More and more often I hear complaints from friends of gardeners that the cucumbers have failed again. I don't know what growing technologies they use, what varieties they chose, but the cucumber beds in my garden from year to year please with an excellent harvest.

It is known that cucumbers are a heat-loving plant that grows well on fertilized, moist soils; it is afraid of the north winds. Based on these requirements of the crop for growing conditions, it is necessary to try to provide these conditions for cucumbers.

In the area where I usually grow them, I choose a well-lit place, protected from the north and north-east winds. I have always prepared the soil for cucumbers since the fall, dug up, introduced both organic and mineral fertilizers, it is spilled with a solution containing effective microorganisms - the preparation "Baikal - EM-1". In the spring, I dig the soil again. I plant cucumbers in separate nests with a diameter of 30 cm, the distance between them is 60 cm.

I make nests in order to provide cucumbers with the most favorable environment and the desired moisture regime. I mark these nests again with the help of a bucket, since its diameter in the upper part is exactly 30 cm. After marking from the nest, I select the soil to a depth of 20-22 cm (on the bayonet of the shovel), I bring humus, rotted grass, straw, sawdust into the nest, pour half a glass of ash. I mix all these components with the removed soil and pour everything into the hole.

It is much easier to create a favorable water regime for cucumbers in the nest, since in the case of a rainy summer, moisture in the nest is well absorbed, and in case of drought, it is very convenient to water the cucumbers in the nests - the water does not roll off the garden bed, it is well absorbed and retained by the soil. I plant two or three cucumber plants in each nest. For the entire period of development, I provide them with 2-3 additional fertilizing with organic fertilizers.

When growing cucumbers, I prefer varieties of Far Eastern selection, in my opinion, they are more resistant to diseases and productive. Here are the favorites that provide my family with juicy greens:

Far Eastern 27 is an old pickling variety well known to many gardeners. His lashes are long, but the branching is average. The first harvest of fruits - after 50 days; greens with a diameter of 5 cm, 12 cm long and weighing 90-120 grams, the fruits are light green, large tuberous.

Cascade is an early ripe variety (35-45 days), the length of the main whip is 150 cm, strong branching. Zelenets elongated or fusiform up to 15 cm with sparse large tubercles.

Mig is a medium early variety (45 days), prone to parthenocarp, its main lash up to 180 cm long, gives about three shoots of the first and second orders. Zelenets elongated-cylindrical, intensely green, 14-18 cm long. Fruits retain their presentation for five days after harvesting.

Erofey is a mid-season variety (up to 48 days). The plant is distinguished by its powerful development and strong foliage. The main stem is up to two meters long. Fruits up to 12 cm long are oblong-ovoid, green with a pattern in the form of spots and stripes, as well as with rare tubercles. Zelentsy do not turn yellow on the plant for a long time and retain marketable properties after taking off for about a week.

Lotus is a mid-season variety (up to 50 days). The main stem is up to two meters long, it gives about five lashes of the first and second order. The fruit is 12 cm long and weighs up to 110 grams, oval-cylindrical, covered with large, sparse tubercles. The color of the cucumber is green with white stripes.

Haba - has a stable yield, a high yield of marketable products; early maturing variety, bee-pollinated. The length of the greenery is up to 10 cm, it is cylindrical in shape and weighs up to 100 grams. The variety has a long fruiting period.

All these varieties of cucumbers are unpretentious, resistant to diseases, and most importantly, they bear fruit until the very frost. During the season, I twice spray the plantings with a solution of sour milk (1 liter per 10 liters of water).

I also really like the varieties of cucumbers of the outstanding Orenburg breeder P. Ya. Sarajeva. Each of its wonderful varieties has its own special purpose:

Soldier - the variety is distinguished by cold and drought resistance, extremely unpretentious in cultivation, disease resistant and gives huge yields in any, even the most unfavorable years.

Uchitelsky is a very early ripening cucumber variety, its fruits have a bright green, emerald color, amazing taste and aroma. This cucumber is extremely good in salads, okroshka, suitable for decorating any table, has medicinal properties.

Strong - this variety has the fruits of an excellent appearance, it is over-yielding, cucumbers are especially good for harvesting - they completely retain their original shape, bright color, taste and aroma when canning, are good for pickles, marinades. Cucumbers prepared from these varieties are strong, tasty and crunchy.

For many years now, in my garden, they have been giving high yields of varieties and hybrids of cucumber: Apocalypse of the Konyaevs, Altai, Blik, Brother Ivanushka, Vyaznikovsky, Merry company, Gourmet, Grozdevoy, Eva, Zubrenok, Chinese climbing, Kozyrnaya Karta, Legend, Kid, Moravian gherkin, Monastic, Reliable, Bumpy, Sancho Panza, Rural, Starorusskie, Sir, Russian style, Favorite and others. All these varieties have small, strong and crunchy greens.

If the varieties of cucumbers are short, that is, they do not grow much, I do not form them. If the varieties are long-leaved, then it is better to form them - pinch the top of the main stem when it reaches a length of 80-100 cm or 120 cm, and all lateral shoots must be pinched at a length of 40-50 cm.

On all lateral shoots of the first order (40-50 cm), more shoots of the second order will grow, but I leave them no more than 12-20 cm long. It is also impossible to allow such a situation that the lateral shoots grow long, as they intertwine and, as a rule, on long shoots, cucumber ovaries turn yellow and dry out.

If there are many male flowers on the side shoots, but there are no female ovaries, this may indicate a thickened planting. The abundance of male flowers can also be caused by excessive watering or shading of the plantings. In the open field in the garden, I usually do not tie up cucumber plants. But it will still be better if they are raised 80-90 cm or even higher - in this case it will be easier for you to fight pests and diseases, and it is more convenient to harvest in this position.

The seeds of the newest, rare, frost-resistant, over-yielding varieties of cucumbers, which I have described, you can get by ordering them by cash on delivery.
