Agrotechnology for growing large-fruited black thornless blackberries
Garden blackberries are highly prized for their fortified fruits. Its dense glossy berries are delicious and aromatic. And bushes during flowering and fruiting period decorate the garden.
Planting pits measuring 60 * 60 * 60 cm and at a distance of 2 m from each other prepared in the fall. The soil consisted of 1/3 of well-rotted humus, 1/3 of coarse river sand, 1/3 of the upper part of the fertile soil layer. He mixed all this thoroughly right in the pit and mulched it up with river sand by 5 cm.
Before planting, I prepared the cuttings for better rooting. Above the upper kidney at a height of 3 cm, I made a horizontal incision, sealed it with plasticine, above the lower one - at an angle of 45 degrees. With a sharpened knife, he carefully made four cuts in the bark of the cuttings, starting with the second bud and down to the very bottom, without cutting the buds themselves.
In the first year, by the fall, the cuttings took root and gave thornless shoots up to 3 m in length. The first harvest ripened next year in mid-August. On the brush there were from 8 to 20 large berries of a very sweet, slightly sour taste. On the brushes of a 5-year-old plant there are up to 148 berries the size of an average plum! Inflorescences reach 80 - 100 cm in length!
Water procedures
Every day, at least 3 times a day, he abundantly watered young seedlings. Adult plants - in two days, 20 - 30 liters of water under the bush. In the morning after watering, I loosened the soil.
Nutritional ration
I make three additional feeding during the season. I spend the first at the time of flowering, the second in early August, and the third in September. I bring 1 bucket of mullein to the bush. I dilute it with water 1: 8, insist on the sun for at least a week, stirring it repeatedly throughout the day.
After feeding, be sure to water the blackberries abundantly, adding a 0.5 liter jar of wood ash.
You cannot use the ashes of coniferous trees. It is poison for the root system of plants
Green lectern
The first two to three years, while the blackberry is still weak, it is necessary to leave up to 3 young shoots, the rest must be removed. In adult bushes, you can leave 5 - 7 shoots.
Ability to share
The ends of young shoots touching the ground can easily root themselves. From August to October, I water them thoroughly by sprinkling - this facilitates survival. One bush gives several dozen daughter shoots. In the spring I cut them off, and tie the main shoots to a trellis up to 2 m high. For
wintering
In the fall, I untie the shoots from the trellis, lay them on the ground and cover them - I put boards on them. To press it more tightly to the ground, I put logs on the boards. From above, carefully, so that there are no cracks, I cover it with reeds. I believe that this is the best covering material for blackberries. In the spring, as soon as the snow melts, I remove and burn it. I put ashes of reeds under bushes - this is an additional source of food.
I will reveal one more secret. Before hiding the blackberries for the winter, I put one plastic sugar bag filled with dry leaves. They protect the root system of the plant well from freezing during winters with little snow, and in spring, when rotting, an excellent fertilizer is obtained.
Eventually …
One blackberry bush yields 2.5 buckets of large berries the size of a small plum. They make delicious, aromatic jam and wonderful compote. The plants do not have any pests, for all the years they have not been sick with anything.
