Choosing a form of landscaping

And what an extravagant border is obtained from ornamental cabbage! It is especially attractive that the border of this plant becomes more decorative in the second half of the season, when the site is already somewhat "disheveled" by the harvest

Ornamental cabbage

Cabbage is a biennial plant, so it goes under the snow in the phase of decorative flowering, and not wilting. Ornamental cabbage is especially appreciated by European gardeners for the fact that it requires almost no maintenance and is very easy to cultivate. There she can often be seen in flower beds and along paths. Low-growing varieties of ornamental cabbage with leaves of the most varied colors are used to create borders. It is especially good for parterre curbs or along the driveway.

The best result is obtained when growing planting material with seedlings, with a race in time of 40-60 days. The soil under such a curb is tucked, as for planting late-ripening varieties of white cabbage, and seedlings are planted in early May one-row with a distance of 25 cm between plants or two-row staggered with distances of 30/30/30, deepening to the first true leaves. Until the seedlings fully survive, they provide sufficient watering, but then it is reduced.

A minimum of dressing and watering helps cabbage to quickly move from the growth phase to the decorative phase. If growth retardation is noticeable, you can use 1/8 mullein solution and feed half a liter for each plant. Such a border in the garden is always eye-catching.

Many gardeners are thinking about how to plant beardless remontant strawberries. It seems that not all the possibilities of this plant have been exhausted yet. We have already planted it just on the ridges, and on the pyramids, and in the flowerpots, and now it's time to use it to create a border.

Berry border

Its advantages: compact, does not grow in height at all, does not need a haircut, it is convenient to care for and harvest.

Its disadvantages: not suitable for shady places, without annual thinning, a drop in crop yield is possible, it needs to be cared for, like ordinary strawberries. Strawberry seedlings can be grown fairly easily at home from seeds. Saplings with two or three true leaves or older are suitable for setting the border. At the site of the future curb, they dig a trench 25-30 cm deep, lay a layer of drainage from shards, gravel, broken brick or sand and fill it with fertile garden soil with the addition of humus in a bucket for two running meters. For filling the soil, it is best to use a special long-term fertilizer designed for berry crops.

Planting from cassettes of seedlings with a closed root system can be carried out throughout the growing season, and with an open one it is best in spring, during May. They are planted in one row, since the strawberries grow rapidly and form, although compact, but rather wide bushes. To obtain the desired density in the first year, the seedlings are planted ten centimeters later, in order to plant every second bush next spring, for example, to continue the curb. It is better to take varieties of remontant and small-fruited varieties, they look best in border plantings, decorated with flowers and berries before the frost begins.

Along with the returned fashion for drugstore gardens and herbal farming, the idea of a spicy border comes to us. In classical gardens, plantings of herbs are always framed with borders of strict geometric shapes. With the advent of new varieties of garden spices, more and more attention is paid to their decorative appearance.

Spicy border

Its advantages: it is easy to prepare planting material, since grasses reproduce well both by seeds and vegetatively. In addition, grasses easily tolerate cutting and hold their shape for a long time; it is convenient to combine the formation of a border and the collection of spicy raw materials.

Its disadvantages: a spicy border tends to spread in width, needs radical pruning every spring, and may be an allergen.

Spicy herbs can be roughly divided into two groups. The former prefers nutrient-rich, moist soil, but it can thrive well in the shade - these are excellent borders for tall flowers and vegetables that are undemanding to soil fertility (which will not be oppressed by voracious neighbors). These include lemon balm, peppermint and water mint, chives and parsley.

The second group - lovers of poor sandy soils and bright sunlight. These are marjoram, oregano, savory, basil and thyme. Annual spicy herbs are grown through seedlings, the rest - by sowing seeds immediately to a permanent place. Herbal borders, even the most difficult ones in culture, are so unusual and interesting that all difficulties pay off with interest.

Chicken onion borders are very popular in England, it is usually used in conjunction with abundantly flowering plants where it is necessary to add a juicy green color, or in rose gardens, where the lower tier of plantings is bare. Such a border can serve you for more than one year, it is very unpretentious, bright, easily tolerates pruning and grows quickly. A sunny or semi-shady place is suitable for laying a curb, the soil should not be acidic and rich in nutrients.

If you have the opportunity to protect young seedlings from weeds, then the border can be sown with seeds, their germination capacity is quite high, but for greater density the sowing is carried out in a thickened manner. They sow with a ribbon 20 cm wide or in four rows, with a distance between rows of 5 cm. In the third year after sowing, chives begin to bloom massively, this does not reduce the decorativeness of the border, but still you should not allow the seeds to ripen, and ripening capsules must be cut off.

Also, from the third year, thinning of the thickened border can be carried out. To do this, cut the dense turf with a sharp shovel and plant it more freely. To create decorative spicy borders, you can safely recommend plants such as thyme - low cushion borders; thin-leaved mint with yellow-green foliage and variegated varieties of oregano - bright, colored borders, as well as wormwood (lemon tree, divine tree) with filigree silvery foliage, which perfectly holds its shape after cutting and is even suitable for curly pruning. Basil, although thermophilic, has varieties with interesting aromas and color of leaves, and the simplest parsley of "curly" varieties looks like lush lace in the border.

The presence of borders in your garden and flower garden immediately gives the site a special style, this classic never goes out of style. Borders are a powerful compositional tool that helps to organize the space on the entire site, diversify and, at the same time, streamline landscaping, and also emphasize what you would like. Now you know how to create a border, you just have to choose which one.
