Through hardship to the stars
On the territory of the Kuzminki estate, located in the South-Eastern administrative district of the city of Moscow, from July 2 to September 10, the XI regional festival of flower beds and landscape architecture was held. Its theme is "Sports and Space", as well as the motto "From sports victories to space heights!" in 2011 they were not chosen by chance: they are dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first manned flight into space and the Year of Sports and Healthy Lifestyle.
As you might guess, each of these two areas of activity provides landscape designers with ample scope for imagination and translating it into reality. Therefore, in flower beds and landscape compositions (about 60 in total) one could meet Olympic rings, figurines of aliens, pictograms of various sports, wooden houses and hives, an Olympic bear, space satellites and rockets, a pedestal with three prizes and cups, an Olympic torch, running tracks, a football field with gates and wooden players, stars, models of the Sun, as well as the Earth, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and other planets, images of Yuri Gagarin, astronauts, a chessboard with figures, a basketball court made of flowers and decorative dumping football balls, small bodies of water, the "Parade of the Planets" maze, made of cuts from the trunk and flowering plants.
The names of the compositions were also very diverse: laconic "Football", "Planet of Sports", "Symbols of the Olympics", "Road to Victory", "Skier", "Olympic Hopes", "Past - Present - Future" - a dedication to the upcoming Winter Olympics 2014 years in Sochi, “Awards to the winners”, “Basketball”, “Always in the bull's eye”, “Start”, “Olympic flame” and others, vigorous - “We are together - we will win!”, “We believe in Russia, we we believe in ourselves, football is life, this is our game”,“Everyone needs skill, hardening, training”,“Be the first - be the best!”,“Forward to victory!”,“We are the pride of Russia”.
The titles of many compositions dedicated to space had a romantic mood: "Lunar Landscape", "Blue Distances", "Space Regatta", "Through Thorns to the Stars", "Our Space", "The Third Planet from the Sun", "Space Palette", "Rocket Takeoff", "Ice and Fire of Alpha Centauri", "Space - the Road without End", "Forward to the Stars", "First in Space", "Let's Go!" Astronomical and astrological terms were reflected in the names of other "cosmic" compositions: "Solar System", "Milky Way", "Parade of Planets", "Constellation of Cancer", "Constellation of Pisces", "Constellation of Libra", "Saturn", "Martian chronicles ". Some works included in their titles excerpts from songs or poems: “And we are flying in orbits, unbroken paths, space is stitched with meteorites …”, “The Earth is visible in the window”, “Fly to the sun and return home soon”, “There will be apple trees on Mars blossom","Rockets rush to distant worlds", "We have been surfing the cosmic distance for half a century."
As always, traditional, unpretentious and stable in urban conditions varietal annuals (or perennials grown in annual culture) dominated in flower beds and landscape compositions: marigolds (tagetes), petunias, cineraria, nasturtium, always blooming begonia, balsamines, coleus, ageratum, celosia, lobelia, salvia (sage) brilliant, gatsania.
Perennials were also included in some compositions: hosts, chrysanthemums, lilies, cannes, large-leaved hydrangea, junipers, thuja, young apple and birch trees. In addition to flowering and ornamental foliage plants, decorative chips and gravel dumps were widely used in the compositions, often painted in bright colors, less often expanded clay and blocks of glass, symbolizing ice.
Personally, we most of all remember the compositions "Ice and Fire of Alpha Centauri", "Forward to Victory", reminiscent of a huge birthday cake, "Through hardships to the stars", the labyrinth "Parade of the Planets", "Be the first - be the best!"
But the international exhibition of flower decoration and landscape design "Blossoming Planet", which we love, annually held on the territory of the All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC) this year, alas, did not take place …
