Video: Derain - Species Used In Landscape Design
The use of trees for decorating gardens
You, of course, had to drive or walk on country roads. Undoubtedly, at the end of summer, you saw bushes as tall as a man, strewn with inedible berries. This is derain. It is unpretentious, gives abundant growth and therefore grows into large groups. It can be found along roads and rivers. He likes damp, sunny or slightly shaded places.
It grows in many places in our country and abroad - in Siberia, the Far East, Mongolia, China, Japan and Europe. Various types of deer grow in North America. In general, there are about 50 species of turf in nature. They are all deciduous, sometimes evergreen shrubs or small trees. Derain are classified into two groups. Some are plants with bright bark that decorate the garden in winter. Some varieties of this group have variegated leaves. To maintain the decorative shape of the bushes, regular pruning is necessary.

Another group is made up of shrubs with beautiful flowers or leaves that change color by autumn. Derain has been cultivated for almost 400 years. It is valued primarily for its bright red to dark purple color of the bark of young shoots. It is most expressive when there is no foliage on the bushes yet or it has already fallen, that is, usually from the end of November until the appearance of new leaves in mid-May. …
Winter and early spring are a rather sad and boring time, and bright groups of deren are especially colorful against the background of trees with dark needles. Rare sun rays in winter emphasize the brightness of the color of the bark. Most types of deren do not differ in their originality. But their habitus, the majesty of the spreading of bushes with drooping shoots, the abundance of white, bluish or black fruits, the decorative color of the leaves of garden forms deserve the attention of gardeners. Let's get acquainted with some interesting varieties, zoned in our climatic conditions, with the quirkiness of their forms and the bark of an unusual color.
Derain is white. His homeland is Siberia, Manchuria and Korea. This is an outstanding selection from the Tatar tree, the most widespread in nature. Grows around the cities of Russia, Holland and northern Europe. Derain white is known all over the world as a tree or a beautiful ornamental shrub. In summer it has yellow flowers. With rich, coral red or deep purple delicate branches that bend almost to the ground, this variety is excellent in the winter garden, where they create a striking contrast between snow and evergreen perennials.
Its leaves, like most tree trees, are arranged oppositely on the petioles, they are whole-edged, 10 cm long and 3-6 cm wide. In summer they are variegated and green, and bluish-white on the underside. In autumn, the leaves turn reddish. During flowering, like most other trees, this species is not very decorative: the flowers are small with four creamy white petals, but the flowers are numerous and collected in corymbose inflorescences. Flowering occurs in the second half of summer. The fruits are white or pale blue drupes that ripen in August. They are medium-sized, up to 6 mm in diameter. In autumn, the bush is very attractive. Known decorative forms of white turf:
- silvery-bordered with a creamy-white border;
- Shpet - leaves with a wide yellow edge;
- Siberian - undersized form with bright red shoots;
- Kesselringa - purple-black shoots.
They form excellent bright spots in any garden setting. The height of the bushes is mainly from 1.2 to 3 m, the width is 1.8-2.5 m. These species grow well in damp ground and in full sunlight. Mandatory pruning is done in early spring to accelerate the growth of young, delicate branches and enhance the brightness and color of the stems.
Nowadays, two decorative forms with original foliage coloration during the entire growing season are widely used in landscaping: white silvery-edged turf with contrasting fringing of leaves and white Shpeta turf with a very bright orange color of almost the entire leaf blade. The decorative color of foliage is best shown in the sun. Both of these forms of white turf grow to form a large, brightly colored shrub that contrasts with the rest of the plantings, beautifying the site. The size and shape of the bushes are maintained by regularly trimming the branches.

Proliferous dogwood (Cornus stolonifera). His homeland is North America. It is also widespread in our country. Its shoots, in contact with the ground, root their tops. This turf has two forms - with a bright red and bright lemon-yellow color of the bark. Both these forms are elegant and look unusually beautiful as a bright contrasting spot on the site in early spring and late autumn.
Derain blood red(svidina, cornus sanguinia). It grows in the Caucasus. Small white flowers are collected in corymbose inflorescences. Blossom simultaneously with dark green leaves. The leaves are pubescent underneath with long curly hairs. Flowering occurs a little later than the other species described above. Its fruits are black spherical drupes, 6-7 mm in size, they ripen in August - September. Young shoots are green at first. By autumn, the leaves turn a krall-red or purple color, hence the name of the plant itself. The bright red bark creates a dramatic color scheme in the winter landscape. The wood of the blood-red turf is very durable, hard. This plant is often found here and is used for decorative purposes. Svidina grows up to 3 m tall. She is as unpretentious as all deren. It grows in any soil.Baskets are woven from its thin and flexible branches and hoops for barrels are made. Svidina grows naturally in Europe - from Scandinavia to the Balkan Peninsula.
Common Derain (male, common dogwood, cornus). It grows in Central and Southern Europe, as well as in Western Asia - on rocky areas, on sunny slopes and in light forests in the Caucasus, Crimea, Transcaucasia.
It is a large leafy shrub, reaching 4.5 m in height, and up to 8 m in the south. Its wood is very hard and heavy. Hence, perhaps, the Latin name for derenov is "kornus", which means "horn". Young branches of this deren are green, yellow flowers in dense umbrellas are supported by four bracts, bloom until leaves appear. This is the earliest flowering shrub in our climatic conditions. Besides, he is a wonderful honey plant. Long before the leaves appear, it is covered with a light haze of pale yellow flowers, collected in 15-25 pieces in a bunch. At the end of September - in October, juicy fleshy sour fruits ripen - drupes 1-3 cm long, having a color from pale yellow to dark coral red. The plant usually has several trunks. They are curved and ribbed.
Ripe fruits have a pleasant sweetish-sour taste. The pulp of the fruit is rich in vitamins. The fruits are harvested for making preserves and marmalades. Dogwood has very strong wood. Common Derain (dogwood) can grow and bear fruit in our conditions, if the autumn is warm. It is a durable plant that can live up to 250 years. Like all other derens, he is not picky about the soil, although he prefers lands rich in lime. It grows both in the sun and in light shade, gives growth and consolidates slopes well. Propagated by root shoots and layering.
Derain Chinese "wolf eyes". An amazingly variegated bush that easily resists the intense summer heat. Rich large creamy flowers with a green eye center. It blooms in early spring and early summer. It has bright red fruits. In autumn, the leaves turn pinkish-red, and in winter, a beautiful bright bark. Stunning multicolored leaves with a strong ivory color. It grows up to 3 m in height within 5-7 years. Prefers acidic, moist, well-draining soil in full sun and shade.
Blooming Derain (Florida Rubra). This small tree or shrub is native to North America. Differs in abundant snow-white flowering. The plant has spherical heads of small flowers, surrounded by four large - from 4 to 5 cm white or pinkish bracts. They are surrounded by decorative variegated, yellow, green and red leaves, which become most expressive closer to autumn. And finally, accompanied by bright red leaves, red berries appear. Prefers well-drained soil, full sun or partial shade. Grows up to 6-7 m tall.
Derain is also found here, mainly along the coast of the Gulf of Finland and on its islands. This is a multi-year shrub with a woody creeping stem underground or hidden in moss. He belongs to the Kizilov family. The above-ground stem is herbaceous; it dies off annually in winter, and grows back in spring. The height of the stems is from 6 to 25 cm. In the lower part, the stem is sometimes reddish. Light green sessile leaves are evenly distributed along the stem. Blooms in late May - early June. The petals are purple-black 1.5-2 mm long. This turf grows in light damp forests, especially birch, and in thickets of bushes. It can be found in low meadows and on the outskirts of peat bogs, in groups or sometimes in whole thickets.
Derain Milky Way. Derain is of Chinese origin. Its flowers look like large stars. A tree in an adult state reaches a height of 6-9 m and has the same crown width. In the south, it is interesting all year round. Blooms in early summer. Forms edible red berries from August to October. In the north, the berries do not ripen. Red-orange colors in autumn and rough two-tone bark in winter are widely used in garden design. Derain is resistant to disease and has practically no enemies. He requires full sunlight or light shade, fertile well-drained soil.
The use of trees in the landscape. The unpretentiousness of all tree trees to the soil, the ability to grow both in the sun and in the shade, resistance to unfavorable environmental factors, the possibility of forming a beautiful fence from them make these shrubs indispensable in landscaping a personal plot. There is always a place for planting in a sunny place one or two deren bushes with bright, variegated foliage and bright red or lemon-yellow bark. A beautiful combination with the flowering of deren, especially the Alba or Florida species, can divide your garden into pieces or turn into a decorative screen. Plant it in the shade of a house, to cover a toilet, barn, outbuildings, etc.
