My alpine slide, or how I mastered the dump of the earth

According to the gardening plan, there is a fire reservoir behind our site. And so they dug it up, and at the edge of the site appeared a 10-meter dump of earth. I was horrified: so much work in the garden and in the beds, and then there was this mountain!

But the eyes are afraid, but the hands are doing, and we gradually began to clean up the earth, added it to the beds, used it for the blind area, for filling the pipe, for going to the site, we raised low places, and little by little two-thirds of the entire earthen mountain was removed. There was very little left, and then I decided to plant lupins on the dump of earth. When it blossomed, it worked out very well.

And then the thought struck me: shouldn't I make an alpine hill, since there are enough stones - and the work began to boil. I started to create with enthusiasm. In one summer, it was beyond my power to turn this dump of land into a blooming oasis, so I built it in parts for five years. The size of the slide is 3.5x2.5 meters and the height is 1.2 m. I dug the ground, dragged stones, collecting them all over the site. Large stones were used to build the foundation of the house, so I was left with medium-sized and small ones - everything went into business. I laid stones, made a retaining wall, took out clay, added earth, and planted flowers. I had to move the stones more than once, select them by size and shape, until something worked out.

The work is hard, but when the landscape picture begins to emerge, you get great pleasure. The first plants were various species of saxifrage, exceptional dicentra, forest ferns. Lupine has long flaunted as a dominant on the hill. The assortment of plants was not large, because everything happened in 1995, there were no plants in such a volume as now then, they were obtained from friends, friends, and I managed to buy something.

Every year the site was mastered more and more, and the slide also became more and more beautiful. Edelweiss, geychera, low daylilies, hosta, forest spruce, which is sheared under a ball, bergamo, yaskolka, various types of stonecrops, tenacious, astilbe, rejuvenated and many other plants, including conifers - Cossack juniper, Konica spruce, Mikey thuja - dwarf. On the hill, for the convenience of climbing and carrying out all the work, steps were made to the top, where forest pine, Japanese quince and creeping cotoneaster Damera grow. In five years, the foundation of the hill was created, the plants grew, small stones hid behind them. Then I decided to make a small alteration using large stones, they appeared in connection with the development of new pieces of our site.

And the work began to boil with renewed vigor. My husband, watching me build my slide, joked that I, apparently, had not played enough with stones in my childhood. However, after we won the Flora Price landscape competition in 2004, he took up the hill himself, setting up a few large stones with his son and making new larger steps. Every summer, an alpine slide requires care: weeding, replanting overgrown plants and planting new ones.

Over the years, trees have risen behind the hill, and a green fence has turned out, buildings have appeared to the right and left of it, and a lawn in front of it. The style of the slide, like the entire site, is kept close to nature. A few more years will pass, and, perhaps, you will want to redo something, but now it pleases us with its naturalness and beauty. In early spring, subulate phlox of different colors blooms, daffodils, tulips are dazzling somewhere, later saxifrages will release their delicate clouds on thin legs, then stonecrops will paint the ground between the stones, a rare mountain edelweiss will bloom - and so on until autumn. And when the first snow falls, evergreen conifers play the main role.

Every year I look forward to spring, which will bring a meeting with our garden, with our favorite plants, because they are alive and feel good about them. Treat with love and care - and they will thank you with their beautiful appearance and lush flowering.
