam, sheep fescue is used, frost-resistant and drought-resistant. On loamy soils for a long-term lawn, meadow fescue and white bent grass, resistant to droughts and frosts, are used. Herbs are sown in pure form or mixtures are prepared from them, selecting certain species for specific conditions.

The lawn will look very original, on which you can place various retaining walls, curbs, garden lamps, ponds, alpine slides and much more. Various compositions from evergreens look especially impressive, especially various types of thuja, juniper and other conifers.

If it is necessary to decorate parterre lawns, the total area of flower beds should occupy no more than 20-30% of its area. Ensembles and mosaics should be low and solid.

Ordinary lawn

Ordinary lawn is the most popular, very functional and practical, much more economical than parterre lawns, although it also needs good-quality and timely care. It is inferior to the parterre lawn in decorativeness and does not need such careful maintenance.

It serves as a general green background. They are occupied by any open areas except shady places. A slight discrepancy in the density of the grass is allowed. They walk on it, but do not trample it. Therefore, he has stronger turf, tougher and more stubborn grass. For this lawn, it is recommended to use a mixture of several cereals - bluegrass and forest, sheep's fescue, multiflorous and annual ryegrass, common comb, comb-shaped wheatgrass and thin bent grass.

Often ends in failure to create a lawn coverage in shaded areas. Here rare and weak vegetation appears, strongly oppressed by the lack of light. In such places, you can put garden furniture, arrange games and picnics without the risk of spoiling the green stubble. She recovers quickly. An ordinary lawn is mowed in spring and autumn at a height of 6 cm.

Meadow lawn

The meadow lawn is an ordinary beautiful meadow. The grass is high there. Flowers are visible against the background of the green carpet. It turns out an almost natural natural glade. As a background for something, a meadow lawn is not used. It does not require frequent mowing; it is enough to cut the grass 2-3 times per season. You can run, play, sunbathe, and have picnics in this meadow. Red and white clover, blue and yellow alfalfa, timothy grass, tall ryegrass, rootless wheatgrass, cornflowers grow well here.

Moorish lawn is a kind of meadow. It is a flower meadow. The herbal mixture is made up of one part of cereals and two parts of seeds of flowering plants, mainly annuals with a height of 30-40 cm. Red and blue flax, poppy, cornflower, bells, escholzia and other plants are often used. This lawn is mowed once - after the flower seeds have fallen off.
