Several decades ago, gardeners interested in sea buckthorn transferred wild plants to their plots. Since the thirties of the XX century, Academician M. A. Lisavenko and other breeders of Russia bred a number of high-yielding varieties of sea buckthorn, distinguished by large-size fruits, excellent taste and medicinal qualities of fruits.

Recently, sea buckthorn has turned from a little-known Siberian berry plant into the most popular garden culture, the range of which includes more than 120 items. The most common varieties are described below.

A golden ear

A medium sized bush with a compressed and compact crown, brown bark and short branches. There are few thorns: each branch has only 3-4 thorns. Leaves are medium, slightly curled inward, dark green above, silvery below. The berries are medium, oval, light orange, moderately sour, ripen in early September. The average yield per bush is 13 kg, the maximum is 28 kg.

Zyryanka

A tree-like shrub of medium height. The crown is round, the branches are gray-brown, the shoots are thin, at the top with a hard thorn. Leaves are medium-sized, grayish-green, convex. The berries are large - 0.7-0.8 g, cylindrical, yellow-orange, sour-sweet taste with aroma. Peduncles 6-7 mm long, the separation is almost dry. Ripening period is medium early, productivity - 5-13 kg per bush. Winter hardiness is above average.

Vitamin

A vigorous shrub or tree with a pyramidal, narrow, compressed crown and thick branches. The bark is brown, there are few thorns. The leaves are large, slightly curled inward, light green. The berries are large, round, orange, sweet and sour, ripen at the end of August. The berries are large - 0.7-0.8 g, cylindrical, slightly narrowed to the top, shiny, light orange, pleasant sweet and sour taste, with aroma. The separation of berries is easy, semi-dry. Ripening period is medium early. Productivity 3-17 kg per plant. Average winter hardiness.

Chuiskaya

A tree-like shrub with a rounded, sparse, spreading crown. The bark of the skeletal branches is grayish-dark brown. Shoots are greenish-brown, densely covered with light gray lenticels, ending in a soft thorn. The leaves are large, concave, dark green with a silvery tint. The berries are large - 0.7-0.8 g, elongated-oval, light orange with small raspberry spots at the stalk, sweet and sour dessert taste. Semi-dry separation of berries. Ripens early. Shcherbinka

A bush of medium height. Annual shoots are long, of medium thickness, without thorns. The berries are large, cylindrical, brownish-orange with red spots, with a dense skin and pleasant aromatic pulp, ripen in early September. The average yield per bush is 10 kg. Along with the advantages of the named varieties, it should be noted that all of them are of Siberian origin, obtained in a sharply continental climate, therefore, in the conditions of the European part of Russia with unstable winters and frequent alternating thaws and frosts, they often suffer from freezing of buds and fruit-bearing branches. In recent years, breeders have obtained new varieties for the climatic conditions of the middle zone, the Non-Black Earth Zone and the North-West of Russia, which have already been tested here and are recommended as the best for these regions. These include varieties Botanicheskaya, Botanicheskaya amateur,Pleasing, Gift to the Garden and Trofimovskaya.
