Raspberry varieties that bear fruit on annual shoots

The generally accepted technology for growing existing varieties of raspberries bearing fruit on two-year-old stems is very laborious and energy-intensive. And it is no coincidence that the growing interest of gardeners is aroused by the raspberry varieties that yield the harvest in the year of the formation of young shoots.

Indeed, the appearance of such remontant varieties, bearing fruit in autumn, radically changes the standard technology of cultivation of this berry crop.

In the previous publication ("Flora Price" No. 10 (75) on raspberry varieties of the Rashbush type, fruiting on annual shoots, a detailed technology for growing such varieties was presented. Continuing this topic, we will consider brief characteristics of the most common varieties of well-known Russian breeders of a corresponding member of the RAAS IV Kazakov and professors VSTISiP (Moscow) VV Kichin - Abrikosovaya, Augustina, Indian summer, Indian summer-2, Hercules, Kalashnik, Reliable, Elegant and others.

The development of shoots of these varieties from the beginning of growth to ripening of the crop fits in one season, flowering and fruiting in them occurs once on the entire shoot that has grown during a given growing season, which significantly distinguishes them from varieties with double fruiting. In recent years, at the Kokinsky base, I. V. Kazakov developed a number of new remontant varieties of raspberries that bear fruit on annual shoots: Bryanskoe Divo, Golden Domes, Monomakh's Hat, Diamond and others.

Below is a brief description of the most common remontant varieties that bear fruit on annual shoots in late summer - early autumn.

Apricot. The variety was created by I. V. Kazakov at the Kokinsky support point of the VSTISiP. Yellow-fruited remontant variety of complex interspecific origin. Recommended for the Central and Central Black Earth regions.

The bush is medium-sized (1.3-1.6 m), slightly spreading. Shoot productivity is average (5-6 replacement shoots). Shoots are erect, highly branching, the zone of autumn fruiting exceeds half of their length. Annual shoots of medium thickness, green, with a waxy bloom, slightly spiny. Thorns are thin, curved downward, with a base, green, concentrated in the lower and middle parts of the shoot. Leaves are medium in size, slightly wrinkled, green.

The autumn harvest in the Central region is over 1.5-2 kg per bush. Weakly affected by raspberry mites and didimella.

It begins to ripen in the first decade of August (in conditions of central Russia), fruiting continues until frost, the potential yield is realized by 65-75%. Berries are medium, weighing 2.8-3 g, blunt-conical, golden-apricot color with small, firmly adhered drupes, dessert taste, universal use.

Advantages: high yield, original, attractive color of berries and their high taste.

Disadvantages: tender, poorly transportable berries.

Augustine. The variety was obtained by I. V. Kazakov at the Kokinsky support point of VSTISiP from free pollination of interspecific elite seedling No. 96. Recommended for the Central and Central Black Earth regions.

The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading. Shoot-forming ability is average (5-6 replacement shoots). The shoots are erect, the fruiting zone is half their length. Annual shoots are thin and medium, green, with a waxy coating, prickly. Thorns are thin, short, concentrated in the lower part of the shoot, light brown. The leaves are large, wrinkled, dark green.

Autumn harvest in the Central region is 1.2 and 1.7 kg per bush.

The variety is resistant to the main fungal diseases and pests.

It begins to ripen in the first half of August, fruiting is long, until the onset of autumn frosts, the potential yield is realized by 60-70%.

Berries are medium-sized, weighing 3-3.5 g, round-conical, dark raspberry color, with uniform drupes, sweet and sour taste, universal purpose.

Advantages: high yield, resistance to fungal diseases. The berries can hang on the stalk for a long time without decay.

Disadvantages: a prolonged period of flowering and ripening of the crop.

Indian summer. Received by I. V. Kazakov at the Kokinsky support point of VSTISiP from crossing the varieties Sentyabrskaya and Kostinbrodskaya x Novost Kuzmina. Recommended for the Central and Central Black Earth regions.

The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading. Shoot-forming ability is average. Shoots are erect, strongly branching, the fruiting zone exceeds half their length. Annual shoots of medium thickness, at first green, by autumn they become gray-brown, with a waxy coating, prickly. The spines are hard, thin, straight, light purple. Leaves are medium in size, almost flat, green. Winter hardiness is high.

Autumn harvest in the conditions of the Central Black Earth zone is up to 1 kg per bush, and in more southern regions, 1.5-2 kg. In the North-West, the autumn harvest is formed only on the tops of annual shoots, therefore, after picking the berries, the dried top is cut off, leaving the shoot for a summer harvest next year, like in ordinary varieties.

Berries are medium-sized (up to 3.5 g), round-conical, bright red, with heterogeneous, loosely linked drupes, sweet and sour taste, universal purpose. They are indispensable for the preparation of autumn "raw" jam (berries, mashed with sugar without heat treatment), which is stored for a long time in an ordinary cellar without hermetic sealing.

Advantages: a remontant variety, productive, resistant to low temperatures and fungal diseases.

Disadvantages: weak shoot-forming ability.

Indian summer - 2. The variety was bred by I. V. Kazakov at the Kokinsky base of the VSISiP from crossing the varieties Ottom Bliz and Indian Summer. Recommended for the Central and Central Black Earth regions.

The bush is medium-sized (1.2-1.6 m), slightly spreading. Shoot-forming ability is moderate (4-5 replacement shoots). Shoots are upright, strongly branching, not lodging under the weight of the crop, the fruiting zone is 2/3 of their length.

Annual shoots are thick and medium, green at first, bright purple with a waxy bloom by autumn, prickly. Thorns of medium hardness, prickly, thin, straight, with a base, purple, located along the entire length of the shoot. Leaves are medium in size, slightly wrinkled, slightly curled, green, by autumn they acquire an anthocyanin hue.

Autumn harvest in central Russia is 2-2.5 kg of berries per bush. Differs in high tolerance to the main fungal diseases and resistance to raspberry mites.

Begins to ripen in the first decade of August, long-term fruiting, potential yield is realized by 80-90%.

Berries are medium-sized (3-3.5 g), broadly blunt-conical, raspberry-colored with homogeneous, firmly adhered drupes, sweet and sour taste, universal purpose.

Advantages: high yield, almost complete ripening of the crop before the onset of autumn frosts, resistance to major fungal diseases.

Disadvantages: strong thorniness, insufficient shoot-forming ability.

Hercules. The variety was created by I. V. Kazakov at the Kokinsky support point of VSTISiP when crossing the Ottom Bliz variety with an interspecific seedling 14-205-4. Recommended for the Central and Central Black Earth regions.

The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading. Shoot-forming ability is low (3-4 replacement shoots). The shoots are strong, erect, do not need a trellis, the fruiting zone takes up half of their length. Annual shoots of medium thickness, at first green, by autumn they become purple with a waxy bloom, prickly.

Thorns are hard, prickly, thin, straight with a downward slope, light brown, along the entire length of the shoot. Leaves are medium-sized, wrinkled, twisted, dark green.

Autumn harvest in the middle zone of Russia is 1.5 kg per bush. The variety is resistant to raspberry mites, slightly affected by fungal diseases.

The berries begin to ripen in the first half of August, fruiting continues until frost, the potential yield is realized by 60-70%.

The berries are very large, average weight 5-6 g, maximum - 10 g, truncated conical shape, ruby color, with homogeneous, firmly fastened drupes, sweet and sour taste, universal purpose.

Advantages: high yield, very large, dense berries with increased resistance to decay.

Disadvantages: weak shoot-forming ability, prolonged fruiting period.

Kalashnik. The variety was obtained by V. V. Kichina from free pollination of interspecific remontant forms at VSTISiP (Moscow). Recommended for the Central region of Russia.

The bush is medium-sized (1.3-1.5 m), spreading. Shoot-forming ability is good (7-12 replacement shoots). Shoots are well developed, prickly, resistant, strongly branching. The potential of the variety is already being realized in September.

Productivity - 2 kg per bush, potential - up to 2.5 kg. The beginning of ripening is the first decade of August, the main harvest is at the end of August.

The berries are medium-sized, weighing 2-3 g, the maximum weight of the first harvest reaches 4-5 g, they are red, sweet and sour, dense, well separated from the fruit. The variety is distinguished by increased survival rate under adverse conditions.

In the Pushkin fruit and berry nursery "NPTs Agrotekhnologiya", for three years now, remontant varieties of raspberries of the selection of I. V. Kazakova, fruiting on annual shoots - Apricot, Augustina, Hercules, Elegant and Nadezhnaya, - which begin to ripen in mid-August and bear fruit for a long time until stable frosts.

The varieties Elegant and Nadezhnaya are medium-sized, the weight of berries in the Elegant variety is 4-5 g, in the Nadezhnaya variety - 3-4 g, both varieties have good taste, and the latter also has a specific raspberry aroma, although the yield is inferior to the Elegant variety.

The characteristics of the varieties Hercules, Apricot and Augustina correspond to the above.

Despite the fact that in the North-West the potential harvest of all studied varieties does not fully ripen due to the lack of autumn heat, all of these varieties are of great interest for amateur gardening in our region, and the planting material of these varieties is in great demand.

At the end of September, in agreement with I. V. Kazakov Pushkin fruit and berry nursery replenished with new large-fruited remontant varieties - Bryanskoe Divo, Babe Leto-2 and some others.
