I really love clematis

I really love clematis. I managed to acquire the first plant of this species at a time when they were still very rare. I saw a photo in some magazine, and it was almost twenty years ago, and I really wanted the same miracle in my garden.

The chance brought me together with the florist Tatyana Leonidovna, who already had this fabulous flower, and as a result, I also became the happy owner of a beautiful blue clematis. I planted it in a hole well filled with humus, ash, mineral fertilizers, and the flower really liked it.

Clematis began to grow well, and in the second year the first flowers appeared, and in the third year there were even more of them - beautiful, large and bright. I felt like the owner of a real treasure, as my clematis was liked by all, without exception, guests of the garden. Alas, then I did not yet know how to properly cultivate this plant, and therefore I paid for the fifth year, which turned out to be very wet. The plant died due to the fact that it was planted without drainage, here is my flower and soaked. After that, I had to study special literature, get acquainted with the rules for planting clematis.

Planting clematis

I learned that clematis are planted in a permanent place in spring and autumn. When planting in spring, the main thing is not to be late with the dates, because clematis begins the growing season early. And if you are late, the life cycle of the plant may be disrupted.

As a result, it will be difficult to take root. If planted in autumn, the survival rate of clematis is higher, but here it is important that it has time to take root well before frost. Therefore, the planting dates are approximately the following: in spring it is the end of April - beginning of May, until the buds started to grow, but only began to swell.

If you are going to plant clematis in the fall, then you need to do this between late August and early October. During this time, he must take root in a new place before the onset of frost. Before the cold weather, the planting site must be insulated for the winter with a layer of dry fallen leaves, and on top of them, cover with lutrasil or other covering material.

Planting holes for clematis are recommended to be made large: about 70x70x70 cm.

In low areas and with a close occurrence of groundwater, it is imperative to do drainage: dig a hole, pour expanded clay, crushed stone, broken brick or pebbles on the bottom, which are scattered everywhere, to a height of 20-25 centimeters and cover with lutrasil, i.e. separate the volume that is between the stones from falling asleep with earth. Alternatively, lay the pieces of the perforated drainage pipe on the bottom and also lay the boundary between the volume that will collect water and the nutrient soil, which will then be laid in the pit.

At first I had no idea to put lutrasil or at least an ordinary piece of cloth on the stones. As a result, the earth woke up between the drainage parts, and the remaining volume could already accommodate less water. And then I do everything according to the classical scheme: I bring in the soil, taken out of the hole and mixed with humus, ash (it is definitely needed, because clematis do not like acidic soil), full of mineral fertilizer. In the literature, it is recommended to add half a bucket of humus, a glass of ash and a tablespoon of mineral fertilizer, but I think that the amount of additives needs to be adjusted depending on the fertility and acidity of the soil. I usually add horse manure as well (I place it at a distance of 10-15 cm from the roots).

The root collar in young plants is buried by 5-10 cm, in older plants - by 10-12 cm. This will protect it from freezing in winter and overheating in summer, and will contribute to the formation of new shoots. The distance between the plants is made within 1-1.5 m. After planting, clematis is abundantly watered and mulched.

Clematis are very light-requiring, but they do not tolerate overheating of the root system. That is why they grow in me surrounded by phlox or lilies, whose leaves and stems obscure the roots of clematis from bright sunlight.

Fame, fashion and demand for a certain flower often comes spontaneously and unpredictably, but the popularity of clematis is understandable: it quickly won the love of many people because of its beauty, functionality, and enormous species diversity.

This flower made friends with many previously unfamiliar people even before the era of the Internet, as the excitement of creating a collection of different species appeared - at first, different colors, different sizes … And there is no limit to this, because breeders create more and more new varieties.

For example, I received a white beauty of the Lady Owen variety from a very good woman along with tiger lilies, and I still cannot transplant them separately, since they are intertwined with roots very tightly. Also clematis "are friends" with phlox. For me, they have been growing together for many years, on the same bed, and phloxes cover the roots of clematis from overheating. The main thing here is to care for the plants so that everyone has enough food.

The earliest white beauty of the Ballerina variety blooms in June - it has simple, semi-double and double flowers up to 15 centimeters in diameter. Soon, yellow bells of Tangut clematis appear, after which, with a short interval, the clematis variety. Fragrant cloud - the plant is all strewn with small white flowers, it really is like a cloud, the foliage is almost invisible. Then the small-flowered clematis prince blooms, followed by an elen hybrid, later - the Ville de Lyon varieties of the Viticella group, Nadezhda, Andre Leroy … I also have a pale pale pink clematis in my garden, which burns out to white during flowering, but I do not I know his correct name (I bought it as a red Pobeda variety).

Last season, Lady Owen and President lagged behind with flowering, apparently due to thickening, I have not transplanted them for a long time, and phloxes there have grown strongly, apparently taking some of the food.

The beauty of clematis is in their variety. For low fences, absolutely unpretentious Tangut fences are suitable, which must be planted correctly, immediately tied to a support and directed the branches in the required direction. For the winter, this type of clematis does not need to be covered, and in the spring, when the buds have blossomed, you should only cut off the dry branches.

You can't do without support

Plants of clematis varieties Aromatic cloud a little more than a meter high, they look amazing on a mesh fence. It is a support for flowers, which greatly decorate the net with their white fragrant cloud.

If you need to quickly green a three-meter fence - Clematis prince is at your service, it has powerful, fast-growing stems with drooping half-open bells.

For all the years of growing clematis, we have tried several types of supports: lattices, twine … We also tried a fence net rolled into a tube.

It turned out that this is very suitable for clematis: it is convenient for the leaves to cling to the cells, and the flowers coquettishly peek out of the lattice in all directions, a kind of colorful column is obtained, however, it must be fixed vertically very well. It turned out very practical: we put two walls of a plastic fence mesh 2.5 meters high and 5 meters long at right angles and high clematis of different colors twist along them, and on the third side there is a temporary hut. And the result is a cozy resting corner with a table and benches, sheltered from the winds and from the sun.

The advantage of such a support is also that for the winter we simply remove the net from the supports and put it directly on the garden bed along with the flowers that are on the net. It turns out that the net itself and old flowers become a covering material. In the spring, we again raise the net along with the flowers and fix it in an upright position. The look, of course, turns out to be sad - the leaves and branches are withered, gray.

You can, of course, immediately shake them off with a broom or a mop and wait for the kidneys to come to life. It depends on the weather. As soon as it becomes clear which buds have decided to please us with their flowering this year, we cut the branches to living tissue and clean the net of dry branches. True, this is a painstaking task, but the result obtained is worth the time. They fed us, praised our flowers, and they promise us even more joy than last year, which means life is good!
