Queen of all flowers, queen of any garden, queen of the soul - Rose - just like that - with a capital letter. A completely unfair definition stuck behind her - capricious, demanding, unreliable in cultivation. I strongly disagree with this.

Whoever grows roses and does everything with his own hands, without hired helpers - workers and gardeners, I think, will agree with me. After all, a person who loves the land will not use the services of a hired worker to plant something and get the desired result.

Before planting this queen in your garden, you need to suffer for her, endure this idea in your soul, see her future in your garden, and only after that start preparing the planting holes in the fall, so that in the spring you will plant a rose with love and tenderness on the lawful a place.

When I plan to add a piece to my collection in the spring, I carefully prepare a place for it in the fall. Since there is good fertile black soil in my garden, the thickness of which reaches about a meter, for the planting pit I mix the rotted manure with sand and earth, add phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, pour it all into the prepared pit, add ash on top and cover it with humus again. In this form, I leave the prepared place until spring.

With the arrival of warmth, as soon as the weather permits, I proceed to planting the future beauty. From the planting pit I dig the soil prepared in the fall into a basin or bucket, loosen the bottom of the pit, add rotted manure again, add lake sand brought from Lake Peipsi, mix everything again, sprinkle it on top with soil prepared the previous fall.

If I grew this rose at home in a pot before planting, then I plant it with an earthen clod, pouring in the earth so that the root collar is a little buried, and if it is a climbing rose, then even deeper.

If a new rose with an open root system (sometimes it happens), then I put a mound in the planting hole. I cut her roots, but I don't shorten them much, as they recommend - up to 25-30 cm, I'm sorry for the plant. I dip the seedling into a prepared solution of "Gummi" or "Gumistar", adding a little succinic acid there, and leave it there for about 20 hours. At the same time, I try to place in this solution not only the roots, but also the root collar and even part of the shoots.

The next day I start landing. At the same time, I carefully straighten all the roots, carefully pour in the nutrient soil from the pelvis, prepared since the fall. Having filled up the planting hole, I water the seedling very slowly and carefully, I wait for a long time for the water to gradually seep to the very bottom of the hole. Then I sprinkle ash on the trunk circle, and on top I mulch with rotted manure, I sprinkle it.

And then I watch a new rose every day, watch its development, whether it has enough of those nutrients that were laid during planting. But usually, after such preparation and careful planting, my queen feels very good and is ready to respond with lush flowering to the care.

Two weeks later, I unpack the seedling, make a hole around it for watering. I don't think that such a landing technology can be a burden to someone or unacceptable. This is the first argument against lamenting the rose's capriciousness.

When there are four true leaves on the growing shoots of a newly planted rose and a fifth appears, I pinch the shoot behind it for better bushiness and bush formation.

If you really want to make sure that the declared variety is consistent (recently you can often buy a completely different one), then I leave one bud on the plant, pluck the rest so as not to weaken it prematurely. Every day I watch him, how he develops, evaluate - whether it will be a tall "glass" or a cup-shaped flower. I watch the petals start to unfold, evaluate their color, terry, aroma, resistance to rain.

When I saw and appreciated all this, I cut a flower with two real leaves. And now let my beauty show herself in the second wave of flowering. I want to note that when growing roses, you need to have patience, the ability to wait. And the expectation of a miracle, created by your own hands, can it be attributed to the capriciousness of the rose?

Growing roses from cuttings

In my garden, not only roses bought in a store or in a nursery, but also those grown by me from cuttings are pleasing to the eye. By the way, this is also a very exciting activity. I have grown from cuttings park roses, hybrid tea, climbing. Now you will never think that this or that lush bush was once a small segment of a shoot with three buds. These roses feel good and bloom no worse than grafted ones.

I have already told the readers of the magazine about the wonders of one of them (“The soul rests there” - “Flora Price” №6 - 2009). The well-known rose of the New Downe variety blooms in me with its inherent pink and at the same time red color. Moreover, the aroma of red flowers is much stronger than pink. Experienced growers advised me to cut the red part of the rose, claiming that perhaps some new variety was born. I listened to their advice and now I am growing a stem from a shoot that blooms in red.

Cuttings can be rooted from late June to August 20. I mostly do this in a greenhouse. I take the cuttings with three buds, make the lower cut oblique, under the kidney, and the upper cut straight above the kidney at a distance of 0.5 cm.

I remove the bottom sheet completely, leave the petiole, shorten the two remaining leaves. I take the earth from a plot with roses (I have enough of it there), mix it with lake sand, pour 3 cm of sand on top, water it gently around the edges so as not to wash out the sand in a pot standing in a pan with water.

I put the prepared cutting 1 cm in water for moistening, then I put it in a bag with root. As much as it sticks, I leave so much. With a clean pencil or stick, I make a depression about 2 cm in the sand and put the handle there with a slight slope, squeeze it with sand and tamp it. It is very important that the cutting is firmly seated in the sand and does not touch the ground.

I put the pot in a bag, spray it and carry it to the greenhouse on the board assigned to it. Tomatoes shade cuttings with their tops, protect from the bright sun. While rooting is in progress, I spray the cuttings daily, slightly air them. And to see that the roots have appeared, I always plant the cuttings in transparent cups.

When the roots appear, and it happens after 3-4 weeks, I begin to gently feed the tender seedling. I use a very weak solution of "Uniflor-growth" fertilizer. It is dominated by nitrogen, and there are all trace elements, which accelerates development. Gradually I accustom the future queen to the open air, leaving it in the greenhouse, because there is the best climate for her, there is the necessary humidity. By the fall, a small bush grows.

Now it is time to think about his tomorrow. I dig a trench in the greenhouse, I reinforce the long walls with boards, lay the film, pour sawdust.

I put cups with cuttings right on the sawdust, put chrysanthemum bushes there, pour sawdust with a hefty mound, put spunbond on the sawdust, which I cover with earth and maple leaves on top. So the seedlings hibernate. Of course, you have to tinker with them, but they are not even "teenagers" yet, but "babies" who need to be nursed for another year.
