The experience of growing everyone's favorite strawberries in risky farming

The process of laying a new plantation of strawberries is significantly complicated if you purchased its seedlings somewhere. Let's leave aside the question of its grade and infection by pests and diseases. We will assume that the seedlings are good. In this case, a number of essential points arise.

It is necessary to save the seedlings during transportation. In this case, the roots will have to be wrapped in a very damp burlap so as not to dry them. If possible, it would be good to add wet sawdust or moss inside the burlap, making sure that they cover the roots on all sides. Then wrap everything in plastic and carefully tie the resulting bundle in different places. In this case, it is impossible to strongly tighten the plants, but still it is necessary to achieve their fixation in a certain position. This will help protect the seedlings during transport.

Both the plants themselves and their roots must be protected from the sun and wind, both during transportation and during the planting itself. If the roots are a little dry (perhaps even before the moment when you could pack them in burlap), then you need to hold the seedlings in water before planting. The duration of such an exposure depends on the degree of drying of the roots and can reach 1-2 days. But I would advise against buying such seedlings at all. Although, of course, there are options in life when you don't have to choose much.

When purchasing seedlings with an open root system, and in our country, as a rule, it is difficult to find seedlings in pots at all, you have to resort to some shortening of the roots and lower leaves of the seedlings. The roots have to be shortened, because with a length of more than 6-7 cm, it is very difficult to straighten them well when planting. And if not straightened, they will die. Leaves have to be cut to reduce moisture evaporation (if the planting time coincided with the heat). In this case, I leave only one top unfolded sheet and, of course, a heart.

What weather should you plant strawberries

It is obvious that seedlings with an open root system should be planted in cloudy, rainy weather. However, it is very difficult to adapt to the weather. And if the deadlines are already running out, then you can plant in hot weather, taking all safety measures. In other words, watering the planting with stimulating drugs, wrapping it in a covering material and regularly monitoring the moisture content of the planting. Naturally, like other plants, it is preferable to plant strawberries in this case in the evening.

Which landing is considered incorrect?

Plants are not planted correctly if:

the upper part of the roots is above the soil surface (roots are bared) - shallow planting; shallow planting can lead to the death of plants due to freezing of the roots in winter or drying out in summer

"Heart" buried in the ground - deep landing; deep planting can lead to the death of a large number of plants in winter, because the covered hearts in most cases vyput

After the end of the landing, you need to carefully review all the landings in full - if there is a shallow landing. We must carefully free the covered hearts from the ground. When exposing the roots, it is necessary to sprinkle them with earth: the simplest solution in this case is to immediately mulch the plantings.

Do plants need to be mulched after planting?

Bearing in mind the enormous benefits of mulching, immediately after planting, it is better to mulch the land around the plants with semi-rotted sawdust (you can also use fresh sawdust, but then you need to add urea), tree bark, straw or leaf litter. The use of black mulching material (with cut holes for each strawberry bush) in this case, from my point of view, is ineffective (I have experimented with it many times). The reason lies, on the one hand, in the fact that from the second year of planting, strawberries have to be intensively fertilized, and if there is material, this is very inconvenient. On the other hand, every year strawberry plants seem to rise from the ground, the root system is exposed, and new portions of organic mulch have to be added every year.

In the presence of a covering material, this becomes, in principle, impossible. As for the statement that weeds do not grow under the black covering material, this is all nonsense. They grow - and how, because it is warmer and moderately humid there. The only plus is that in the first year of life, the adaptation period of plants increases significantly, and they leave in winter stronger and more beautiful. But, as practice has shown, the same results can be achieved by covering young plantings on top with an ordinary white covering material and leaving them so for the winter.

Strawberry "kindergarten"

We have paid a lot of attention in this article to planting strawberries. But you need to take her seedlings somewhere! It is best, if you have good varieties and plants are not affected by diseases and pests, to grow seedlings yourself. This is much safer and more efficient. This is what we are going to talk about now.

Ideally, of course, agronomists recommend setting aside a separate strawberry ridge for growing seedlings, creating a so-called mother plant, from which you, of course, will no longer collect the berries (since the peduncles are removed initially). Unfortunately, this option is not for everyone. The lucky ones who have 20 acres, of course, can afford such a luxury, but it seems to me that this option is not suitable for owners of 6-10 acres.

Therefore, I compromise and grow a mustache on the first year ridge, which is at some distance from all other ridges, and I dare to hope that there are not so many pests and diseases there.

When growing your own seedlings, it is advisable to follow several rules that will help you get the right amount of plants for your own garden without much hassle.

1. It is necessary to grow seedlings not as “God will put it on your soul”, but necessarily in pots; usually peat pots are recommended, but I prefer regular seedling pots but no bottom. Of course, they have a bottom, just for the time of growing strawberry seedlings, I take out these plates. As a result, instead of the bottom in the pots, there is a fairly wide hole through which you can easily drag not only a strawberry whisker, but even something more dimensional. I take a pot, thread a strong tendril I like through the bottom hole and pour wet sawdust into the pot to the middle. At the same time, I try to ensure that the sawdust fits well the antennae on all sides and becomes a good environment for it to form the root system. Then I conveniently set the pot between the strawberry bushes and water the tendril.

2. It is worth starting growing seedlings with the appearance of the very first whiskers, because the sooner you start this business, the sooner you can start a new strawberry plantation.

3. You need to take only the first mustache, and all the rest that will already go out of the pot must be carefully trimmed.

4. It is very strictly necessary to monitor the moisture content of the sawdust soil in the pots. The slightest drying out of it will negate all your efforts. You usually have to water the pots daily.

5. You can plant seedlings in a permanent place as the required number of outlets with a developed root system is formed.

When growing seedlings in pots, there are several advantages over conventional rooting of the whiskers between rows:

  • you get a better quality seedling with strong beautiful leaves and a developed root system;
  • seedlings are formed under better lighting conditions, because the pot is raised above the ground, and the antennae is not lost among the numerous strawberry greens, which means it receives a sufficient amount of light;
  • regular moistening of sawdust contributes to the rapid formation of a powerful root system;
  • seedlings grown in this way do not need to be additionally grown, but can be planted immediately in the ground;
  • mustaches rooted in pots are deliberately taken from the best plants, and therefore they cannot be confused with mustaches from unproductive plants (including strawberry weeds), the mustaches from which, as a rule, are distinguished by a greater developmental force; and, consequently, there is no potential opportunity to lay a bed of unproductive mustache.

Test tube babies

I myself am updating garden strawberries according to the technology I have described, but today the establishment of strawberry plantations by rooting and subsequent planting of a mustache is no longer the only possible way. In the biotechnological laboratory of the All-Russian Research Institute for Breeding of Fruit Crops, strawberry superelite, free from viral, fungal diseases and pests, have recently begun to be grown as planting material. And they grow it not from "good" mustaches, but using a special technology from tiny kidney tissue (literally from a few cells). First - in test tubes, and then - in disinfected nutritious peat cubes or in plastic cups. I know that in the Moscow region, it is already possible to purchase planting material for the strawberry super-elite without any problems. Perhaps a little time will pass, and just like the previously unavailable super-elite of potatoes,the super-elite of test-tube strawberries will also appear on sale. And, I think, this will be the best option for renewing and improving your strawberry plantations, although, it is not difficult to guess about it, it is quite expensive.
