Cambodian Green Jain Eggplant

In our country, purple eggplants are traditionally prized, but they are not only that. For example, in Spanish cuisine, white eggplants are mostly used; in China and Thailand, green ones are very popular, which go well with hot peppers and curries. This season we also grew green-fruited eggplants. I liked everyone, although each variety is interesting in its own way.

For example, Apple Green, a variety developed in 1964 by Professor Elvin Mader. Super early variety (up to 70 days), excellent for cultivation both in the southern and northern regions of Russia. Bush up to 50 cm high, semi-spreading. The fruits are shaped like a large apple. In technical ripeness, eggplants are green, in biological ripeness they are yellow-green, up to 13 cm in diameter, weighing up to 500 g with thin skin. The pulp is white, does not darken for a long time, very delicate, with a delicious taste. The variety is very fruitful, bears fruit before frost, grows well in the house on the window.

Green - an early ripe (105-110 days) variety of eggplant with an original color of the fruit. The bush is 60-70 cm high. Fruits are green, elliptical, like large cream. The pulp is without bitterness, loose, salad-white with a slight greenish tinge and a characteristic "mushroom" taste. One bush gives about five large fruits weighing up to 300 g. Early ripening. The bush, although medium-sized, needs support due to the mass of ripening fruits. The variety is resistant to a complex of diseases, to cold.

Another variety of eggplant - Cambodia Green Jain - has an upright compact shrub up to 60 cm high with thick, sturdy stems. Fruits are very large, weighing 500 g and above, oval-compressed, slightly ribbed, up to 12 cm long, 7 cm in diameter. Fruits have a unique color - they are 2/3 green, and the bottom is white with dark green strokes and stripes. The pulp is white, tender, without bitterness. The yield is high. This rare variety was bred in Cambodia, a country with excellent cuisine, where its fruits are used in exquisite culinary recipes.

Green eggplant variety - Kermit - originally from Thailand. Bush up to a meter high, spreading. A distinctive feature of this variety is a stunning, fantastic yield. You spread the top leaves on the bush - and it looks like you got to the eggplant warehouse, so thickly hung with fruits. They are rounded, green in color with white stripes and strokes. Each weighing 60-120 grams, with a green cup. They are eaten raw and boiled. This variety has very tasty young shoots, which are also eaten raw and boiled. The variety is very productive.

Variety Chinese green - early ripening (up to 100 days), its bush is up to 50 cm high, compact, fruits weighing up to 400 g, they are round-elongated, green in technical ripeness, bronze-yellow in biological ripeness, flesh - white, tender, without bitterness. White egg - an early ripe eggplant variety, bush height up to 50 cm, created for open ground. Fruits are spherical-ovoid, 5-7 cm long, 9-10 cm in diameter. The variety forms many medium-sized fruits weighing 120-130 g with a white color, the flesh is greenish-white with a mushroom flavor.

White-fruited variety Pelican - mid-season (115-120 days), intended for cultivation in film greenhouses and in the open field. The plant is medium-sized, fruits weighing 200-250 g, 15-18 cm long, 4-6 cm in diameter, saber-shaped, milky white, matte, white pulp, medium density, tender. Red Ruffled Eggplant

There are also red eggplants in our collection:

One of them - Japanese red - it comes from China, has compact bushes up to 50 cm high when grown in open field and up to 80 cm - when grown in greenhouses. The thorns on the stems are completely absent. Leaves are light green, elongated-ovate, slightly pubescent. This variety is self-pollinating, the flowers are bisexual, the size is the same as that of a tomato, they are located in the axils of the leaves, collected in brushes of 6-7 pieces or more. More and more are constantly being revealed. Fruits are round, weighing about 100 g, they are light green with dark stripes in technical ripeness, then they turn orange and completely redden when ripe. Fruit skin is smooth, glossy, delicate eggplant taste. Unripe orangey fruits with beautiful yellow flesh are used for food. The use and preparation of the fruits of this variety is the same as that of the usual eggplant varieties. For example, I like fried orange wedges.

Red Ruffled variety - medium late (120-145 days). The plant is 40-50 cm high, compact, thorns on the stems are completely absent. Leaves are light green, elongated-ovate, slightly pubescent. Self-pollinating, bisexual flowers, the same size as a tomato, flowers are located in the axils of the leaves, collected in a brush of 6-7 pieces with a continuous growth of new ones. Fruits are round, weighing about 100 g, light green with dark stripes at an early stage. Then they turn orange and completely redden when ripe. Fruit skin is smooth, glossy, delicate eggplant taste.

Brazilian oval orange is the most popular variety of eggplant in the kitchen of Brazilian culinary experts. The variety is mid-season, high-yielding, orange fruits with green stripes, oval-shaped, weighing up to 100 g, very tasty. When fully ripe, they become saturated red and look very beautiful. However, it is advisable to use them in food when they turn slightly orange. If you are late and pick them bright orange or red, the fruits will be bitter, and completely red, they will be bitter at all. Apparently, for this reason, this variety has not become popular with culinary experts from other countries. They are found only in the collections of lovers of exotic vegetables.

We have been dealing with eggplants for many years, we have studied their agricultural technology well and are big lovers of this vegetable, especially varieties of Italian selection. Our most favorite varieties:

Rosa Bianca is a shrub up to 1 m high. Powerful, strong plant with large wide foliage. Pear-shaped ribbed eggplants attract attention with a pink-lavender blush on a white background of the fruit. Each of these fleshy eggplants weighs at least 400 grams, and the very first fruits gain 700-800 g and have an amazing taste, comparable only to the most delicate chicken fillet. The pulp is white, tender, without bitterness. The variety is mid-season (110-115 days).

Rotonda Bianca eggplant is a mid-season variety. From germination to maturity 110-120 days. Cultivation in open ground and under a film is possible. The plant is powerful, well leafy. It has beautiful round-oval white fruits with a pinkish-lilac bloom. The fruits are very large, have an exquisite taste without bitterness. The variety has a high yield.

We love them both for their large-fruited nature and for their truly snow-white pulp without bitterness.

It is known that when fully ripe, eggplants become coarse and tasteless, therefore they are always used a little unripe for food, but this does not apply to the Italian varieties named above, which are always equally tasty.

The new early variety Helios is also good. It conquers not only with an unusual exotic shape of light purple fruits (spherical, slightly flattened), but also with a mass (300-700 g), as well as an exquisite taste. The pulp is white, with a small amount of mucus, absolutely devoid of bitterness.

Eggplant variety Ametis

A very exotic new variety Amethyst is an early ripe high-yielding variety of eggplant. Technical ripeness occurs 95-100 days, biological ripeness - 125-130 days after germination. The plant is closed, 160-180 centimeters high. The leaf is medium-sized, green, notched, smooth, without thorns. The calyx is weakly spiny. The fruit is of medium length, pear-shaped, glossy. In technical ripeness, the color of the fruit is dark purple with a green tint and pink stripes, in biological ripeness it is brown in color with light longitudinal stripes. The pulp is white without bitterness. The Amethyst eggplant variety withstands low temperatures well, is able to set fruits under adverse conditions. The variety is intended for growing under film shelters. The landing pattern is 40x60 centimeters. The variety is resistant to the tobacco mosaic virus.

The varieties are amazed with high yields:

Alekseevsky - medium early variety, cylindrical fruits of excellent taste, without bitterness, weighing 150-200 g, dark purple color, shiny. The variety is appreciated for the amicable ripening of fruits.

The Banana variety is ultra-early. The bush is 40-55 cm high. Fruits are dark purple, elongated-cylindrical, banana-shaped. The pulp is milky white, without bitterness. Fruit weight up to 400 grams.

Regular watering, bird droppings and hot sunny weather certainly contributed to the high eggplant yield in our area. After all, eggplant is the most heat-loving culture. Along the way, I want to warn gardeners against applying a large amount of organic fertilizers, especially fresh manure, for eggplant. An excess of fertilizers leads to fattening of plants: the stem and lush leaves develop to the detriment of fruit formation, the ovaries fall off.
