Urgent work at the end of summer

Any owner of a summer cottage or garden plot at the end of summer always has a lot of work. First of all, this, of course, is the harvesting of the grown gifts of summer. However, in August, we must not forget about the need to complete three more very important tasks. These include pruning fruit trees, dividing and replanting spring-flowering perennials, and re-sowing a number of early ripening vegetable crops.

The first of this month 's tasks is to regulate tree growth. Such pruning should be used, first of all, to maintain the small size of small-sized crowns of fruit-bearing trees and to combat overgrowth of the top after the crown has been reduced. From my own experience, I know that such pruning is especially important as a method of caring for lowered crowns, since after winter pruning, many vertically growing shoots appear on the upper branches, which further strongly shade the lower part of the crown and nullify the pruning effect.

Therefore, in the apple and pear tree, all vertical shoots in the upper part of the lowered crowns in August must be cut out. Such removal of a large number of shoots with leaves, judging by experience, is compensated by an increase in the photosynthesis of leaves inside and at the bottom of the crown, as well as an improvement in the color and taste of those fruits that were shaded by distant shoots.

In plum, vertical shoots up to 1 m long can be used for fruiting after crown reduction. Some of these shoots are cut out, and some are rejected to an inclined or even horizontal position.

In this form, the shoots are strengthened by bringing them under a neighboring branch or tying them to it. Due to this, after a year, such shoots, as a rule, give a bountiful harvest. When trimming flat crowns in August, they limit the thickness of the upper part, cutting out individual branches protruding in the row spacing. At the same time, the lower part of the crown is not formed.

At this time, among the healthy branches, dried and diseased branches are clearly visible. It is imperative to delete them. At the same time, it is recommended to re-cut the near-stem growth. We emphasize at the same time that since the main part of the trimming is done in the upper part of the crowns, to facilitate its reception and execution from the ground, you can use an air pruner (lopper) on a long pole, removing the cutting plate from it and sharpening the inner edge of the hook.

The second task, the division of perennials associated with a flower garden, is started when the peony, iris, aquilegia, anemone, cornflower, lily, dicentra, primrose, lily of the valley, pyrethrum, veronica, swimsuit, etc. have already faded and are in a state of relative rest. this time they are carefully dug out, the above-ground part is cut off, the roots are cleaned from the soil and divided into separate parts.

At the same time, it is desirable to choose such a moment in time when, during division, the natural collapse of the roots occurs and they themselves disintegrate into separate divisions, and in any of them there must be a renewal bud of the next year and a section of the root or rhizome. Healthy delenki are freed from the remnants of old, sick and rotten rhizomes and planted in a permanent place.

Organic (compost, humus, etc.) and complex mineral fertilizers are introduced into the planting pit, and labels are fixed around the plantings in order not to forget where and what was planted, since the regrowth of the divisions begins only in the spring of next year.

Fulfilling the second task, one should not forget that in August the seeds of lupine, pyrethrum, cornflower, carnation, delphinium, bells are already ripening, which means that you need to take care of them. In this case, the fruits are cut off and placed to dry in a dry and well-ventilated room. Note that the seeds of a plant such as lupine can already be sown in August, and its first shoots, which appear in early September, usually winter well and very rarely freeze out. We also note that in August, phlox can be successfully cuttings, and immediately planted in ridges with nutritious soil and an admixture of sand. We only note that if the ridges with cuttings are shaded and kept moist, then by the end of autumn, sufficiently developed plants are formed.

The third task for the end of summer is to continue the re-sowing of vegetable crops, which began in July. If this work was delayed in July, it may well be carried out at the beginning of August, planting such early ripening crops as parsley, spinach, chives, dill, daikon, radishes, etc., on the vacated beds, which form the harvest in a relatively short time (30- 60 days).

From my experience and the experience of other summer residents and gardeners, I know that many such crops, prone to flowering, avoid it with later crops, and the products are more juicy and vitamin-rich, and they are well stored. In order for such a crop to succeed well, one should only responsibly treat the preparation of the soil (loosen, apply fertilizers, water in the absence of rain, etc.) and the choice of early ripening varieties for this purpose.

From the above, we can conclude that all three tasks of the end of summer are simple, feasible, and their results are worth carving out time for these simple, but very necessary and useful work.
