The fact is that constant weather surprises force us to be especially careful about caring for our plants, selecting species and varieties, and most importantly, planning and arranging our sites. No, I do not mean various landscape techniques, it will be about something else.

Everyone knows that we live in an area of risky farming, which means that the cultivated plants on our plots are forced to exist under stressful conditions, and we must somehow mitigate this stress if we want to get a decent harvest. Usually, when it comes to leaving, everyone first of all thinks about feeding and watering, because it is not for nothing that if something does not grow, the owners complain: "There is enough fertilizer and water, what is he lacking?"

If we turn to any book on growing plants, then the first section, which begins the description of agricultural technology, is called "Site Selection". And now, honestly, let's say: how often do we follow his recommendations? But this is very important.

For example, plants growing in unsuitable conditions, not only do not harvest, get sick, are damaged by pests, but also accumulate nitrates in their fruits, for the eradication of which we are so fighting.

Of course, not all of us were lucky to get a plot on a well-drained southern slope with loamy or sandy loamy slightly acidic soils, but observing plants in any garden, you can notice that there are places where certain species feel clearly better, but often such observations remain unclaimed, and they should not be neglected.

Although our plots are mostly small, there are houses, outbuildings, fences, etc. creates an abundance of different microclimate corners, the properties of which will help our plants feel better. So what should you pay attention to?

The most difficult in terms of site selection (here I mean not the site as a whole, but the specific point where the plant will be planted) are fruit trees (especially stone fruits) - they require good drainage, a sunny location, well-prepared fertile soil, only with such conditions, in addition to branches and leaves, you can also get fruits. A wonderful place for capricious trees, and other "complex" plants, are areas in front of the southern facade of a house, a barn, a blind fence - the most favorable conditions are always created there, if, of course, there is sufficient drainage.

However, rarely will anyone put a house on an undrained area. For example, this spring in our garden the peonies growing along the path were beaten by spring frosts, and the bush of the same variety planted in the front garden in front of the house was not damaged. The pear growing at the southern wall also blossomed faster than other trees planted in the open.

If we are talking about trees, then I cannot but express my opinion about the planting material. Without diminishing the merits of nurseries that grow good planting material (there are not many of them, unfortunately, but they are), it is still better to grow a winter-hardy skeleton-former in the garden on your own, and graft on it the varieties you already like.

And don't be afraid of the word "vaccination". If you are really interested in the productivity of your trees, you cannot do without vaccination, especially since this is not so tricky business. In winter, you need to stock up on a bunch of willow branches and a sharply sharpened knife and just get your hand in making even and long cuts - this is the basis of a good vaccination, and the further is described in many articles and books on this topic.

As for cuttings, it is much easier to get them than a ready-made seedling. First, you can simply ask your friends or neighbors for a branch from a tree you like. In addition, cuttings are sent by many amateur gardeners, as well as institutes and stations that are engaged in selection. By the way, they can offer cuttings of varieties that will not soon appear on sale in the form of seedlings.

With berry bushes, it is somewhat easier - they can grow in more diverse conditions, but they also react poorly to shade and are very demanding on large doses of fertilizers, especially organic ones, so seriously think about how many bushes you need. It is better to take good care of a small number of bushes than badly to take care of a large one.

Especially watch out for black currant - this shrub perfectly propagates by cuttings, it has a lot of varieties, so often gardeners become owners of blackcurrant thickets, which are simply impossible to take good care of, and without care, instead of a high yield, you get a bunch of diseases, which are abound in currants.

A greenhouse and a vegetable garden require a place open to the sun all day, since only some crops can tolerate shading, and a well-drained area with very fertile soil - only then you can count on a decent return on your work. In the garden, permanent ridges are very helpful, on which fertilizers and water are used most rationally. But all the same, the sun for the garden is the most important thing.

And the most difficult, problematic areas of the garden should be given to … decorative crops. I can imagine how lovers of roses, dahlias, irises and similar plants will react to my words! But I am not saying that ornamental plants should be planted only there - just their variety is so great that for almost any, even the most uncomfortable corner of the garden, there will be one of those that will feel "at home" there.

Ornamental plants are represented by a huge number of species originating from different habitats. And if you take into account their requirements correctly, they will help to decorate all problem areas.

For a shady area with good moisture suitable, for example, a catchment, Volzhanka, Astilba, Astrantia, Badan, ferns, marigold, lily of the valley, bleeding heart, sapwood, meadowsweet, hosta, primrose, rudbeckia "golden balls", basil, fragrant violet.

And in a dry, open place, many bulbous, yarrow, alyssum, perennial asters, bells, cornflower, Korean chrysanthemums, doronicum, euphorbia, ornamental cereals, gypsophila, daylilies, irises, lupines, peonies, cinquefoil, sedums, rejuvenated, will feel good. thyme.

In addition, ornamental plants will be able to brighten up the most "lost" year. This year, for example, bearded irises bloomed incredibly long and luxuriously for me - the weather was cool, the flowers did not fade for 3-4 days, and a sufficient amount of water allowed long, powerful peduncles to grow. Our neighbors had gorgeous roses blooming delightfully, and the flowers reached unprecedented sizes, which somehow compensated for the bitterness from the "drifted" harvest of most crops. So it turns out: if you approach your site with intelligence and care, then in any year, in any weather, it will give us the joy of a generous harvest or lush flowering of our favorite plants.
