So, we planted a garden, placed fruit trees to our liking, planted berry bushes. It would seem that everything suits us, but there is always this "but" … There is a lot of free space left between the plants, and in our time, empty land is an unacceptable luxury.

And we begin to think, rack our brains, deciding how to fill this space, and even so that we would benefit, and the plants from this forced for them "neighborhood" did not suffer too much.

It is well known that while the plants are young - this applies to both fruit trees and berry bushes, the first few years after their planting (usually the period from the second to the tenth year of life) they use a rather insignificant part of the area allotted to them. This is the most appropriate time to use the aisles for various crops, until the plants have grown and shaded this area.

But not all crops do well under the canopy of even small plants. In order not to be mistaken with their choice, it is necessary to take into account a number of very important factors. Gardeners should remember that the root system of fruit trees, and shrubs too, grows much more actively in width than their crown grows. Often, the roots of fruit trees, which are only five to six years old, located not so far from each other, begin to intertwine.

In such row spacings, often small in area, it is best to grow those crops that by their nature are not very demanding on nutrients, but not always (they do not exist), namely during the period when fruit plants need them most. Typically, such a "consumer" season for fruit and berry crops falls on the first half of the summer, then the outflow of nutrients and moisture from the soil is most significant. This is due to the fact that during this period, plants are actively developing the growth of shoots, leaves, setting and growth of fruits.

Therefore, if we know this, then we will choose for growing in the aisles of the garden those crops that consume a significant amount of water and nutrients at a later date, namely, in the second half of summer. There are many such crops, but vegetable crops and potatoes are considered the most suitable in this regard; these crops can be cultivated in gardens and at the same time count on good yields.

In addition to vegetables and potatoes, the aisles of the garden can also be occupied with legumes. Peas, beans, beans grow well. Of course, these crops also consume a large amount of water, especially in the early period, but at the same time they enrich the soil with nitrogen, which is very necessary for plants, which is assimilated from the air thanks to bacteria developing in special nodules placed on the roots of these plants. Even if you are not impressed with their harvest, legumes can be embedded in the soil to enrich it.

In a young garden, or in a garden where the aisles are significant, it is possible to grow garden strawberries, but when cultivating it, it is imperative to carry out a thorough control of the larvae of May beetles. The disadvantage of "tinning" the garden with strawberries is that treatments in the form of spraying with poisons, which are obligatory for the garden, are often carried out during the period when the strawberries are blooming or even when fruits appear on them.

This is unpleasant, but the problem can be solved if the planting area is small - in this case, strawberry plants can be covered with plastic wrap, plain paper, or some other material. By the way, they also do the same with vegetable crops or herbs cultivated in the aisles.

A big disadvantage of the neighborhood of vegetable and fruit crops is the invasion of mice, which raid the garden in search of food. Careless gardeners who leave plant residues on the territory in the form of leaves, tops, twigs, shoots, pulled out weeds, usually have a particularly large number of mice in the garden. They can seriously harm plants, gnawing the bark of trees, young apple and pear trees can even die from such vandalism. In addition to cleaning plant residues, it is also necessary to carry out the simplest measures against the accumulation of mice - to lay out poisoned baits, to set up traps.

But this is in the garden, where the aisles among fruit plants are often large, but the aisles of berry bushes are small, and the crops themselves grow faster. Therefore, in areas occupied by gooseberries, currants, raspberries and a number of other similar crops, it is possible to grow only such vegetable crops as radishes, onions, garlic and carrots, and only in the first three years of plant life.

It should be remembered that inter-row crops are not much different from weeds, they are the same competitors for nutrition, and the influence they have on fruit plants cannot be positive. Therefore, good yields of fruits and vegetables are possible only if high agricultural technology is observed and when a sufficient amount of irrigation water is supplied to the soil.

In addition to the above method of "filling" the empty space between plants, there are several more. For example, some gardeners use only empty land (black fallow), but this is ugly, and it also requires a lot of care, one weed control is worth a lot. Others plant lawn, but lawn grass can consume nutrients in excess of that of fruit crops.

In a number of countries, sowing of grasses is used for tinning row spacings, for example, the oriental goat's rue is a legume that forms only an aboveground mass, which can then be embedded in the soil, improving its structure. Covering row spacings with non-woven materials is also used, but this is quite an expensive pleasure, and not always effective. By the way, such a site does not look much better than a site under black steam.

In general, it is up to you to decide what to occupy the empty space!
