Pigmy currant
There is no need to convince readers that black currant is one of the most popular berry crops in Russian gardens. And this is no coincidence. The aromatic berries of this culture have a very rich chemical composition. The fruits of black currant are especially appreciated for their high content of vitamin C.
Yielding in this indicator only to rosehips and actinidia, this currant is 4-5 times higher than strawberries and citrus fruits, 8-10 times - gooseberries and raspberries, 15-20 times - apples, cherries and plums, 30-50 times - pear … Doctors say that it is enough to eat 12-20 black currant berries to provide the body's daily need for this vitamin. In addition, it is rich in vitamins A, B, E, P.
Over 25 years of gardening, more than 30 varieties of black currant have visited my collection. In this short article I would like to share some experience, talk about the positive and negative properties of certain varieties of currant when growing them in Karelia. I think that they are manifested in a similar way throughout the North-West of Russia, since our climatic conditions are similar, maybe somewhere a little warmer, and somewhere cooler.

Mermaid currant
I remember that in the 90s, a popular variety of black currant - Yadrenaya became widespread in gardens. Yes, her berries are large, super-large, and some are even larger than cherries. However, this is the only positive quality of this variety. And his brush is heterogeneous: the upper berries are like cherries, and the lower ones are slightly larger than a poppy seed. And I would rate the taste no higher than a C grade. But these are not the worst qualities of the Yadreny variety.
I did not particularly notice pests on its bushes, but diseases are the scourge of this currant. Perhaps, when grown in other regions, this variety is not as susceptible to diseases as ours. However, here, in Karelia, for this reason I was forced to give up growing Yadrenaya. First of all, this variety is very susceptible to powdery mildew. Many varieties of black currant are more or less susceptible to this disease, but Yadrenaya showed signs of this disease even in the driest seasons. To a slightly lesser extent affected by powdery mildew varieties Valovaya, Sokrovische, Dove Seedling, Dikovinka, Selechenskaya, Plotnokistnaya, Sofya.
But the varieties of black currant are resistant to powdery milde: Belorusskaya sweet, Katyusha, Trilena, Delicates, Sibylla, Pigmey, Dashkovskaya, Rusalka, Globus. The Pamyat Shukshina variety and the Swedish Ojebin variety are practically not susceptible to powdery mildew disease.
Of the pests of black currant in my garden, I noticed only currant bud mites, aphids and spider mites. Particularly annoying is the kidney mite, which damages the buds of plants, such buds no longer develop and subsequently dry out. But this is not so bad. The trouble is that the kidney mite is a carrier of such a dangerous viral disease as terry. This disease first affects the leaf apparatus of the currant, and then the whole plant. Sick plants change outwardly, thicken excessively and cease to bear fruit. Of the varieties I grow, varieties are more affected by the kidney mite: Sofya, Yadrenaya, Veloy, Dikovinka.

Sibilla currant
Black currant berries vary greatly in taste. I don't know if this is natural or not, but, as a rule, the fruits of large-fruited varieties are less tasty than the fruits of other varieties. This primarily applies to varieties: Yadrenaya, Valovaya, Sokrovische, Veloy. Berries of black currant varieties are delicious: Globus, Rusalka, Dashkovskaya, Sibylla, Pygmy, Trilena, Grape, Katyusha. But the most delicious fruits in my garden are given by the varieties: Belorusskaya Sweet and Delikates.
I would also like to dwell on the wonderful variety of Pygmy. I would recommend it to gardeners who prefer to grow large-fruited varieties in their garden. In size, its berries are commensurate with the berries of the Yadrenaya variety. But on the other hand, the fruits in the brush are practically one-dimensional, round in shape, with a sweet dessert taste. The variety is of medium ripening. The bush of this variety is medium-sized, and, which is very important, slightly spreading. The variety is resistant to powdery mildew, slightly affected by anthracnose, practically not affected by pests.
Get this wonderful variety and you will not regret your choice.

Black Currant Pruning. Diseases Of Black Currant
All pruning is best done in spring or at the very beginning of summer, but not in August or early September, because with early autumn pruning, young shoots will grow at the ends of the branches, which will die in winter. With late autumn pruning in November, frostbite of wood may occur through the wounds. And in fact, and in another case, the ends of the branches will have to be cut again next spring
