Stems, leaves and even fruits can be smooth and pubescent, and the color range of ripe fruits will flatter the wildest imagination: white, raspberry, pink, red, yellow, orange, green, brown, black and, finally, with patterned fruits - such a variety fruit colors, perhaps, can not be found in any vegetable plant.

The least information can be found about tomatoes with patterned fruit color. I have been growing three varieties of tomatoes with these fruits for over 13 years. All stories were received through amateur channels from foreign countries. The varieties Apple and Tigrovye are distinguished by irregular radial stripes of yellow-green color in immature fruits; when ripe, these stripes also retain a paler color against the background of the main red color of the fruit, while becoming yellow and orange.

The intermittent yellow-orange stripes of the Apple variety make some fruits very similar to the Cinnamon striped apples. They are also about the size of an apple, rather large, within 200 g. Semi-determinant type bushes are about 180 cm high. To obtain abundant harvests and ripen all fruits, the tops of the bushes are minted at about 150 cm. Each brush bears up to 10 fruits. They are dense in structure, good for canning, keeping, transportable.

This variety in 1992 at the first test showed itself to be very late ripening, but as a result of many years of acclimatization, it behaved like an average ripening period. In the last five to six years, all fruits ripen right on the bush until the end of August. Late blight and other diseases have never been affected. Grown in a summer film greenhouse.

Tomato variety Tiger also has a patterned striped color, for which it got its name. It immediately behaved like a medium-ripening variety. Now, rather, it can be described as medium early. Its fruits weigh 80-100 g with bright interpenetrating yellow-orange stripes. The bushes are about 200 cm high, but their uncontrolled growth should not be allowed, and for the full return of the harvest, it is better to mint the tops at a height of about 160-170 cm.

This tomato is grown in one stem, like the Apple variety, the stepsons are removed during the growth process. Tiger tomatoes also ripen in the open field, in this case, the top should be minted below the growth indicated earlier by 20-50 cm, depending on the climate in your area. It is noteworthy that when using these colored tomatoes in salting, the elegant color of the fruits is preserved.

In comparison with the aforementioned varieties, the patterns on the fruits of the Fireworks varieties of tomatoes are of a slightly different nature. The subcutaneous yellow-orange color of the fruit against a red background is insignificant, but the pattern is created on the epidermis (on the skin of the fruit). Patterns, both intermittent and continuous, in the form of radial dots and stripes, keratinized scales on the surface of the fruit - this is a sign that is even rarer and more difficult to fix in subsequent generations during selection, even more difficult and rare, according to the experience of my 13-year observations and tests than a sign of yellow-orange stripes.

The explanation for the appearance of such patterns on fruits is as follows. Chlorophyll in the form of radial stripes remains under the skin in them for a longer time than in the bulk of the fruit. Chlorophyll gives the fruit a pattern of yellow-green stripes in unripe fruits, then during their ripening the stripes change their color to yellow-orange.

Signs of the formation of greening and striping in the case of varieties Apple and Tiger do not disappear and are repeated when selecting for 13 generations. The same number of patterns are repeated on the skin of the "Fireworks" variety. In terms of taste, Fireworks is a fleshy salad variety. The bushes are tall, the mass of fruits can reach 400-500 g.

Tomato variety Velvet

And about one more wonderful variety. The Velvet variety has pubescent leaves, stem and fruits. The bushes are tall about 200 cm, the fruits are medium-sized, round, the yield is high. In terms of the structure of the bush, it is very similar to the well-known variety Mani Maker. In 1992, when I just started growing this variety, the offspring split into low-growing small-fruited and tall ones with medium-sized fruits.

Naturally, during the selection, the second line was chosen, which I am now leading. Velvet tomatoes are very decorative with white pubescence of stems, leaves and fruits, the fruits are quite dense, the taste is very good, sweet with barely noticeable sourness. At present, the variety has fully acclimatized, until mid-September, the entire crop ripens directly on the bushes, although the first 5-6 years of cultivation, all fruits ripened only in maturation.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the discovery of green stripes as a stable sign of the greening or patterning of tomatoes was made by American scientists Larsen and Poblak in 1951, and the isolation of pubescence as a characteristic of the variety was made by Rick and Butler in 1966.

Growing tomatoes is very exciting and rewarding at the same time.
