Gloxinia the most beautiful - a tuberous flowering plant

Under the sign of Taurus

Gloxinia
Gloxinia

The plants sponsored by the zodiac sign Taurus (April 21 - May 20) include Kalanchoe Blosfeld and Mangin, ampelous peperomias (climbing, large-leaved, creeping), decorative growing begonias (tuberous, multi-flowered, winter-flowered), primrose (primrose), Persian cyclamen, violet uzambar, gloxinia (sinningia) beautiful.

Gloxinias are an example of an excellent indoor plant that blooms profusely in rooms throughout the summer. The most popular types of gloxinia are called fine and hybrid. This tuberous plant (native to tropical Brazil) has many forms, differing in leaf size, color and type of flowers. Against the background of large (up to 18-20 cm long) green leaves, located on succulent petioles, the beauty of numerous large bell-shaped (funnel-shaped) velvety flowers of purple, blue, red, pink, white color, with a smooth or ruffled edge, is especially pronounced; there are also terry varieties.

In the parent species, the flowers (and not quite the correct shape) were drooping or characterized by a horizontal arrangement. By repeatedly crossing these species and selecting from the offspring of hybrids, breeders managed to breed many large-flowered varieties with upright (looking up) flowers.

Gloxinia blooms for a relatively long time (April - October) and abundantly (up to 50 pieces), and many flowers bloom at the same time.

Gloxinia is considered to be a difficult plant for home cultivation. The location is chosen with a bright diffused light. With a lack of light, the leaves lose color and change shape. But bright scorching rays of the sun are also dangerous for the plant. When water gets on them (especially cold) on such days, spots appear on the leaves. During the summer period, a moderately warm content (at least 18 ° C) and abundant watering with warm water is necessary, but waterlogging of the soil substrate is unacceptable. If the humidity around the plant is not maintained, the leaves may shrivel and the buds may not bloom. It is better to place the pot on a pallet with damp moss or pebbles and pour water from the pallet.

According to experienced flower growers, it is better to make the soil substrate from leafy and humus soil with sand (in a ratio of 4: 4: 1), adding a small amount of sphagnum and dry mullein. During flowering, regular (every 2-3 weeks) feeding with a solution of organic or mineral fertilizers is required.

After the plants finish flowering in the fall, their leaves naturally turn yellow and dry out, and the roots die off. After that, the pots with wintering tubers are transferred to a dark, cool place (no more than 10 … 12 ° C). This dormant period lasts about 4-5 months. They can also be kept indoors (away from the heating system batteries) under a layer of sand or overlaid with slightly moistened sphagnum moss. For safety net, resting tubers are periodically examined, for which they are removed from the soil.

In January, the pots with tubers are rearranged in a warm and bright place (preferably a southern exposure window), they begin to water moderately (preferably from a pallet by sucking in moisture with soil). After the appearance of the first shoots, watering is activated, preventing excess moisture in the soil so as not to cause rotting of the plant's underground system, which causes the plant to quickly die. During this period, you can carefully remove the tubers from the soil and divide them according to the number of awakened buds. The slices should be allowed to dry out a little, disinfected with ash, after which the pieces of tubers are planted each in a separate container with previously prepared soil.

In addition to the reproduction of gloxinia by young nodules or their pieces, amateur flower growers often resort to propagation by leaf cuttings. This is due to the fact that the leaves with short petioles root well. They are separated from the mother plant with a razor blade, the cut is slightly dried and planted in the sand, covered with glass on top to create high humidity. At a temperature of 20 … 25 ° C and the required humidity for rooting, it takes no more than 3-3.5 weeks. Usually, the rooting of leaves is carried out without any particular problems; but excess moisture in the soil is extremely harmful, since the leaf petiole can rot.

Blooming gloxinia will look great and will look the most contrasting if the pot with it is placed against the background of some climbing plants, for example, against the background of overgrown lashes of ivy-heder or golden scindapsus.
