The year of the moon for the gardener - how nature examined us in the past vegetable season 2013

At the very beginning of the last summer season, we, gardeners and gardeners, usually exchange opinions. All agreed that there was no cold April, May, there were no return frosts. Shrubs and herbaceous plants bloomed two weeks earlier. At the beginning of May, the soil was already ripe for crops and planting.

Gooseberry bushes in my garden are already 20-25 years old, they did not give me big problems before. Therefore, in the spring, I did not pay attention to them. And suddenly the Old Russian variety was covered in powdery mildew. It was too late to process it with anything, since the berries were already quite large - and all white from the disease. I uprooted it. The rest of the bushes were treated with soda ash (40 g per bucket), not with soap, as recommended, but with milk. I poured it in by eye. Then I picked berries from these bushes.

Vegetables also behaved outside the box last season. However, I and all the gardeners I know received a rich harvest of vegetables, berries and fruits. Everyone, with a few exceptions, is happy with the past season: for six months they fed their families from vegetable gardens and orchards, and they made so many preparations that there would be enough before the new harvest.

The year of the moon is blessed for pumpkin crops

In the past, 2013, and this was the year of the moon, the easiest way was to get a harvest of zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers. My first cucumbers had grown by May 31 - it was a hybrid of Grasshopper F1, and by June 15, Siberian Luck cucumbers were ready. I sowed them on April 20, they then bore fruit in a greenhouse until the end of September. But gardeners came to me and complained that instead of female flowers on their cucumber plants there are only male flowers. It happens - they sowed late, the daylight became long, the heat was, especially among those who did not sufficiently ventilate the greenhouses. So there was a gender failure - from female to male, but by the fall, the fruiting of cucumbers improved.

On a plot not far from ours, a neighbor grew cucumbers in the open field. Since it was warm, she only put a film on the beds with cucumbers for the night, which kept on the established arcs. She did not close the sides. And then unexpected pests came to light: jays pecked up cucumber ovaries in the garden. But in general, there were no particular problems with this culture. If something happened, they tried to figure it out on the spot, identified errors and eliminated them.

The zucchini grew by themselves. They were enough for food in the summer, and in the fall there was a supply of fruits. I have three plants that developed and bore fruit on a compost heap - marrow varieties Kuand and Aeronaut. I was able to stock up on squash caviar for the winter. Our family loves her. Previously, we made such caviar according to a recipe in which the vegetables first had to be fried, now we stew them.

Here is a recipe for zucchini caviar:

  • 1 kg zucchini,
  • 1 kg of red tomatoes,
  • 0.5 kg of sweet red pepper,
  • 0.5 kg of carrots,
  • 0.5 kg of onions,
  • 1 glass of sunflower oil
  • 1 tbsp. a spoonful of salt
  • 0.5 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp. a spoonful of vinegar at the end of cooking.

All vegetables must be ground in a meat grinder with a fine grid. Add salt, sugar, butter. Put on fire to simmer, stirring occasionally. From the moment of boiling, cook for 40-45 minutes (if the tomatoes are very juicy, watery, then first they must be boiled separately). At the end of cooking, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar. When hot, transfer to sterilized jars, roll up and wrap until it cools completely.

I lacked the spice in this recipe, and I began to add garlic, a slice of hot pepper to it, reduced the carrots a little, and added zucchini.

The pumpkin also worked out last season, but I had several questions that I have not yet found an answer to. During my practice, I went through a lot of types and varieties of pumpkins. It was necessary to stop at one of them, so that there would be a lot of carotene, and so that it would be sweet, and the harvest so that it would ripen every summer, so that it would not be small and not huge. And I chose this variety - Tiny. In 2011 and 2012, its harvest was excellent. Many fruits ripened, the pumpkin was sweet and orange.

I remember cutting the last pumpkin of the 2012 harvest last summer. It turned out to be so sweet that one might think - I poured sugar into the porridge. And it was so bright orange that both porridge and pilaf were orange. Everyone remembers that the summer of 2012 was very rainy.

There were no heavy rains in our area last season. Pumpkin variety Kroshka grew well, set fruit. It's time to harvest. We counted 13 pieces. We even worried: how to take such a crop from the dacha? But they removed only four large pumpkins, and the rest began to fall off for some reason, although their weight was only 1-1.5 kilograms.

When I watered the vegetables, I didn't worry about the pumpkin. I have never watered it on compost, because it goes down to a depth of 5 meters by its roots. And now the fruits fell off, I think, this time the lack of moisture affected, because there was no rain.

And I had one more question. When I began to cut the pumpkin to take half of it to the gardeners' holiday. Alas, it turned out to be not orange, but pale pink. I didn't even take her to the holiday. I looked, and there on the table with the harvest lay a cut pumpkin, someone from his harvest brought, and also pale. At the markets where gardeners sell their crops, I also saw cut pumpkins. And they didn't have a bright color. So now I'm trying to understand: what influenced the content of carotene in it, and why did my pumpkins fall off in just 2-3 days? I think that the dryness of the soil affected here, but there were other warm dry seasons, but I did not observe such a phenomenon then.

Many are dismissive of pumpkin, but it is very tasty and healthy. Our family loves pumpkin porridge, but it is especially popular -

Pilaf with pumpkin without meat

I cut the pumpkin into cubes, fry in vegetable oil, put it in a bowl, on top there is a layer of chopped raw leek, then another abundant layer - carrots chopped on a coarse grater. It is necessary to salt everything, pepper, add bay leaves, and then pour rice on top. Pour the contents with water so that the rice is completely covered - and into the oven.

You can make sweet pilaf with pumpkin and leek. For him, the pumpkin must also be cut into cubes, fried in vegetable oil, covered with leeks on top (before that, it must also be finely chopped, and then slightly darkened in a pan in butter). Put dried fruits on top of the leek. I use apples, pears, quince, thorns, raisins. Pre-pour boiling water over dried fruits to steam. I dry my sloe and use it instead of plums and cherries. I cover the fruits with rice, fill everything with water, in which the dried fruits were steamed, and into the oven.

And carrots in the year of the moon did not disappoint

When I was still at my site, gardeners began to call me, saying happily: "Even I got a carrot", "I got a carrot for a feast for the eyes!" … I just smiled and answered them: "This year the carrots should be like this." I am sure that everyone who sowed carrots in the ground last season, in which there was still a supply of moisture, did not lose. Then the warmth came, there was no frost, and the carrots dashingly began to grow.

The summer was warm, and although carrots are considered a cold-resistant crop, they are better in the warm. So the harvest was a success.

In our gardening, some have tried to sow carrots at two times. The first sowing as early as possible, and for winter storage they were sown in June-July. I remember that summer was cool and rainy then. Early-sown carrots are medium-sized, and late harvests are even smaller. And this is understandable: the ground has cooled off prematurely from the rains, there is no food for the plants, and no heat is supplied to the roots. We tried to cover the crops from above in order to warm the plants a little, but this did not help, because the earth was already cooling down.

I have not done such experiments, and it is clear that the growing season may not be enough for the plants. Although in the 2013 season, it may have turned out to be a late sowing crop. You just need to remember: if the carrots did not have enough growing season, then during storage they will germinate.

I plant carrots every year the same area. But if in 2012 she collected one bucket of 12 liters from it, then last season - already two such buckets. Warm weather immediately after germination played a role here.

In one of the seasons in the fall, one gardener came up to me and complained that she did not get carrots. And I know that she grows cabbage amazing: every head of cabbage, then 8-10 kilograms, but carrots failed. And last year, her carrots also turned out to be large, even, although she thinned out the crops only once. Root crops crowded in rows, literally squeezing each other out. Two factors have affected this. Firstly, it was the year of the moon, and secondly, it was warm since spring.

Last season, I sowed hybrids and varieties of mokovi News F1, Yaya F1, Losinoostrovskaya and Nantes improved. I tried the News F1 hybrid for the first time, the bag said: "The hybrid is highly productive in all weather conditions, on all types of soil." And, indeed, the roots turned out to be large, even, but the weather was excellent.

I have been using the Yaya F1 hybrid for several years. Forms not very large root crops, but even and beautiful. I have been growing the Losinoostrovskaya variety for a long time, but not every year. Sometimes I don't grow a season or two, and then I come back to it again. In the wettest, coldest summer, this carrot tastes better than all other varieties. And last season she turned out to be huge, beautiful. Root crops of the improved Nantes variety also grew huge, but not all, some of them turned out to be medium and small. Here, everything depends not on agricultural technology, but on the quality of the seeds, since all varieties of carrots grew on the same bed.

Gardeners often complain that the seeds have not sprouted, they have to re-sow. I test the seeds for germination at home, even before the start of the season. For example, last year carrots of the Nantskaya-4 variety of the SeDeK agricultural firm showed a germination rate of 30%, I do not sow such seeds, but mercilessly throw them away.

giant beet

Giant beet

I never grow beets through seedlings, as this occupation takes time, which is always not enough in spring. Those gardeners who grow seedlings say that in addition to plants for planting, they also receive culled specimens, the leaves of which are used to cook beetroot. But for this it is quite possible to use the roots of the last harvest. They need to be planted in a warm garden bed or compost. And they will kick out the leaves you need. And then from these plants in late summer or early autumn, you can still collect beet seeds.

Mistakes are made by those gardeners who do not look at the growing season of a particular variety (they are indicated on the packages). This applies to all cultures. Now mainly hybrids are used, which ripen in 75-90 days. They will sow seeds in late April-early May in a greenhouse, and then in late July-early August such beets ripen. And there is nowhere to store it. So the housewives toil, keep ripe root crops in the garden in August and September. It is necessary to carefully study the description of the variety on the bag and comply with the requirements of agricultural technology, then there will be no problems.

Last season, I sowed only the seeds of the Pablo F1 beet hybrid. Usually the fruits of this variety are even, not very large. Sowed seeds in the garden on June 5. The growing season for this hybrid of beets is 90-110 days. This means that by the end of September, root crops should ripen even in a cold summer. But last summer was warm, we didn't have rain until September. And there was only enough water in our well for irrigation in the greenhouse and for a bath. I spilled garlic, onions, carrots well only once a season, and I did it to the detriment of greenhouse plantings.

Surprisingly, beetroot crops have grown to enormous sizes even under these conditions. As far as I remember, Pablo F1 never reached this size before. One root crop was weighed, it pulled 800 grams by 1 kilogram, and it was not the largest fruit. And the neighbor's beets of the Cylindra variety turned out to be too heavy, although she was counting on medium-sized root crops to make it easier to cook. Some might say that we have overfed our beets. No, I didn’t pay much attention to the beets this year, I just weeded them. As always, it grew along the edge of the onion patch.

There was no frost in June, probably, the root crops immediately formed a good root system. But the onions on this bed turned out to be medium, there were only a few large bulbs. I shared my impressions with other gardeners, including those who regularly watered onion beds, but their bulbs were also average.

What struck me the most in the past season is the beet leaves. The time had come to harvest the roots, and the beet leaves were tall, even, large, shiny, without a single spot. Beauty is not to come off. For a long time my daughter and I stood over them, admired, looked at all the veins, it was a pity to cut such leaves and bury them in the garden. The first time we regretted that there was no camera. That's what an even, warm summer means.

Now I make kvass from beets, I drink it when I cut the root vegetables into small pieces, so the board is all in juice, very juicy beets.

By the way, about recipes

Usually vinaigrette is made from beets, borscht is cooked, various salads are prepared, and I also make kvass from it. I read his recipe in one newspaper as a useful remedy. Nutritionists say that beet kvass stabilizes blood pressure, therefore it is recommended, first of all, for hypertensive patients. In addition, this kvass is a real cleaner: it removes toxins, “sweeps away” all excess from the intestines and blood vessels, and since it contains the lipotropic substance betaine in its chemical composition, it also cleans the liver of toxins. It has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, cures insomnia, and even better than any lemonade and drinks, it quenches thirst. You just need to observe the concentration of this drink.

Once I had a very strong drop in blood pressure after taking it. Now I dilute kvass a little with boiled water. And further. Nutritionists pay attention to the fact that this kvass contains a large amount of oxalic acid. Therefore, it should not be drunk by people suffering from kidney disease, bladder disease, urolithiasis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. At least drink it for a long time.

I propose a recipe for beet kvass, maybe someone will try to cook it.

You need to grate 1 kg of beets or finely chop.

You will also need 3 tbsp. tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, a

crust of rye bread.

All these components must be poured into a jar or saucepan with 2.5 liters of boiled water, covered with gauze. Insist warm for five days. Then drain and store the kvass in the refrigerator. I drink it a glass a day for a month.

Do not be lazy to sow leek

It is good that our experienced gardeners have learned how to grow leeks, although not every plot can be found. The yield of this onion per square meter is two to three times higher than that of onion. The thickest "leg" (the white part of the false stem) is in the Elephant variety. I didn't have his seeds, I bought the Gulliver variety just in case. The bag says: growing season 110-150 days, plant height 40-50 cm, bleached stem diameter 2-3 cm, leg height 15-20 cm.

She sowed seeds on March 24, planted the seedlings without picking on the garden bed, almost completely covered it with humus. The height of the plant (false stem) turned out to be 80-100 cm, the leaves were of incredible length, some kind of dense forest grew with my growth. The white part of the stem turned out to be 20-25 cm long, the diameter was really 2-3 cm, and in some plants even 4 cm. There used to be the Tango variety, and so Gulliver reminds him. True, in a cold rainy summer, the Tango variety was not so high. I use leek in pies open with egg and sour cream, in pumpkin pilaf, in lean pickle, and I also freeze so much that is enough until the new harvest.

Here are the recipes for my leek pies for young housewives:

Open leek pie. Any dough can be used, I make yeast. Lightly blanch the finely chopped leek with hot butter (pour hot butter into the onion and mix it thoroughly). I spread it on the dough, fill it with the prepared mixture (I mix raw eggs with sour cream or mayonnaise) and bake.

Closed leek pie. Finely chop the leeks, lightly simmer in a frying pan in butter. I add boiled eggs and some rice. Cover with dough on top and bake.

Radish harvest
Radish harvest

Black radish is tasty and healthy

I definitely grow radish because I just love it. The body simply requires it in late October, November and December. It could be used later, but in apartment conditions the radish becomes not very juicy.

Alas, for many reasons, gardeners have stopped growing black radish. The fact is that at the stage of cotyledons it is often completely eaten by an earthen flea. If she does not eat at this time, she will get it at the stage of 1-2 small true leaves. If you manage to save the seedlings, then the radish begins to shoot. If small arrows in their embryonic form can be watched and removed, then after a while they will appear again. It seems that you have already defended your plants, the roots began to grow, but then slugs and snails arrived. So gardeners have stopped growing black radish - a very laborious culture.

But I still grow it. But the radish requires a lot of attention. Every morning and evening I spray the seedlings, sprinkle with ashes during the day or just dry soil (dust). You have to keep an eye on it until harvesting, but what a nice radish it turns out! Juicy, dense, large, heavy.

As for shooting, it began to drive the arrow only in recent years, 4-5 years ago this was not the case. There are many reasons for this, including weather ones. In my opinion, they don't fit. For example, last season the radish shot out, but in 2012, in a rainy, not cold, but not hot summer, it also gave arrows. I think something is wrong with the seeds.

In 2013, I bought three packets of seeds in different stores. Radish varieties Negress given direction, radish varieties of winter round black, too zastrelkovalas, radish varieties Negress, but in a different package - also gave arrows. All seeds in three stores were from SeDeK. It turns out that all the seeds are from one manufacturer, only packaged in different packages. Radish seeds keep their germination for a long time, which means that this year they will be sold, only in other bags.

And the potatoes are delicious

If you believe the laws of biodynamics, then potatoes in the year of the moon turn out to be tasteless. All the varieties that I planted last spring have shown themselves well. When boiled, the potatoes turned out to be white, crumbly, tasty. I think that it turned out to be tasty because it is not the first year that I have been bringing the preparation " Giant " by the firm "Fart" under the potatoes.

I advise you to carefully consider this fertilizer. The nutritional formula for potatoes is correct. When we bought our plot, there was a swamp there, covered with sand and stones on top. In the fall, I buried manure there, and in the spring, when planting potatoes, I used "Giant" - brought it into the holes. And they reaped the harvest. That was 25 years ago. Now I do this: if we buy manure, then this year I do not apply fertilizer, and in the following years I will use it again.

Each new season brings some surprises, so the past one also examined us. And the main thing here is to draw the right conclusions.
